Ecks , in Netflix says people just kind of rolled over and accepted the password sharing crackdown

The second they crack down on me I will cancel and set up a PLEX server and just download anything I need. Not that I use it much anyways YouTube is my primary source of video content.

inclementimmigrant , (edited )

Then why wait and reward this hero that inevitably and predictably turned villain?

I cancelled the minute they announced and I don’t miss it one bit, got to watch Wednesday just like everyone else and picked up HBO.

preciousjewel128 ,

My Netflix is bundled with my phone plan. A family phone plan with households in 2 states. I effectively lost my Netflix access. I’m in the process of setting up a plex type server.

I’ve been looking into the same and goharddrive.com sells used enterprise HDDs for under $9/TB so that’s my plan.

FuglyDuck , in ‘The KHP waged war’: Federal judge orders end of Kansas trooper ‘two-step’ maneuver
@FuglyDuck@lemmy.world avatar

If any cop asks you if you’re doing something illegal… immediately ask for a lawyer. You’re not obligated to answer any questions or give them any information at all. this obligates them to either cease questioning you and let you go, or arrest you while they fetch a lawyer. they’re not going to do that over a traffic stop where they have nothing else.

Further, if they continue pressing or asking questions, or anything they learn (or “Learn”) from that questioning is tainted and inadmissible; and there’s a solid argument for “they didn’t have probable cause before asking questions, I asked for a lawyer and they said that gave them probable cause” will invalidate anything turned up from a search.

FizzlePopBerryTwist , in How LA Failed to Stop Landlords From Turning Low-Cost Housing Into Tourist Hotels

Seize it. Turn it into condos. Give it to the homeless. Make the landlords buy it back from them if they want it. Piece by piece.

andrewta ,

So your solution is to steal another persons property and then make them buy it back? Exactly how would you get that through the courts? Let’s ignore the words landlord and land, and let’s go with vehicle and owner , think the courts would agree with stealing the vehicle?

Catoblepas ,

Did you read the article? These property owners are breaking the law.

ShakeThatYam ,
@ShakeThatYam@lemmy.world avatar

The landlords are violating the law. Why shouldn’t their property be seized in that situation?

islandofcaucasus ,

If I was selling drugs out of a low income house that I owned, the state can and would seize the property. If a property is used in the commission of a crime, the government can seize it

Darkncoldbard ,

Yes, yes it is.

Old_Dude , in Netflix says people just kind of rolled over and accepted the password sharing crackdown

I think the crackdown is on certain types of devices and in phases. The first devices locked out were my android/google TV devices. A few weeks later, my xbox was locked out. My android phone still works, but can’t cast to the TV now. Apple TV and ipad still work. Need to try the PC.

HubertManne , in ‘The KHP waged war’: Federal judge orders end of Kansas trooper ‘two-step’ maneuver

asteriskeverything , in "Now I Know Why My Wife Was Fired from Her Government Job" | Nieman Reports

Thanks for the excerpt! It definitely enticed me to read. It’s a very long read that I have to save for later but the first half was awesome. This is what I expect from journalism.

The title is TERRIBLE like they tried to pick the most click bait title possible. It is from a single quote from a source that really doesn’t give much more context. What it really is about is the current technology and government surveillance and how journalists struggle to protect their sources with this technology and it always changing. It’s really fascinating and well written. And it’s not just America or China or whatever but also talks to journalists from other countries or talks in general what other countries have. (Like I said I couldn’t finish it today in one sitting. But I got decently far so grain of salt because this is all based on what I read so far)

Arotrios , in How LA Failed to Stop Landlords From Turning Low-Cost Housing Into Tourist Hotels

They're claiming a staffing and funding hurdle to get the existing laws enforced. If the department has been starved for funds to the point where it can't do its job, who made that decision, and more importantly, who donated to their political campaign?

