stopthatgirl7 , in Disney raises streaming prices as CEO Bob Iger warns of password sharing crackdown
@stopthatgirl7@kbin.social avatar

I guess we all knew this was coming after Netflix did it.

jonne ,

Despite Disney making record profits, it’s ridiculous. Anyway, the streaming era was fun while it lasted, it’s back to using BitTorrent.

FoxBJK ,
@FoxBJK@midwest.social avatar

Don’t stop streaming…. jellyfin.org

jonne ,

Yeah, I have a jellyfin server, but you still have to acquire the files.

metaStatic ,

Damn, if only there was a way to do that. guess we just have to keep paying Disney then.

vulkanbutt ,

I’ve been curious about jellyfin for a while. Is it worth migrating from plex?

RootBeerGuy ,
@RootBeerGuy@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

You can find tons of discussions of pros and cons online either in the dreaded reddit space of r/jellyfin and I think there are also already some threads on that in the lemmy community of jellyfin.

shortgiraffe ,

I switched a while back, I think so. Some premium features of plex are available free (like downloading media). It’s also less bloated. Personally I hated plex trying to shove it’s live tv packages or whatever at me. But honestly, if you’re happy with plex, I’d stick with it. They’re pretty similar.

ultimate_question ,

I’m not a power user but it’s way better than Plex imo. The personal media management features are on par with plex without all the bullshit ads / FAST services being shoved down your throat. To me it feels like Plex got too popular and the owners realized that a) they could make a shitload of money off of their existing userbase and b) the more they gear the app around FAST crap the more they can act like it’s used for legitimate reasons and not just piracy

MTLion3 ,

Just like with all great new eras/technologies, big corporations just gotta fucking ruin it

Draces ,

It’s just the modus operandi of capitalism

MTLion3 ,

Sure fucking is

jonne ,

Capitalism and killing the goose that lays the golden eggs, name a more iconic duo.

MTLion3 ,

XD Well obviously if they kill the goose then only they have the golden eggs, right? It’s perfect!.. for them

engityra , in JCPS parents frustrated with new bus routes as some kids get home at almost 10 p.m. on the first day

Those poor kids; tired and hungry and stuck in that crappy situation.

MicroWave OP , in US set to unveil long-awaited crackdown on real estate money laundering
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

The long-awaited rule is expected to require that real estate professionals such as title insurers report the identities of the beneficial owners of companies buying real estate in cash to the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN).

Spacebar , in Florida state attorney claims suspension is ‘retaliation’ against counties DeSantis lost

Is there any recourse? The FL SC seems to be allowing this.

How can this be legal?

Where were they the last 8 years?

Aurenkin , in Disapproval of Elon Musk is top reason Tesla owners are selling, survey says

If liking the CEO of a company is a prerequisite for using the product… guess I’d better become a hermit.

almar_quigley ,

It is when the CEO makes the company’s identity tied to himself.

Aurenkin ,

I don’t see what difference that makes. Elon is a cunt, so that makes it better for me to give my money to another company who’d rather see the world burn than change their core business? Doesn’t track for me but maybe I’m missing something.

downpunxx ,
@downpunxx@kbin.social avatar

take some responsibility in your choices, you horror show

Aurenkin ,

I know, I’m monster. I bought a box of biscuits the other day without even recognising which company it was from. Who knows what kind of nasty shit whoever’s at the top of that mud heap believes.

downpunxx ,
@downpunxx@kbin.social avatar

once you do know and choose to ignore, it's at that point you become the asshole

Aurenkin , (edited )

I’m making light but I guess I don’t really see what difference it actually makes. I vote for inclusive policies and try and model inclusive behaviour as much as I can day to day. Surely that makes more of a difference than giving my money to some other company who’s CEO is probably just as shit. I could be wrong though.

EDIT: Also I disagree on your take on knowing vs not knowing. If you’re going to hold the belief that you should only buy products from companies with nice CEOs I think you should have the courage to follow your conviction through. Surely not knowing or bothering to research and buying a product anyway would be almost as bad, there’s a good chance you’ll buy quite a few products from assholes otherwise.

Spacebar ,
@Spacebar@lemmy.world avatar

Seriously. The only difference between Tesla and every other car company is that Musk is vocal.

If you think other CEOs aren’t just as big POSs as Musk, you’re delusional.

oxjox , in Disney raises streaming prices as CEO Bob Iger warns of password sharing crackdown

for the second time this year.

