MicroWave OP , in Canadian wildfires put nearly 60 million US residents under air quality alerts
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

From Montana to New York, forecasters predicted nearly 60 million people would see decreased visibility and poor air quality, including residents of Chicago, Detroit, New York, St. Louis, Cedar Rapids and Cleveland.

Alterforlett , in Facebook, Instagram face Norwegian ban from tracking users for ads

Although the fine is nothing to meta, I guess if more countries follow and they make it permanent it’ll have an impact. Either way a step in the right direction

Ricaz ,
@Ricaz@lemmy.world avatar

They’re also fighting the whole of EU for the same reasons. We won’t be getting Threads any time soon either

VanillaGorilla ,

Good. Fuck meta

Holyhandgrenade ,
@Holyhandgrenade@lemmy.world avatar

I’m glad Threads isn’t available over here. I wouldn’t have signed up either way but I’m sure a lot of people I know would have, so I would’ve been alienated from them.

sibachian ,
@sibachian@lemmy.ml avatar

i don’t support the idea of federating with threads; but as the platform is not available in europe - if they did activate federation, europeans would in theory flock to whatever instance federated with threads. which could be a boon for the wider fediverse; and could earn pixelfed and similar platforms room for competition with instagram etc.

Alperto ,

the fine is the less important, the fine is the big deal here. Not because Norway will be big enough to make them to change, but because it can send the example for the EU and other countries and if the rest of the world (I have very little hope for the US to go against a corporation) bans Facebook, then they’ll have to move and change their antics.

novibe , in China should be pressured on climate issues, US national security adviser says

Ah yes, China, the biggest investor in Green energy. They should follow the US’ lead instead I guess?

Cromulons , in Florida ocean temperatures peak to almost 100 degrees amid heatwave: "You really can't cool off"

That’s hot 🥵

Can confirm, am sweaty.

teft , in Biden's election war chest trails Trump's in size, filings show

On the plus side Biden doesn’t have to split his between his presidential campaign and a legal defense fund.

zombuey OP ,

I’m not positive but from the way they described it in the article I think this money is seperate from what could be spent on legal fees. But with Trump who really knows. Legality of actions never seems to really stop him.

GlitzyArmrest ,
@GlitzyArmrest@lemmy.world avatar

He has already been caught using campaign funds for legal defense in the past IIRC

Leeharveyteabag ,

The stepmom that’s also your sister? Because that’s embarrassing dude, you should talk to somebody about how your dad married your sister.

Good. Fuck him and fuck Twitter.

No thanks. I have standards.

Acronymesis , in A Trooper Issued More than 1,000 Fake Tickets. Connecticut Police Won’t Say Whether He Still Has a Job
@Acronymesis@lemmy.world avatar

It is truly wild how far cops will go to continue being shitty and not bettering themselves. Not surprising or shocking at this point, but just fucking wild.

buttsbuttsbutts ,

It’s like any kind of scammer, grifter, con artist, etc; at some point they’re doing more work than if they actually just did their jobs.

fiat_lux , in The top US economist under fire for taking an EU job

Under fire.

The fire in question:

"We fail to understand the consideration of non-EU candidates for such a high-ranking and strategic position, ... We are very concerned about the opposite views she publicly expressed and the potential conflict of interests between her new role and her previous functions with large American tech companies."
"No matter how competent, this is not in our strategic interest,"
"Don't we have excellent economists in the EU?"

Maybe by using violent imagery to describe polite questions and expressions of opinion, we devalue the seriousness of war and cast people asking genuine questions as destructive.

Why does English even have an idiom that equates shooting people with criticism? Do other languages do this?

Sorry for somewhat off topic post, I have no stake in or opinion on her job offer. I just got the shits with figuratively inflammatory language as a mechanism of engaging users in media and then realised it goes culturally even deeper.

Arotrios , in Extreme heat intensifies across south-west US
@Arotrios@kbin.social avatar

Important news, but they gotta start proofreading their articles better:

The city of Phoenix, which has been experiencing temperatures above 109.4F (43C) for 17 days in a row, was granted some modest reprieve on Sunday by a thick cloud cover, which was expected to keep the temperature around 115F (46.1C).

I'm not seeing how an increase from 109 to 115 degrees is a reprieve.

BrikoX OP ,
@BrikoX@lemmy.zip avatar

I think it’s just a weird wording, but not factually wrong. I read that as it would of been higher than 115F but thick cloud cover helped to keep it at that lower temperature.

Kittybeer ,

I live here. 115F with full sun feels worse than 115F with cloud cover.

Koraboros ,

If the expected temperature was 125 then 115 isn’t so bad

Tygr , in Elon Musk says Twitter cash flow is negative due to ad revenue declines, ‘heavy debt’

You don’t buy a heavily liberal swayed network and flip it heavily conservative. All of your advertisers will have an issue and it takes a long time to bring in new advertisers that like the new direction.

That’s like buying Truth Social and banning Trump.

P.S. I can’t stand Twitter. Never liked it, never will.

ThunderingJerboa ,
@ThunderingJerboa@kbin.social avatar

Hell lets be honest here, I think many advertisers do sway more heavily conservative but the problem is advertisers want stability. Elon basically opened the flood gates to let anything go (as long as he agrees with them) and that created massive change at once. So you have to play the game of pandering to your audience who are likely going to be on the left just due to the left being a far more numerous group and no big advertiser would want an ad anywhere near a racial tirade. Like the higher ups of these corporations can and may be incredibly racist but you don't want your brand associated with it since you basically cut off a sizeable part of your market in the space you are trying to advertise. At the end of the day they want money and they don't want to rock the boat visibly.

blazera , in Elon Musk says Twitter cash flow is negative due to ad revenue declines, ‘heavy debt’
@blazera@kbin.social avatar

Yeah this is all lining up way too neatly on the timeline of him meeting with Putin, then buying twitter. Guys a russian asset working to undermine western communications supportive of ukraine.

whatsarefoogee ,

People need to stop with these conspiracies that it’s some kind of 4d chess. We have a recorded history of Musk trying to get out of the deal with every excuse in the book. He only folded when his private communications becoming were being considered to become part of the legal process.

He ran his mouth, like he has done before with Tesla, except this time he got held accountable for it.

InverseParallax , in China economic data likely to show recovery is fading quickly

They’re going into a serious recession, between real estate and interest rates elsewhere slowing investment and spending there’s no major growth engine anymore, their consumer spending is collapsing in anticipation of a severe downturn.

India is taking their thunder.
