I mean, I can’t speak as to Mike Johnson’s personal sense of ethics, but if he’s making a legal claim, what law does it break?
This is a party-internal process.
The Democratic Party didn’t participate in the primary election, based on the expectation that Biden would run. But as I’ve pointed out here before, there’s no legal obligation for an American political party to hold a primary election or even if they do, for that primary result to bind them. We historically – and for most of American history – didn’t hold primaries at all. Parties decided that they wanted to do them and participate, but they don’t have to do so. The Libertarian Party does participate in primaries, but under their party rules, the results are merely advisory – the party can theoretically choose someone else. The Green Party policy varies based on state: in some, they participate in primaries, and in others, they caucus, have the state party internally select the party’s candidate.
For about half of the ~150 years that the Republican Party has been around, no states anywhere held primary elections. If it’s unlawful not to go to the primaries, was the Republican Party breaking the law all that time?
Both states’ Democratic parties held a primary,.with every relevant race other than president on the ballot. The original claim was that the “Democratic Party didn’t participate in the primary election.” Which is not accurate as every state’s Democratic party did hold a primary election. It wasn’t qualified to the presidential race, and even if it was a blanket statement would still be incorrect given that there were states who did have a choice for presidential nominee on their primary ballot.
If it's unlawful not to go to the primaries, was the Republican Party breaking the law all that time?
The law of "Hey Mr. Supreme Court can you just say we won the election? I mean if not it's all cool, we can wait and try to do it the other way I guess, but it'd be really cool if you just could say out loud, you know what, fuck democracy we pick the winners now. Wouldn't that be pretty hot? If you just did that, just said it out loud?"
That’s why I’m never gonna cancel my USA subscription. Your shows always have a crazy twist right before the season finale.
Jokes aside: Not a single person who even considers voting for Trump is worth any hassle. Their vote is a coin flip on fucking acid. The dems should try to animate the lazy nonvoting pricks.
It’s pretty telling how you can meme about the most dangerous nation on the planet slipping into fascism. Of course you don’t care now because it isn’t happening in your city. I guaran-fucking-tee if drumpf gets re-elected, it will be IN your city by next year. So laugh it up.
I don’t think anyone means to disparage the very real concerns facing USians, and I think non-USians recognize this affects every one of us regardless of country (I recently made a comment regarding this exactly).
I think that commenter was just using humour because it’s quite overwhelming that within a week-- Trump’s been shot at and Biden is stepping aside.
If us outsiders are feeling this, then I imagine it is so much worse for USians. I am empathetic to how stressful this must be, and hope for a candidate who annhilates Trump and leads your country towards healing.
The president of the United States affects the rest of the world but we don’t have a say in who it is, so I don’t know what you expect from us foreigners? Perhaps my country which is a staunch US ally and a fraction of the size should launch a coup?
Sort your shit out, America, because nobody is in a position to do it for you. We’re making jokes because it seems unreal that things have gotten this far and because there is no real way for us to influence US domestic politics.
This decision really raises my opinion of Biden so much. God damn do I love that man, he is truly a great person who dedicated his life to serve his country, literally. He honestly had a great term given the circumstances, and the only thing he probably should have done differently is to not run for reelection to begin with. But he seemed to genuinely believe he could win and stave off Trump. Now that that seemed impossible, he makes a very courageous decision that a lot of people probably wouldn’t have made and puts the country ahead of his ego. Lots of respect from me, and I hope this reinvigorates the democratic base and makes the future brighter for all of us.
As a European progressive I obviously don’t worship Biden, but I have really come to respect him and he has been nothing but a class act throughout his whole term. He is stepping down and handing over the reins, now is as good a time as ever to recognize him as a - quite surprisingly honestly - good president.
That’s fine, the choking helps me show just how much I appreciate him doing this.
What, did you think I was going to take this an insult? “Oh no he’s saying I’m sucking another man’s penis!”
Nah. Biden just showed he’s putting the country over his ego. That’s not something Trump would’ve ever done, and very few politicians at all would do this. I’m going to keep guzzling for as long as I damn please, thank you very much.
Dumb. All because of a bad night that the media turned into a storm. Real world performance metrics were actually quite good for Joe. The Republican candidate says stuff on par with a semi-comatose baboon every time a microphone is in front of him. Supporters of this are oblivious to how much seething sexism and racism lies just under the surface in the US. This was a big part of how we got into this mess in the first place and why estimates for Hillary’s success were so far off. It will be an incredible win if she pulls this off, but it’s just not going to happen.
So let me get this straight… the people who just last week were pissed off about people making fun of Trump getting grazed in the ear by a bullet are now celebrating someone’s death.
From my European point of view, i just hope she picks Kelly as her VP. A progressive Astronaut, Ambassador for UNITED24 and someone that knows that we should save us from the ultimate climate collapse…maybe we can get Alexander Gerst here in Germany to do some politics :D
Not a bad pick, could help keep Arizona blue. Having someone that’s been in combat on the ticket could nail help nail Trump on his “suckers” and “losers” stuff about the military. Could swing some independents.
