I just switched to duckduckgo. Better results, not inundated with ads. Search for software on Google and the first 3-5 results, at least, are sponsored scam links.
That's not generally my experience. I still try DDG first, but probably 20-25% of the time, I have to switch back to Google. Oddly, not for the stuff in Japanese or related to Japan, but more tech and other such.
This is surprising IMO, the trend the past almost 3 decades (since the Clinton administration) has been to give the giants a free pass on almost everything. Bush ended the case against Microsoft, and since then there has been zero big case victories for competition and consumers that I can remember.
Maybe pressure from Europe helped, we’ve seen a lot of high profile rulings from EU, so maybe it’s “get your shit together, or we will do it for you” kind of situation?

It’s probably guns. That guy who shot all those people at the music festival in Vegas snuck a small arsenal into his room and they didn’t notice until the shooting.
If that were the case, why not do this for every conference? Same question for sex trafficking. Are hackers more violent or sexually exploitative than every other subculture?
They appear to be starting this before the event, so something has them spooked (could just be the con full of spooks). Also with the volume of technical know-how that is going to be in attendance I think
There is no way someone wont spot funny bususiness if a group or indivudal is trying to pull something.
If a visual inspection is all their doing (unlikely) then this amounts to nothing more that security theatre. If they are being more invasive the attendees will know (its DEF CON for fuck sake).
This may just prompt the attendees to book at another resort next year and hurt the hotel in the long run, seeing as this is very close to the opening of the con I dont see many groups changing their booking in time.
If I learned this after I had booked, I would be expecting a refund as well as compensation for missing the conference if I couldn't find alternative accommodation.
A question that might be dumb but I will ask it: why do prosecutors announce that a charge is coming? Do they have to do this or is this some courtesy thing?
They definitely don’t have to do this. Indictments and arrest warrants are typically sealed until they are executed.
When this happens to high profile public figures who are not likely flight risks, it’s relatively common to let the target know about the pending case before they’re in custody. It’s also common to negotiate an arranged surrender with the target’s lawyers.
The arranged surrenders benefit the cops because they don’t have to waste time looking for the perp, and it benefits the accused because they get a little time to get their affairs in order.
In this case, I think there’s some component of the prosecutor trying to publicize themselves.
No way, there’s not a chance this is true. The man occupies one of the most prestigious seats of power in the nation. You really think we’d elect some sort of corrupt traitor to the position? The allegations are so petty- even if he were corrupt, do you really think he’d sell himself so fucking cheap? Come on. Next you’ll be telling me he’s some sort of a sex pest, too.
