Touted as a greener alternative but according to study cited in article
Scientific studies have found firing wood pellets puts more carbon immediately into the atmosphere than coal. Pollution from biomass-based facilities is nearly three times higher than that of other energy sectors, according to a 2023 paper in the journal Renewable Energy.
That would mean that wood pellets are still much better than coal. The study cited in the article are saying essentially “wood pellets bad because solar and wind are better energy sources”. I agree with that statement, but the study also essentially says “coal is worse that wood pellets”.
Wood pellets aren’t generally made from trees turned right into pellets. The inputs are usually waste wood products from paper pulp making, agricultural waste, and wood scrap from other industries. There is certainly some extra energy input from hauling this material and pelletizing it, but stopping use of wood pellets isn’t going to save trees or reduce carbon emissions. Those dead wood inputs are going back into CO2 during degradation in the next few years or decades if they are pellets or not.
It’s literally the reason landmines in their current form exist. They are specifically designed not to kill directly, because a guy screaming in agony with his legs blown off is worse for morale than just a bit of pink mist. As a bonus, that guy then needs to be cared for, transported away, etc. etc.
It’s sickening to see this time and again, particularly when the person who was murdered was the very one who called the police. Honestly, I think African-Americans would be safer with the kind of self-policing model we saw from groups like the Black Panthers.
And since it’s republicans, we haven’t even acknowledged that these are all underaged couches, still well within their warranties with a lot of life and promise ahead of them… That is until old "Just Do (it with couches) Vance shows up…
They’ll use legal mechanisms like civil asset forfeiture and “crime free housing” to continue going after people they don’t like. They can kick you out of your home and then take your kids away for it and then send them to a religious orphanage or foster family where they will be forced to work.
It’s pretty easy to pump up the official GDP Growth number by understating Inflation since the former is mathematically reduced by the latter.
You might have noticed frequent news (and people complaining) about the prices of things having gone up A LOT in the US and yet official Inflation figures are quite subdued.
Then on top of that, it’s an Election Year and the political pressure to massage then numbers to make them look good is likely higher than normal (plus they can always be corrected later, after the election).
The US might not practice China-level Economic-figures Massaging, but they’ve definitely been a lot more Fantastic and Fabulous (in that they have a lot more Fantasy and Fable to them) since the mad scramble to look good (or at least not as bad) after the 2008 Crash.
Just saw a post showing a Walmart order from 2020 was like $80 and now is over $400. It’s easy to make the economy look good when the price for everything has gone up