This reeks of backdoor politics on the part of the landlords. De-funding an enforcement agency when a law holds up in court is a tried and true form of regulatory capture.

jjjalljs ,

“sabotage a government program and then say the government can’t do anything right” is a commonly talked about right wing strategy.

That’s a pretty shit take from the guy who was LITERALLY on stage when the Las Vegas shooter started firing into the crowd.

The looming civil war continues to simmer. Shit like this is going to ramp way back up as the election gets closer.

  • dragonflyteaparty , in Florida's new Black history curriculum says "slaves developed skills" that could be used for "personal benefit"

    This is the most disingenuous nonsense. How in the world could that quote be ok in any context??? There’s a reason black history and women’s studies are courses. Both groups of people are generally left out of history books. Hell, they’re trying to erase the fact that Rosa Park was a POC from the history books.

    MoonshineDegreaser , in Texas worker accused of being on drugs was actually dying of heatstroke
    @MoonshineDegreaser@lemmy.world avatar

    Good way to m lose your business license if you aren’t a general contractor. But since they are, supervisor is getting fired and nothing else is going to change.

    grte ,

    Working someone until they die of heatstroke should be a murder charge, not risk losing a damned business license. What a sick society.

    MoonshineDegreaser ,
    @MoonshineDegreaser@lemmy.world avatar

    You’re absolutely right. However there were rules and amenities put in place way before we were born

    I’ll give you an example. When I worked as a utility locator, I caught a GC’s team doing HARD drugs on a construction site. I reported it to the county. Nothing happened. Same team, same habits. I would speak to the GC directly about their teams, and they didn’t care.

    A week passes and the entire site is roped off with police tape. A heavy machinery operator from that team ended up running a cleaner over in one of those JLG cherry pickers with the monster truck tires. Turns out he had meth and thc in his system. He was fired. No charges towards the individual or the GC because it was chalked up to a workplace accident.

    Now why were they able to get away with that you ask? GC’s have to maintain state and county contracts and they even do work for the counties and states. They literally have all the power when it comes to construction. The only real way to get a GC shut down is if there are multiple accidents resulting in an unusual number of injuries or death. But even then, that’s usually when the feds and OSHA get involved

    meat_popsicle ,

    Doesn’t hurt that the GCs will often just lose envelopes full of cash around where certain regulators, investigators, and politicians live.

    It’s just by accident - those envelopes are just too damn easy to lose.

    MoonshineDegreaser ,
    @MoonshineDegreaser@lemmy.world avatar

    AND when they do get caught in something of that nature, they don’t really shut down. They change the company name under a new license and then magically get all the contracts that the previous company had

    prole ,

    Not in Texas. Not anymore. They are actively making it so much worse with the recent bill removing a requirement that employers allow construction workers to drink fucking water.

    marx2k ,

    Also… is Texas.

    I’m surprised they need licensing at all

    thepianistfroggollum ,

    You don’t actually have to be licensed to be a contractor in Texas.

    marx2k ,

    Damn, and I thought I was being funny

    thepianistfroggollum ,

    Texas does a good enough job of it on its own.

    Dookie_howser , in ‘The KHP waged war’: Federal judge orders end of Kansas trooper ‘two-step’ maneuver

    Damn. I had this happen to me in Wyoming.

    They said the stop was officially over but that they would like to ask some additional questions, then started accusing us of smuggling drugs.

    I am amazed that we’ve never had a female on the joint chiefs of staff .

    venorathebarbarian ,

    It’s 2023 ffs. I too am amazed (and shocked, and appalled) that we’ve only just now gotten a woman on the joint chiefs of staff.

    Sucks when I can’t even be excited cuz I’m just so disappointed it took this long.

    dhork ,

    She’s not there yet. We have to convince Coach to not throw a fit over it first.

    venorathebarbarian ,

    Ugggggh I forgot about that. So, it’s not happening then. Probably. Maybe next decade.

    Blamemeta ,

    Well the military is about 99% men, and even less women sign up past the first 8 years. It makes unfortunate sense.
