Oh, I still buy burgers. I’ll just go to a burger establishment to get them instead. Fast food used to be fast (aka convenient) and cheap. Now it’s just fast.
Note that I was not a frequent fast food eater before this, but I have pivoted to going to restaurants when I forget my lunch.
I live in Seattle so I’m obviously not going to visit them when their are a dozen good small cafés within a stone throw of any Starbucks. On the few occasions that I have been there recently, the specialty drinks (I drink the occasional latte) are terrible. That should not be surprising since they are made by minimum wage teenagers. The food is crap. All of it is overpriced.

You know what, for context for anyone late to the discourse.
All of this is about a bill passing through the Senate for the manufacturer of the government bought flags to go from 50% American manufactured materials to 100%.

The other day I was walking around, thinking about all the different coffee shops I could see, and wondering why people waste their money on starbucks and their burnt-ass coffee.

in the same way a phlebotomist should still try to get blood from an actual stone?
because - and with all due respect to journalists of all backgrounds - i’m neither black nor a journalist, but i would think that if i were either (or both) i’d know a huge waste of my time when i saw one.
This doesn’t work. I hope they’re not naive enough to think that’ll work. It doesn’t even matter what happens there. All Trump and his team want is the victory of him appearing there. They want the photo opportunity, they want the headline, they want to be able to say look the blacks love us. And they know nobody in their base is going to question it. They also know the vast majority of Americans won’t check into the actual events
I’ve seen a few of these articles and everyone is missing the bigger picture. Yes making better products will increase sales. However the main point that people don’t understand is that companies are recognizing that their prices are too high to drive sales and as such prices drop to reflect that. Meaning that inflation is shrinking. This is a huge win for Americans and I hope voters see that and vote accordingly.
“U.S. Catholic bishops in June apologized for the church’s role in trauma the children experienced. And in 2022, Pope Francis apologized for the Catholic Church’s cooperation with boarding schools in Canada.”
Considering this only covers US Government purchased flags, this IS the invisible hand of the market. It’s a consumer choosing where they want to purchase products.
And it is t nationalizing the industry. They still will be privately produced. And individual Americans can still by Chinese flags.
The particular industry that’s being nationalised is American flags produced for US government consumption. (The nationalisation part)
They’ve decided to legislate because they don’t like the optics of some foreign made products. (This isn’t an invisible hand; it’s opaque)
How is that justified in a supposedly capitalist society when China can produce flags of the same quality but at a cheaper price?
Edit: maybe protectionism is a better word than nationalise, end effect is the same; The government of a capitalist country is directly interfering with the market.
Harris was referring to the visit she made to the Central California Women’s Facility in July, a visit on which I tagged along. It was a surreal experience to watch dozens of women, mostly women of color, at work stations inside of the country’s largest prison for women, laying out and printing fabric and then dyeing it royal blue. It was just as surreal, if not more so, to hear prison officials point out that these flags would one day fly atop every state and federal building in California, describing this with something almost adjacent to pride.
