Are we filing charges against sock puppets named Boeing? Who is the man in charge? Over three hundred people are dead. Those families deserve justice, not whatever this is.

Maggoty ,

In the US the corporation acts as a legal shield, except in criminal cases. The fact that the DOJ hasn’t ripped that shield away and stuck a probe up their ass tells you everything you need to know about how true my first sentence is. Despite hearing it ad nauseum every time something like the Ohio train crash happens.

treefrog ,

The quotes make me think this is a sarcastic comment about Trump supporters rather than an attack on the president. But if I’m wrong, here’s the quote.

“The pandemic is over,” he said. “We still have a problem with COVID.”

Emphasis mine.

QuentinCallaghan , (edited )
@QuentinCallaghan@sopuli.xyz avatar

My comment was meant as a reference related to that quote by Biden, who also now claims to have ended the pandemic. This is a rather bold claim, considering how the WHO has said that the pandemic isn’t over, and one country can’t end a pandemic when it’s global by definition. Also, when looking at cumulative COVID deaths by administration, there has been now more under Biden than Trump.

treefrog , (edited )

Okay, in which case the flu pandemic is also not over. (According to the WHO article). And comparing deaths in less than a year (400k) with deaths over three and a half (700k) is a fun way to manipulate statistics

And, I’m going to watch the Harrisburg speech. Because I can’t find a transcript and I suspect the twitter quote is as bullshit as your COVID one (which is bullshit because if you use quotation marks, you need to quote somebody, not put words in their mouth and take it out of context). I’ll report back in an hour.

Edit: He did say he ended the pandemic. That is some serious hubris I admit. Not like Trump doesn’t have hubris in spades but you do you.

AlligatorBlizzard , in Pickleballers were losing their court to tennis. So they staged a sit-in.

My parents are actually dealing with the opposite of this - they’re avid tennis players, and were rather annoyed when the tennis courts a few blocks from their house were converted to pickleball courts. And while it’s not too bad to temporarily set up a pickleball net on a tennis court, you can’t easily convert a pickleball court for tennis due to the dimensions.

Last I heard, their Medicare provider gave them pickleball stuff and they were going to try it.

Also, does anyone know where all this pickleball hype is coming from? I’m sure it’s a fun sport, but with how quickly it’s taken off it feels like someone is spending some serious cash to make pickleball a big thing, it doesn’t seem like organic hype.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

I’m sure it’s not totally organic, but don’t discount the basic popularity of an easy-to-play sport that doesn’t require a lot of athleticism to get to a level where you’re just playing the game and not practicing until you’re good enough. And, on top of that, it looks kind of like tennis, which is nowhere near as easy to play and requires a lot more athleticism, so it has that as a draw.

Also, does anyone know where all this pickleball hype is coming from? I’m sure it’s a fun sport, but with how quickly it’s taken off it feels like someone is spending some serious cash to make pickleball a big thing

It didn’t take off quickly. It started as a backyard game in the mid 60s among bored kids, and grew very slowly for decades. I was playing on a court in a friend’s back yard in the 80s. His dad was a big enough fan to lay tarmac for it. It just hit a tipping point in the last 15 years or so when it became popular enough that people could start making money off of it. So yeah, people are putting money into it because there’s a profit to be made. But mostly the game just became popular because it’s fun, cheap, and easy to pick up.

In a major win for the DOJ Boeing has agreed to a plea deal to avoid a criminal trial. As part of the deal Boeing agreed to a slap on the wrist after which they will be legally required to admit to being very naughty before they can resume committing crimes.

Gorely , (edited )

If you were I were to commit criminal fraud, we would go to prison. Why is it that a corporation, which is also considered to be a person, does not need to do something as life-altering?

LwL ,

It’s insane. Of course we can’t just jail a corporation and just shutting them down forcibly would cause more problems than it solves, but really that fine needs to be at least 50 times as high. Probably 100 times. Something that hurts, a lot. Not enough to outright bankrupt them, but enough to do that if it happens again any time soon. Their yearly revenue is 72 billion. This is the equivalent of someone making 50k a year paying a $200 fine for gross negligience that killed people. What the fuck?

ArgentRaven ,

Jail the executives and/or apply the fine to them. They are ultimately the ones that pushed this culture to happen, and as they say “the buck stops here”.

Wishful thinking, I know. It would never happen in real life.

Clinicallydepressedpoochie , (edited )

It may never happen but don’t give up on the fact that it could happen. We make up what is the collective consciousness of all civilization. Just as we thought pot would never be legal there was enough people who said it should be. One day you might wake up and the work we did in shaming the owner class, the robber barons, will be a reality.

Bytemeister ,

I don’t think a fine is an appropriate result. Any amount of money paid to the government is not going to get those people back, it’s not going to fix Boeing’s workplace culture, it’s just going to drive them to cut more corners to recoup the cost of the fine.

Clearly, they can’t be trusted to run their own QC operation in an industry where a few missed bolts leads to the violent deaths of hundreds of people. The “punishment” should be the creation of a QC and safety team that is accountable to the American people, which is paid for directly by Boeing. This team is financially liable for Boeing’s mistakes, and picks a fee based on how well boeing is passing QCs and inspections. Most importantly, Boeing’s C-suite is not allowed to privately communicate with this team.

Accountability should be the “punishment.”

Maggoty , in Boeing accepts a plea deal to avoid a criminal trial over 737 Max crashes, Justice Department says

My god is the DOJ going to pay the bar tab for Boeing’s team too?

They killed hundreds of people by lying and then got caught lying some more. Over and over we’re told that if there was ever any actual criminality it would pierce the corporate veil. So either that was bullshit or the DOJ is incompetent or unwilling to go after these murderers the same way they do other organized crime.

It’s time to make the existence of Corporations a campaign issue. If they aren’t doing anything wrong then they don’t need the shield right?

notaviking , in Pope Francis Decries Populism and Says There’s a ‘Cancer’ Ailing Democracy

Populism is a feature of democracy. It’s just like in life, easy answers, like fast food for example, are always easy to suggest, but in the long term might not be the best. But if you can show your voter base, eating these disgusting vegetables in the long term is going to do everyone good, slight inconvenience, major benefit. So there will always be the power hungry populist that will give easy and popular answers to hard questions, it is the voters duty to determine who has their long term interests at heart and who is able to bribe you with your shortsighted desires to get into power.

maynarkh ,

On the other hand, you do need to fuck up education big time, and suck hope out of the people with policies that only benefit the rich for decades for it to be appealing.

In your analogy, people today have no vegetables on the menu, just subsistence amounts of bread and water versus hamberders and cheap beer. And we get less and less bread every year.

People would like veggies, a lot of them, especially kids, but the veggie peddlers are beaten up and driven away by the bread and water people, since literal poison is easier to compete with.
