It could be argued that the Congress is overstaffed, going by productivity metrics.

mozz ,
@mozz@mbin.grits.dev avatar

I have no idea what you’re talking about, but I think what happened was that mean dickheads with money started running everything.

I think John Oliver is still having fun. Maybe some sports panel shows, too. Offhand I can’t think of anyone else, although I don’t watch much TV.

Fetus ,

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Alteon ,

There’s thousands upon thousands of famous people. Why waste your time following or supporting someone that you feel is not a good person? Turns out a lot of people feel that same way, hence someone being “cancelled”. No one went on a “hardcore vindictive streak” to get these people cancelled.

ogmios ,
@ogmios@sh.itjust.works avatar

Oh please. People were swinging that stick around blindly. Sure there were some legitimately bad actors hurt, but the damage it did to society as a whole has been incalculable, as every random idiot with a grudge felt empowered to wield it as a weapon against everyone around them.

Cadeillac ,
@Cadeillac@lemmy.world avatar

Hello, cancel culture? Yeah, this guy right here

corsicanguppy , (edited )

This guy is a bad example. Can we have this debate when it’s someone worth the effort? This guy is a huge asshole and I’m willing to ‘no contest’ his cancelling.

Fight the next one. I beg you.

ogmios ,
@ogmios@sh.itjust.works avatar

I’m responding to the person saying they miss when people had fun on TV. That doesn’t happen anymore because too many vindictive assholes feel empowered to ruin people’s lives without a second thought in our current culture.

mozz ,
@mozz@mbin.grits.dev avatar

You literally made me laugh out loud. Well done.

No. No. It did not. The problem you are describing isn’t totally imaginary, but for the most part, it’s a good thing that you can’t be an avowed racist or misogynist or general all-around ass and everyone will still love you as long as you are good at your job.

Nobody is going to go on Twitter and said they were triggered because WKUK did this skit, and then George Soros would get the show cancelled. In fact, the lions’s share of the time, the people cancelling shows or freaking out and boycotting products, because someone said the wrong thing, are on your side of the ideological divide.

Alabaster_Mango ,
@Alabaster_Mango@lemmy.ca avatar

Ok, that’s hilarious 😂. A few edgy comedians had a rough patch and now Rome is burning!

I think society will survive any misapplications of cancelling. There is no need to worry.

Stand back and stand by

RedditWanderer ,

This is exactly the point. He can say he loves project 2025, then say he’s never heard of it and his base just take it as a secret message to fuck shit up because trump is “just pretending it doesn’t exist to play the politics”. He can randomly spew X person is callling the shots at any time to send the media on a rampage.

There needs to be accountability, there was a time where politicians pretended they weren’t lying/gaslighting/ragebaiting/sealioning/dogwhistling or whatever, Trump brought all these to normalcy.

theangryseal ,

A news station would have to run back to back videos of him saying something and then lying about it for a month or so. Everyone is desensitized to it. It isn’t shocking, it’s expected. They’d have to relegate all other news to the ticker to cover anything other than his lies.

And you know what? Half the country would still vote for him.

On top of that, he’s been over covered already and his base believes anything that is said about him must be an attack on him.

The number of people who are voting for him who have no idea he said that whole “suspend the constitution” bit would blow your mind. Look up videos of supporters being asked what they think of the line before being told Trump said it. They either don’t care or they refuse to believe it.

I just think our country is fucked because of… well, pretty much everything that’s happened over the course of my life.

SLVRDRGN ,

Ah but then you’re admitting that impeachment has shown itself to be of little effect for a (current) moment. It’s still incumbent on us as a society to hold those responsible for this accountable. And worse, it looks like somehow the impeached person is a likely prospect to become president again.

Nurse_Robot , in Federal appeals court rules cops who handcuffed 10-year-old girl for drawing offensive picture must face excessive force lawsuit

Why the fuck did the school call the cops? Everyone here sucks and failed society at every level. I’m sick of these stories.

Cosmonauticus ,

Why the fuck did the school call the cops?

You know why…

Tamara Taylor and her daughter, identified in pleadings as “N.B.”, sued the City of Honolulu and the Hawaii Department of Education for false arrest, use of excessive force, and racial and disability discrimination after police handcuffed and arrested a 10-year-old Black girl who drew an offensive picture.

Nurse_Robot ,

Yeah, I do. I suppose it was a rhetorical question. I’m just pissed off and tired of hearing the same thing for decades

unexposedhazard ,

But also what is “offensive”? Offensive to pedo christo fascists?

Edit:

drew a picture of a figure holding a gun. The picture also included phrases including, “Stand down B—-,” “Yo F—– days are over NOW,” and “Fake to me and DED!”

Thats not very nice, but also not offensive or illegal. I mean sure a teacher might wanna ask her what made her draw this, but damn bro, calling the cops??

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I drew people shooting each other and far worse all the time when I was 10. But then I’m a white male, so I suppose “boys will be boys” in my case, unlike her.

Modern_medicine_isnt ,

Right, we drew entire armies on the desks with all sorts of phrases coming from the soldiers. Context matters. But I get that a teacher may not want to make that call in this day and age. But they should have a counselor or something on staff to handle this.

ByteJunk ,
@ByteJunk@lemmy.world avatar

That’s a title for a blog post, not a news article.

Which is fascinating, because it actually reads like a proper news article. I didn’t fact check it, but I’m going with the assumption that the writer isn’t terrible and it’s the editor who came up with the title.

Or they just ripped it off an actual news source.
