Imagine being a kid under constant surveillance. Boomers really are all helicopter parents if they vote shit like this through. That will fuck up their kids and grandkids big time.

Narjah ,

Bloomers are currently aged 57-75. It’s Gen X (46-56yrs old) and Millenials (25-40yrs old) that currently have most of the kids in school. Agree with the rest of your comment though.

As a millennial with a child, I’m so glad my parents didn’t have half the shit available to them that my generation has. Even in a lot of daycares the parents can watch the CCTV live of their child. Literally just sit there at work and watch their child.

And that’s before you get into tracking when kids get phones.

Boomers are born 1945-65ish. Usually they do not have kids in school anynore. This is the younger generation. X or millennials

CmdrShepard ,

Robert Evans just did a Behind the Bastards episode about this and how a lot of the trafficking ‘warnings’ spreading around social media are essentially modern day chain letters that people keep forwarding on to others creating FUD.

The episode started with him talking about a recent story of a woman who travelled to El Paso to meet her boyfriend and took an Uber from the airport. During the drive she saw road signs for Juarez Mexico (essentially a sister city/suburb of El Paso with the boarder running between the two), assumed the Uber driver was trying to traffick her to Mexico, and shot him in the back of the head while he was driving.

dethb0y ,

I remember that case, really tragic. People are absolutely stupid and will believe absolutely anything so long as it confirms their biases even a little bit.

FlyingSquid ,

They’re parroting conspiracy theory nonsense about a lab leak and how the U.S. was ‘funding gain-of-function research’ as if that’s not what pretty much all virology research is these days.

The fact is we need institutes studying coronaviruses. Especially in Asia, where so many originate. This is a very bad idea.

porkins ,

Conspiracy theory nonsense?

How is this nonsense?

According to a review by the HHS, the facility in China’s Wuhan, where Covid is said to have first emerged, has violated biosafety protocols and is not complying with US regulations.

They disregarded bio safety regulations.

The lab, located in the city where the Covid pandemic is believed to have begun, has faced intense scrutiny due to its reported security lapses and over research that has been carried out on bat coronaviruses.

Specifically COVID research.

Intelligence officials of the Joe Biden administration have been pushed by lawmakers to release more material about the origins of Covid. But they have repeatedly argued that China’s official obstruction of independent reviews has perhaps made it impossible to determine how the pandemic began.

China is conspiring in obstruction per the top leaders of the land.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

Unsupported claims about bio safety regulations regarding coronaviruses are worthless. And yes, the lab studies coronaviruses. I literally said that. What’s your point?

porkins , (edited )

Are you questioning the factuality of The Independent as a news source or did you fail to read the article? The claims of safety regulation lapses and Chinese obstruction are coming from the Biden administration directly. Are you indicating that they are fraudulent?

Ah, that article. Gotcha. The one that says:

Last month, the US officials released an intelligence report and rejected several points raised by those who argued that Covid leaked from a Chinese lab, instead reiterating that American spy agencies remain divided over how the pandemic began.

The report said the intelligence community has not gone further in determining Covid’s origins.

porkins ,

This does not negate the HHS claims that the lab was being negligent and unsafe.

iopq ,

It’s not a conspiracy theory if it’s an accidental leak. It’s happened before in the Soviet Union and people died, although it didn’t lead to an epidemic

The conspiracy theory is “COVID was engineered to affect Jews and Chinese less prior to being released on purpose”

These are different claims, and accidental leak is at least plausible and only blames the lab for improper safety precautions

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

The U.S. funding part, which implies it was engineered, is the conspiracy theory nonsense part.

jonne ,

The US was actually funding research in the Wuhan institute through the NIH. It makes sense, as the caves in that Chinese province are home to the bats that have corona viruses like the original SARS and possibly covid-19.

JasSmith ,

which implies it was engineered

It was engineered. They have admitted that. Coronavirus was manipulated in the Wuhan Institute of Virology to become more infectious. The contention is around the term "gain of function." Fauci changed the definition some years ago to skirt the funding bans imposed by Obama. His new definition requires intent to make a virus more communicable or virulent for humans. Since the WIV didn't intend to make it more communicable or virulent for humans, Fauci maintains it is not "gain of function" research.

I don't see why this is so hard for some people to accept. Chinese laboratory standards are among the worst in the world. Article after article after article details their abysmal safety standards. Why on Earth should we believe that this specific lab were somehow better? Of course it wasn't. Of course some unqualified technician made a mistake. This was always the concern about gain of function research, which was why Obama banned it.

