Umm, no X paid way too small of a fine, AND still had to comply with the court's order. Could have done it without the hassle, but chose to cost X's bottom line.

Bwaz ,

But Elon probably routinely has lost that much most times he's posted dumb stuff on Twitter himself. Hard to meaningfully fine a multi billionaire. But apparently he caved before the government got to really trying.

Badass_panda ,

For sure, but the fine wasn’t for noncompliance, it was for three days of noncompliance. Pushing that to a week would have cost him over $10m, pushing it to two weeks would have been almost a billion dollars

Telework killed it since they were left with empty buildings.

ohlaph ,

It sure did. Interesting model, but just not quite right.

YoBuckStopsHere ,
@YoBuckStopsHere@lemmy.world avatar

There were other factors like investors treating it like a tech stock rather than real estate and wasteful spending, but companies moving to telework really killed it.

brihuang95 ,
@brihuang95@sopuli.xyz avatar

Yeah weren’t they doing all this weird things to try and become the next big tech company even though their whole business model is essentially leasing?

Perfect example of a company that tried to go too big

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

I feel like they did that because a real estate leasing company would probably have a stricter dress code than a tech startup

Tangent5280 ,

Man, just terrible timing overall. If not for COVID, they could have pivoted into something a little more long lasting. But COVID just blindsided them, as it did many others.

Semi-Hemi-Demigod ,
@Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

If they had some more time they could have pivoted to supporting hybrid work for companies that have a geographically distributed work force. As much as I love working from home, there are some times when it's better to be in person, and WeWork could let people work hybrid without having to move across the country.

Tangent5280 ,

Yeah, and dynamically rent out spaces for single meetings and stuff if you want to go overseas to meet a client or something. This is what I initially thought it was for back when I first heard about it.

Imagine a team in some satellite office in India is having trouble with something, they ship out a specialist there to fix it, and they can rent out spaces from wework for meeting up and stuff.

mindbleach ,

Weren’t they fumbling a sure thing, even before that? I thought they were slightly on fire by mid-2019.

Chetzemoka ,

Lol, no. It was alllllllllll fake the entire time. It's just that once the IPO had happened and the founder ran off with his billions, they really had to try to make this completely unworkable business model work

"In retrospect, Neumann’s knack for amassing billions of dollars in venture capital with no viable business model was one of the greatest scams of the twenty-first century."

Zombiepirate , in Elon Musk's Twitter was fined $350,000 for snubbing the special counsel investigating Donald Trump
@Zombiepirate@lemmy.world avatar

Important to note that these fines were to enforce compliance, and they worked.

Twitter finally fulfilled their legal obligation before the cost really balooned, which was the entire point of the fine.

chem_bpy ,

Thanks for actually providing some context.

wavebeam ,
@wavebeam@lemmy.world avatar

Some more for ya: The fine started as a 50k fine, but then doubled every day it wasn’t paid. So it only took them a few days to actually pay it to stop the fines.

dan1101 ,

Now that is more compelling than a $350,000 slap on the wrist. That was a rapidly approaching trainwreck they were naturally interested in avoiding.

TommySalami ,

Which is honestly how I’m starting to feel all corporate fines should be. You want to slow walk a solution or request for a few days to feel big, you can do that for a few hundred thousand or more (that’s free money baby, and it should be put towards the public). You want to actually play hard ball? You will be staring down the barrel of complete financial ruin.

Now if we can just add more opportunity for criminal charges I’ll be happy.

stu ,
@stu@lemmy.pit.ninja avatar

That’s good to know! I was initially confused about how you double a $50k amount and get to $350k, but I’m guessing it works as an additional fine every day and is like:

  • Day 0: No fine
  • Day 1: Add $50k
  • Day 2: Add $100k
  • Day 3: Add $200k
jasondj , in Disney raises streaming prices as CEO Bob Iger warns of password sharing crackdown

All this password sharing crackdown is fucking frustrating.

My MIL doesn’t watch a lot of TV. She doesn’t have any cable or streaming services. But she does watch my kids a lot, so we have my Disney, Netflix, and Paramount set up on her TV.

So, what? Get the kids tablets? I know they shouldn’t watch a lot of TV, and my MIL is a saint and keeps them wicked busy most the day. She needs to plop them down and chill for a minute, especially when their baby cousin is there too.

mrvictory1 ,

Are there any specific series your kids are interested in? If there isn’t maybe you can cancel one or two subs, remove the apps on TV and the kids may not even notice, depending on their age. (I am assuming 5-10 based on your comment) D+ has Marvel and Star Wars but what does Paramount have appealing to kids? Maybe you can get Nickolodeon (apparently part of Paramount) from satellite.

Moore also said that one problem is that many Christians simply feel alienated and lonely, as politics have come to take over the community outlets that churches once held.

Oh, hey, it’s basically me. There isn’t room for “love your neighbor as yourself” in the Republichristian party. I don’t feel welcome at church anymore.

Need from from religion, not of religion.

Asafum ,

People don’t get that freedom from religion means that me, as an atheist, am protected from forced participation in your religious activities. That you are not allowed to use the government to compel or punish me for not participating, but that you can still participate in your religious activities.

Anyone downvoting that concept in disagreement is saying that they want to force their neighbors to be under the rule of religion.

Freedom from religion does not mean that you don’t get to practice. It’s that you don’t get to force me to live under religious rules.

hglman ,

I am saying we should force people not to believe in magic skymen. I am saying that we should not allow the practice of religious activity. Such activity is harmful and has no place in our world. It’s hate speech and should be stopped.

Asafum ,

I’m not sure you’ll have too many people on that side. For one it’s definitely not hate speech, especially if you consider other religions. Someone meditating practicing some random eastern religion/spirituaity isn’t hurting anyone and isn’t trying to convert people. They aren’t spewing any form of hatred. I’m behind putting pressure on hate speech for sure, but to say all religious activity is hateful isn’t really accurate.

People should have the personal freedom to practice their religion in “private,” but as the saying goes “the freedom to swing your fist around ends at my face.” (Something like that lol) so once your religion demands that I change and compels you to force me, that’s when the religion is dangerous and should be stopped.

I’m confused. Who in Barbie is gay? Kens whole thing is he’s utterly obsessed with her…

CluckN ,

I’m guessing that it’s due to general flamboyance? Ken saying he’s going to “beach off” the other Ken and wearing pink may have triggered their 4th grade cooties sensor.

Braysl ,

Yeah honestly as a gay woman myself I thought there wasn’t enough LGBT representation. Apparently there are two barbies who kiss on a couch at one point but it was so quick I didn’t see it, my friend had to tell me about it. There really wasn’t a lot of any sort of sexuality in the movie. Which makes sense, they don’t have genitalia.

for the second time this year.

Yeah, that’s what I was wondering - didn’t they just do this? I cancelled my renewal when they raised it the first time and it doesn’t close out until November. It was $80 a year when I first signed up - it’s now more than double that!

For me, the content is not very compelling / worth $168 a year. Especially when it’s evident that they’re focusing more on cinema releases now than streaming shows. No love lost here.

These companies are still in the mode where they’re pushing out mediocre content and trying to make their money back on nostalgia and merchandising and “background-content”. They’re in competition with each other to get - and maintain - as much /consumer/ attention as possible. I don’t want to speak for everyone else but I think, as /audiences/, we just really want compelling stories that are well written and well acted. As consumers, we should all open our eyes a bit to what we’re actually paying for and stop blinding re-subbing to stuff that’s not really worth it.

You’re a dumpster fire right now, Hollywood. Get your shit together.

prole ,

A good portion of them are currently picketing in an attempt to do that.
