v1605 , in Federal court: TikTok may be liable for a 10-year-old's death

I think the laws need to clarify the difference between just hosting vs suggesting content. Tik Tok should be responsible since it suggested the dangerous video, unlike if it was just hosted on an AWS server.

frezik , in Donald Trump lays blame for assassination attempt on Biden and Harris

If Biden/Harris were responsible, I would hope they wouldn’t pick a kid who got kicked off the high school shooting team for being a comically and dangerously bad shot.

vegeta , in X caught blocking links to NPR, claiming the news site may be 'unsafe'

It is unsafe. Unsafe for Elmo’s conspiracy/misinformation posts

calabast , in Biden EPA Rejects Plastics Industry’s Fuzzy Math That Misleads Customers About Recycled Content

Why is the word “Biden” in the title?

NocturnalMorning ,

I guess because it’s technically under Bidens pervue as the executive branch. But you’re right its not necessary to include.

calabast ,

Yeah, I understand. Look I’m as orange-man-bad as they come, but I’m tired of both sides trying to tie things to a president that they didn’t actually have anything to do with. (And with project 2025 I know that Trump may actually decimate the EPA, the Chevron ruling already did incalculable damage to all of the agencies. And yet I STILL don’t want to read about how “Biden’s EPA” did something he probably wasn’t even aware of.)

rockhstrongo , in Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau dead in New Jersey bike accident
@rockhstrongo@lemmy.world avatar

I was browsing news headlines. Me: “Why is Johnny Gaudreau trending…”

Reading out loud to my wife, I first read it as “Johnny Gaudreau’s brother died”. Reading it a second time, the utter dread sunk in.

What a way to find out.

Finding out that it was the day before their sister’s wedding…a tremendous tragedy.

He’ll be missed.

Buffalox , in X caught blocking links to NPR, claiming the news site may be 'unsafe'

This is an obvious abuse of power, and is clearly illegal, or at least it is in EU, but since this is about USA, it’s probably alright, because USA is no longer a country of law. If it was, Trump would not still be walking around a free man, running for president.

I hope EU will never decline to the depths Trump and republicans have dragged USA.

FlowVoid ,

Twitter operates in the EU, so if this were illegal in the EU then the EU would file a complaint. Maybe it’s not illegal in the EU.

tyler ,

“The EU would file a complaint”. That’s not how that works at all…

Omegamanthethird , (edited )
@Omegamanthethird@lemmy.world avatar

“If this were illegal” is already a bad assumption. In the U.S., SCOTUS already determined that the 14th Amendment is unenforceable.

And any other time, there requires somebody to file charges.

jmcs ,

First as other people said, it doesn’t work like that. Second there’s already a process in the EU Comission against X because of them knowingly spreading misinformation.

suction ,

They don’t act that fast.

disguy_ovahea ,

It’s about accreditation in the US. It’s the same reason Fox News and Newsmax are classified as “entertainment.” Social media companies are not required to provide accurate information. They’re only held accountable by civil suits for slander or libel.

Buffalox ,

Well the way things are going, X may need to shut down in EU soon.
Even Brazil doesn’t tolerate their bullshit anymore.

some_guy , in Justice Department watchdog finds flaws in FBI’s reporting of sex crimes against children

In a review of more than 300 cases between 2021 and 2023, the inspector general flagged 42 cases for the FBI that required “immediate attention” because there was no evidence of recent investigative steps taken or because of other concerns, according to the report.

That’s a pretty good run rate. /s

frickitickitavi , in X caught blocking links to NPR, claiming the news site may be 'unsafe'

What do you mean “caught”? Do you “catch” someone punching you in the face?

krashmo ,

Yes you do. That’s what the phrase “catch these hands” is referring to 😁

I_Has_A_Hat , in J.D. Vance Booed by Entire Crowd During Dumpster Fire Speech

I think it’s important to note that if you only read headlines here, you might think there was overwhelming disapproval from the firefighters union. If you get your news from right wing rags, you don’t hear the boos, you only hear the cheers. I’d say it was pretty mixed listening to the video, in fact more cheers than jeers. Of course that’s all meaningless as we have been digitally editing crowd reactions for years now and news agencies cherry pick what they want you to hear.

The point is, go out and vote. Don’t you dare think this race is in the bag, it is a hell of a lot closer than articles like this would make you believe and the actual hatred for the right is WAY less than you might imagine.

Reverendender , in Officials probe death of Wells Fargo employee found in her cubicle 4 days after last scanning into work

This is bonkers on many levels, yet I find it apropos that the company is Wells Fargo.

VirtualOdour , in Some European Cities Are Rebelling Against Overtourism

They want to be more affluent than surrounding towns and monopolise beauty spots, entertainments, and culture but they don’t want to share - I mean yeah of course rbey want that but surely they understand no one else will support them in it?

Move to somewhere not as touristy, oh you don’t want to because you like the stuff that is a draw to other people too? Crying shame.

Llewellyn ,

It’s their home. Why should they move?

VirtualOdour ,

Because they don’t like other people being around, it’s a simple choice if you want to live somewhere quiet then you move somewhere quiet you don’t have the option of telling everyone else that they can’t enjoy a beauty spot or city.

Especially when plenty of other people there choose to be there because it’s popular.

aeronmelon , in Officials probe death of Wells Fargo employee found in her cubicle 4 days after last scanning into work

That one episode of Mad Men immediately comes to mind.

THB ,

Been years since I watched it, when did something like this happen in the show?

Notyou , (edited )

It wasn’t 4 days, but they are either referring to when Lane hung hanged himself and didn’t get found till Monday, or Don’s old secretary that died in her chair. She got found the same day, but I think someone talked to her thinking she was alive.

Those are my guesses.

THB ,

Thanks!

prole ,

Hanged*

Sorry, not usually that guy, but this one in particular always bothers me.

Notyou ,

Thanks, I fixed it.