FlyingSquid ,
@FlyingSquid@lemmy.world avatar

That is not an admission that COVID was engineered. The overwhelming scientific evidence is that it had a natural origin.

science.org/…/evidence-suggests-pandemic-came-nat…

JasSmith , (edited )

It’s not an admission that Covid-19 was engineered. It’s an admission that the lab at the epicentre of the outbreak was engineering corona viruses to make them more dangerous.

Without data, which China has destroyed, any research such as the paper you cite is working blind. I’m sure natural origin does seem the likely theory given the precedent they cite. But our intelligence agencies are privy to more than guesses.

We absolutely can study viruses without gain of function research. It just takes longer.

No. You cannot reliably study what a virus is capable of without it. All you can do is hope it mutates in a certain way.

If you’re arguing that intelligence agencies are unreliable,

I’m not, I’m arguing that they disagree and the ones who say it is a lab leak say so with low confidence.

why are you linking to a report from an intelligence agency?

I’m not, I’m linking to a New York Times article (hence nytimes.com) about how they disagree and the ones who say it is a lab leak say so with low confidence.

This is something you would have known if you had read the article.

Lol the last time I flew was a shit show. Here’s a recap.

As the flight attendant is giving us the safety instructions and about to lock the door, a lady opens the airplane door even though the path should have been closed down. The attendant was pissed since they all had to restart the pre flight stuff from the beginning.

When they finished it all a second time we got told that a part of the plane was broken and they were working on it. An hour later they said they were opening the door and letting us walk around the airport to get food or go to the bathroom for the next 25 minutes.

When they all came back the the attendance started the pre-flight stuff again. When he finish everything a person came up and said hey I’m on the wrong flight and the flight attendant just looked so shocked and confused since he had never had that happen before. They let the guy off as the attendant looked like he was about to give up.

The attendant had to restart the pre-flight stuff AGAIN. Luckily the plane was working now after two hours waiting on the runway and the flight began.

Why would I care where the energy department thinks a virus came from? Isn’t that like asking the music department for an opinion on nuclear power?

Wouldn’t a better evaluation of the validity of the DoE’s belief be actually reading their report and evaluating their methodology rather than simply saying their name invalidates their view?

Thanks I didn’t know that

JasSmith , (edited )

The DoE has a national security and safety mandate, and includes biotech laboratories and covid-19 technical assistance program. Additionally, the DoE has a very well funded and competent intelligence and counter-intelligence agency, responsible for assessing both domestic and foreign national security threats.

From the discussions I’ve had, most Texans want the prisons to be torture facilities.

The constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment is a joke in most of the country, but Texas takes it as a personal challenge.

Also says a LOT about the how the “justice” system works that cruelty is just fine as long as it’s not unusual, even if that usual cruelty is literal torture.

I despise how airlines bring people onto the plane, and then just sit on the runway for hours. Even in conditions where no one is dying.

bassomitron ,

Agreed. It’s completely stupid. I’d much rather stay waiting at the gate lounge over sitting on the plane in a queue. I don’t care if it’s “less efficient,” the lounge is at least more comfortable than the stifling conditions of economy class on modern planes.

As a side note, there were babies on that plane in those temperatures for that long!? You literally go to jail for leaving babies in a car in the summer because at those temps for too long will legit kill babies. No wonder all of the babies were screaming on that plane.

As a side note, there were babies on that plane in those temperatures for that long!?

That was my thought too, that’s deadly for babies and children. I’m astounded.

Skunk ,

I think the problem is about slot management and the way they work.

In ATC, at least in Europe but FAA is probably more or less the same, your flight can get delayed for whatever reason (meteo, atc capacity, airport etc…).

In case of a delay you get a SAM, slot allocation message with a new EOBT (estimated off block time). You can shorten this waiting time by various means, you will get an SRM (slot revision) and in order to be certain that you won’t miss this slot (or get a new worst one) you have to send a ready message.

Ready means door closed, ready for pushback. And that’s the problem here, that’s how you get stuck in an airplane on the ground, cause you’re « ready ».

That sucks, but a crew will generally not board a plane if they have a huge non negociable slot. But if they think the slot could improve so they can stick to their schedule, you’ll probably end up waiting in a shitty overcrowded cabin.

And sometimes it’s the airport doing shit like pre boarding a plane so they can pack passengers for another flight at the gate.

Wow, the more I write about how the industry work, the more I hate it. Time to change career.
