OccamsTeapot , in 'Ticking Time Bomb': International Alarm as Poliovirus Found in Gaza Sewage.

Gaza has been polio-free for 25 years and 95% of the population was vaccinated against the disease as of 2022, according to the WHO, though Haj-Hassan, the pediatrician, said that many Gazans, including newborns, have gone without vaccines or boosters for the last nine months.

The WHO said that it’s working with other U.N. agencies and health authorities in Gaza to assess how much the poliovirus has spread and determine what measures may be needed, including a “prompt” vaccination campaign.

Combatting any infectious diseases will present challenges for Gaza’s public healthcare system, which has been embattled and largely destroyed by Israeli forces. Only 16 out of the enclave’s 36 hospitals are even partially functional, and only 45 of the 105 primary health care facilities are operational, according to the WHO.

Some people would look you straight in the face and tell you that even though Israel did all this to the health care system, the enemy is Hamas and not the entire population of Gaza. As if they didn’t know what destroying hospitals leads to.

Treczoks ,

What makes me wonder: if Gaza is polio-free for 25 years, where does the virus come from?

Bluefalcon ,

Most viruses come from our soil. This could be wild or just contamination due to the conditions.

catloaf ,

It’s possible for people to carry the virus without actually getting sick. See Typhoid Mary, for example.

Varyk , in 8 More Democrats in Congress Urge Biden to Step Aside.

No replacement, no plan, just

“How can we beat twermp?

I know! Remove his opponent who beat him last time.”

Foolish.

I agree with AOC and Sanders, Biden is the right candidate.

I hope Biden doesn’t bow to these cowards, and if he does, I hope I’m wrong that this is nothing more than a successful conservative scheme handing twermp the oval office.

Conservatives tried the exact same bullshit four years ago before Biden kicked their asses(despite their “polls”) and achieved one of the most successfully progressive presidencies in US history.

FlexibleToast ,

You don’t need to have a replacement ready. You can run this thing called a primary where people vote on who the replacement should be. We can even gather up the democrats and let them discuss the future of the party and officially nominate a new candidate. We can call that a democratic convention. We have plenty of time.

Cosmonauticus ,

That would’ve been a good idea a year or 2 ago

FlexibleToast ,

We live in the information age. We still have plenty of time. But you’re right, it would have been better if we had a real primary to begin with.

Sanctus ,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Except you can’t just do that now. We dont have plenty of time. Good luck organizing primaries in all the states again before November. And good luck pressuring the law to allow you to do that.

FlexibleToast ,

You’re tight about the primaries. But, the democrats can still pick a different candidate at the committee. We have plenty of time for that. We can even do debates and polling before then.

Sanctus ,
@Sanctus@lemmy.world avatar

Its different because someone has already been nominated. Its not as easy as just picking someone else at the convention because of various state laws about it. Thats the issue here, well and that there doesnt seem to be any clear alternative that’ll bolster one last hoorah.

Tygr , in The White House Has a Plan to Slash Plastic Use in the U.S.

Cool, so we’re going to eliminate all the plastic in packaging at supermarkets and retail, right? Right?

BombOmOm ,
@BombOmOm@lemmy.world avatar

Plastic at supermarkets is very effective at reducing food spoilage. Ditching the plastic will result in much more food hitting the bin, and higher food costs. Given all that binned food must be created and transported again, it’s a huge net negative for the environment.

andyburke ,

Depends on how bad you think microplastics are for us? 🤷‍♂️

bobs_monkey ,

Everything is a tradeoff. Until we develop a coat effective solution for maintaining freshness (and the other varieties of plastics usage), it’s more or less the best option we have for now.

Sixner ,

Microplastics have been found in a fair number of foods already. Fish especially.

I’m on board with reducing plastics, but grocery stores are lower on the list than say… All the non food stores like hardware, hobby, and clothing stores.

It’s a tall order overall, any progress is a step on the right direction.

Sure. Next you’ll be saying the same about apples. Or some other silly claim like the thick outer layer on an apple can be eaten.

Zaktor , in DNC officials defend virtual roll call vote

I’m not sure I agree, but it’s reasonable to not trust this law. People who think any Republican threat will result in automatic loss are a bit much, but this one has some active questions that make it dangerous to rely on.

That all said, it’s great that they’re only just now deciding we should avoid giving Republicans power over ballot access. They should have thought about this when they planned the convention for after the original due date.
