I actually found an article that breaks the rule:

ME5SENGER_24 ,

The obvious answer is yes, the US will continue to send more and more weapons and bombs to Israel forever. I wish it would end. But it won’t.

So the response to this will be MORE KILLING MACHINES

Viking_Hippie ,

Continuing like before is by definition a LACK of response, though.

Might as well say that you’re responding to the decline of Polish snail husbandry by still not knowing much about Polish snail husbandry.

Will the U.S. Ever Respond?

I don’t know, why don’t we try asking Rachel Corrie.

Oh wait, she’s been dead for over twenty years and the US still hasn’t made a stink about her being killed by Israeli occupiers who were literally in the process of stealing Palestinian land.

Further, as others have pointed out, Aysenur Ezgi Eygi isn’t even as lucky as Rachel Corrie to have a white sounding name that US citizens might give a shit about. Meaning it’s even more likely that Eygi’s story will get brushed under the rug and forgotten.

Diplomjodler3 , in US confirms first case of bird flu with no known animal exposure

Well shit. Here we go again.

ExtravagantEnzyme ,

We’ve known since at least March that about 10 human cases of this new bird flu would allow the virus to mutate and adapt to humans. This is the 14th reported case in the states this year, and the first which could have been transmitted from human to human. We understood what was happening, yet have really done nothing to try to prevent it’s spread.

The mutation rate baked into Influenza’s reproduction cycle is much more elaborate than coronaviruses, and this isn’t exactly a bad thing. When a human catches bird flu from a bird, the mortality rates are pretty burly as this version of the virus attaches to the α2:3 receptor. While this receptor is found throughout the avian digestive and respiratory track, it’s only found in the lower lungs of humans. A lower lung infection will always be gnarlier than an upper respiratory infection. Human influenza viruses have a preference for the α2:6 receptor, which is found throughout our airway. This is the primary adaptation which occurs when influenza mutates to infect humans. But a virus is a parasite, so in their ideal world, they wouldn’t kill their host. Viruses often do the most damage when adapting to or having recently adapted to a new host. Hopefully, the mutation rate of influenza will result in a shorter pandemic compared to COVID if it ends up taking place.

BaalInvoker , in US confirms first case of bird flu with no known animal exposure

We’re approaching a new pandemic… Are we prepared?

NegativeInf ,

Never have been, never will be.

Republicans said COVID was just a little flu, and nature said, hold my beer, I’ll remind you how bad a flu pandemic is.

As an example, COVID killed like .0875% of the global population. Spanish flu killed between 2.25 and 5.5% of the global population at the time, depending on which estimates are more correct.

Here is the question that I’ll pose for debate:

Is a US citizen protected by the US armed forces if they chose to enter an active warzone as a non-combatant without the consent of the US government?

Please explain your answer.

mlg ,
@mlg@lemmy.world avatar

West Bank isn’t an active war zone

The USA allows you to visit anywhere you want, and they maintain a travel advisory list for every country. Both Israel and the West Bank are listed as “High Security Risk”, not “Do Not Travel”. You can still visit “Do Not Travel” places at mostly your own risk.

The reason given for the advisory is “terrorism and civil unrest”. Nowhere in their explanation does it say you will be actively shot at by the acting “defense” force or police.

Hell considering the circumstances, it’s probably better to avoid run ins with the IDF, which is the opposite of what the advisory says to do lol.

PugJesus ,

Is a US citizen protected by the US armed forces if they chose to enter an active warzone as a non-combatant without the consent of the US government?

Doesn’t fucking matter. The US doesn’t look at national government forces killing American civilians neutrally in any circumstance - except, it seems, in the case of Israel. This isn’t some paramilitary or rebel group that killed an American civilian. This is literally the security forces of an ‘ally’.

Fondots , in As Harris Rejects Fracking Ban, Will Anyone Listen to What Pennsylvanians Want?

Politicians lie and use all kinds of weasely doublespeak bullshit all the damn time, it’s pretty much their signature move, everyone knows it, it’s been the punchline of countless jokes, no one likes it, but anyone with half a brain understands that it’s part of how the game is played and how you get the morons that make up a lot of this country excited to show up and vote for you.

So why are Kamala and so many other democrats so bad at just doing that when it counts?

How many undecided idiots does she think have fracking as their big tentpole issue, who are saying “gee, you know, I kind of agree with everything else she’s saying, but I don’t know if she agrees with me that fracking is the greatest thing since sliced bread, so I guess I’ll stay home on election day or maybe vote for the guy who’s skin looks like it was stained orange by fracking chemicals”

Compared to how many people in her base who are strongly against fracking, and feel that by supporting it she is just plain not listening to them and who may choose to stay home on election day because they feel so alienated and hopeless about the state of politics in our country.

How hard is it to just say nothing about these kinds of issues? Or if it’s something you absolutely have to comment on, why not just dance around it and say some vague bullshit about making fracking safe?

Play the fucking game, and play it to win.

I know she’s in the pockets of megacorporations that support fracking, her record speaks for itself for anyone with half a brain who cares to look into it, most people aren’t going to look into it though.

I don’t support fracking, but I also know if Trump wins then it’s game over, and oil and gas companies might just start a fracking operation from my bedroom and dump their waste in my dog’s water bowl just because they can, and since we’ll be living in a fascist dictatorship hell scape, there’d be no clear path forward to do anything about it.

If Harris wins, fracking stays more or less as it is now, and there’s a path forward, even if it’s a narrow one, to get a better candidate next time around.

But like I said, a lot of people are idiots who refuse to see that bigger picture, they’ll see Harris doing shit like this and just lose interest and not show up on election day or throw their vote away to some third party because they think they’re making a stand.
