The FTC has been CRUSHING IT under the current leaders by actually enforcing existing rules. I hope Kamala tells those donors to pound sand.

lettruthout ,

Yeah, this is why we need campaign finance reform. Isn’t there another country that limits the duration of their campaigns? That would be a good place to start.

givesomefucks ,

Most countries can kick out a PM, hold a national popular vote election. And have a replacement PM in office in like 2-3 months.

For a fraction of the cost of what we do.

But having the primary start so early and called after 5-10 states vote gives this huge election where fundraising happens nonstop. Which is insane because most people don’t see TV/radio commercials anymore. We learn about candidates from what the media says about candidates more than anything, have for decades.

Even in person campaign stops, who goes to one of those if they aren’t already voting for them?

It’s costing each party over a billion for presidential campaigns these days, and for the life of me I can’t understand how they could spend that much if they tried.

It’s literally Brewster’s Millions, but if someone’s team is raising the most, they act like it’s a good thing.

Everything about American elections is inflated because there’s so much money that can be made in what’s essentially legalized bribery. And 99.9% of Americans are priced out of the system. With the “victory fund” nonsense, an individual can give like 960k this year. Why would they waste time with average Americans who might give $20?

reddig33 ,

I’d say she’s been trying, but I don’t know that anything has been achieved yet. Still an improvement over what we had before.

Harris: Predictable, business friendly, heavily embedded in DC/LA machine politics, generally willing to horse trade with anyone at the right price

Trump: Loose cannon, dead beat, burned in both party establishments, constantly looking to screw you over for the slightest of personal advantages

Damn, can’t believe Harris is the preferable option.

Never forget he unloaded buckshot into another man’s face and that man and their family apologized to him for the mental trauma they caused him.

Possibly the funniest moment of the Cheney presidency. Shame he couldn’t have done that to more people in his inner circle. Filling Paul Wolfowitz’s face with bird shot would have made all subsequent CNN interviews better.

Please, Harris, fucking endorse popular positions… you’ll coast into the white house.

Ppl were celebrating Kamala raising $300 million in another post yesterday. We should NEVER applaud money in politics. IT IS A BRIBE. Keeping money out of American politics should be up there with universal health care. Regardless of the fact Republicans have more mega donors Democrats are still indebted to their mega donors. Applauding for having less mega donors is like applauding a criminal for only having one victim.

Despite Snapchat setting the fake minor’s profile to private and the account not adding any followers, “Heather” was soon recommended widely to “dangerous accounts, including ones named ‘child.rape’ and ‘pedo_lover10,’ in addition to others that are even more explicit,” the New Mexico DOJ said in a press release.

givesomefucks , in Hollywood Stars Call on U.S. to End Arms Sales to Israel in Campaign

“Our demand is simple — our elected leaders must enforce existing U.S. and international humanitarian laws that prohibit the use of military assistance to commit ‘grave human rights violations,’” said Ruffalo, who has long been an advocate for Palestinian rights and has spoken out against Israeli military aggression. Ruffalo noted that the U.K. had recently announced that it was halting 30 arms exports licenses to Israel, something he said was “not enough, but it’s a start, and more than the U.S., the biggest supplier of arms and weapons to Netanyahu and the state of Israel, has done.”

Too many people want to just ignore that every shipment of weapons breaks both US and international law…

Both parties support ignoring the law, and unfortunately lots of Americans only care if “the other team” breaks the law. With both sides being corrupt on this issue, most people will just stick their heads in the sand and ignore all the broken laws.

ravhall , in Cops lure pedophiles with AI pics of teen girl. Ethical triumph or new disaster?

Tough call. If you put out bait, you’re gonna get someone. But would that person have done the same thing if they had not seen your bait? Chicken and the egg. On one hand, it looks like entrapment.

TheTetrapod ,

I mean, that part isn’t really at issue here. It’s fundamentally the same technique that’s been used since the 90’s, famously on To Catch a Predator. Seemingly, the “entrapment” angle has been settled.

ravhall ,

But now they can argue that they aren’t sexually attracted to children, just AI artwork, which is technically not an image of a child. And unless I missed it, they were not trying to meet the girl.

The problem is going to be that images that aren’t real of a crime aren’t a crime. Of the opposite was true, images of murder would be illegal. Can’t just cherry pick.

If I draw a stick figure and label it “naked girl,” does it become child porn? What if I’m a really good artist?

Erasmus ,
@Erasmus@lemmy.world avatar

I believe that cartoon images depicting sex of underage kids is still illegal. At least in the US.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong but seems like I remember this from a news article a while back. Maybe it was just a specific state.

I am not going to Google that one though to find out though.

ravhall ,

Yeah don’t Google it hahaha

It what makes it a child? There’s some creepy anime girls who definitely fall into that questionable category. And if I label a stick figure with an age… does that make it illegal? What about an ai image with bubble text that says “I’m not real. I’m 18, I have a magical curse on me etc etc” now it’s fiction?

Since it isn’t actually real… what is the line, and how can that line be measured? Since this is just going to keep being a problem, this awkward conversation needs to happen in a logical, calm manner.

would_be_appreciated ,

IANAL, but my understanding is entrapment is when they convince you to do something you might not otherwise have done. So if the cops create an account of a minor and message an adult asking if they want to fuck, and the answer is like “uh no, absolutely not,” and then the cops follow up by repeatedly sexting, and the adult blocks their account, but the cops relentlessly keep sexting from burner accounts, and plant people in the adult’s work and social environments who keep talking about how normal it is to fuck minors who sext you out of the blue, and then the adult is finally like “oh whatever, fine” - that’s entrapment.

Now, most people still are literally never going to take the minor up on the offer, no matter how relentless they are or how normalized it is in their environment. That’s true about most crimes. The question is how many people wouldn’t have committed that crime unless this very specific police-created situation came up, and that difference is what falls into entrapment.

I’d argue this isn’t even close to entrapment, because all they did was set up an account much like all the others that exist, and waited for others to find them. It’s no different from leaving a bike unlocked, then catching somebody who steals it. There are unlocked bikes everywhere, and people don’t suddenly decide to steal the only bike of their life because they happened to find that unlocked bike.

Of course, they could also be spending this time and money getting to the root of societal issues and fixing the core problems instead of catching a small percentage of active pedophiles and letting the rest of them continue to cause irreparable harm.

shoulderoforion OP , in Missouri reports human H5-type bird flu case with no link to animals
@shoulderoforion@fedia.io avatar

well, I hate to break it to the brain trust in Missouri, but Human H5-type Bird fucking Flu doesn't simply spontaneously develop, there had to have been some sort of animal, either human or non human who passed this virus to the human. bullshit statements like this make me trust the authorities less, and fear the disease more, than if they spent the fucking time tracking it down to it's source, you know, like scientists have been known to do for the last 100 years before MAGAts made scientific knowledge, and protections a political third rail. and the beat goes on .......

ChocoboRocket ,

“The report marks the 15th human case of an H5-type bird flu infection in the country since 2022. But, the case stands out—and is quickly generating alarm online—because the man reported no contact with animals. All 14 of the previous cases occurred in farmworkers who had contact with either dairy cows or poultry that were known to be infected with H5N1.

I don’t think they’re necessarily saying it was spontaneous bird flu, it’s much easier to determine the animal(s) that gave a farm worker avian flu than testing every animal/person who interacted with someone.

Gigasser ,

Probably means it’s spreading in the community over there from human to human contact. Not good to say the least. I’d say stock up on toilet paper lol.