Yeah, that’s what I was wondering - didn’t they just do this? I cancelled my renewal when they raised it the first time and it doesn’t close out until November. It was $80 a year when I first signed up - it’s now more than double that!

For me, the content is not very compelling / worth $168 a year. Especially when it’s evident that they’re focusing more on cinema releases now than streaming shows. No love lost here.

These companies are still in the mode where they’re pushing out mediocre content and trying to make their money back on nostalgia and merchandising and “background-content”. They’re in competition with each other to get - and maintain - as much /consumer/ attention as possible. I don’t want to speak for everyone else but I think, as /audiences/, we just really want compelling stories that are well written and well acted. As consumers, we should all open our eyes a bit to what we’re actually paying for and stop blinding re-subbing to stuff that’s not really worth it.

You’re a dumpster fire right now, Hollywood. Get your shit together.

prole ,

You’re a dumpster fire right now, Hollywood. Get your shit together.

A good portion of them are currently picketing in an attempt to do that.

MrSpArkle , in Pastor alarmed after Trump-loving congregants deride Jesus' teachings as 'weak'

Bunch of brainwashers upset that the people they brainwashed are getting brainwashed by someone else.

Plaid_Kaleidoscope , in Disapproval of Elon Musk is top reason Tesla owners are selling, survey says
@Plaid_Kaleidoscope@lemmy.world avatar

Shock! I imagine those are the same owners who bought in because of his rhetoric to begin with. Anecdotally, it seems as if less “car people” buy Tesla’s, as in they aren’t buying it for the technology or the engineering of the product itself.

But that’s just an outsiders pov.

GrayBackgroundMusic , (edited ) in Pastor alarmed after Trump-loving congregants deride Jesus' teachings as 'weak'

Moore also said that one problem is that many Christians simply feel alienated and lonely, as politics have come to take over the community outlets that churches once held.

Oh, hey, it’s basically me. There isn’t room for “love your neighbor as yourself” in the Republichristian party. I don’t feel welcome at church anymore.

yeldarb12 ,

You’re at the wrong church then. A good one can be hard to find in some areas…

Widowmaker_Best_Girl ,

Sounds like you should find a new church then.

Pandantic , in AP: Utah man suspected of threatening President Joe Biden shot and killed as FBI served warrant
@Pandantic@midwest.social avatar

I wonder how many MAGA Republicans come to his defense saying, “The police did not need to kill him, he wasn’t a threat. He was in his own home,” while they never gave two shits about Breonna Taylor, and possibly even said that she deserved it because she was possibly involved in crime. Well, here we are, you feel part of what the Black population felt, and so what can we change? Is it the guns, is it the law enforcement? Or is it the people at the top (same people, for both sides), who made this happen?

LibertyLizard ,

Was there any indication Breonna Taylor was involved in crime?

resurrexia ,
@resurrexia@artemis.camp avatar

Just excuses

Pandantic ,
@Pandantic@midwest.social avatar

She used to date a person involved in crime, and went to his house a number of times, but she was not with him at the time. That’s all, but she was being followed in relation to him.

LibertyLizard ,

So basically not at all.

Pandantic ,
@Pandantic@midwest.social avatar

Correct.

And just to be clear, I’m not saying she was involved in crime, I’m saying these things are why the police were watching her and why they might say she was “possibly involved in crime”. I do not believe she was at all, and from all accounts, she had already distanced herself from that person quite some time before her murder.

Lurial , in Disapproval of Elon Musk is top reason Tesla owners are selling, survey says

jasondj , in Disney raises streaming prices as CEO Bob Iger warns of password sharing crackdown

All this password sharing crackdown is fucking frustrating.

My MIL doesn’t watch a lot of TV. She doesn’t have any cable or streaming services. But she does watch my kids a lot, so we have my Disney, Netflix, and Paramount set up on her TV.

So, what? Get the kids tablets? I know they shouldn’t watch a lot of TV, and my MIL is a saint and keeps them wicked busy most the day. She needs to plop them down and chill for a minute, especially when their baby cousin is there too.

mrvictory1 ,

Are there any specific series your kids are interested in? If there isn’t maybe you can cancel one or two subs, remove the apps on TV and the kids may not even notice, depending on their age. (I am assuming 5-10 based on your comment) D+ has Marvel and Star Wars but what does Paramount have appealing to kids? Maybe you can get Nickolodeon (apparently part of Paramount) from satellite.
