takeda , in Only 1% of US Homes Have Changed Hands So Far This Year, Redfin Says

Only 1%... I mean, wouldn't it be concerning if it was 100%?

How much were they expecting?

Anyway the article says 14 out of 1,000, while 4 years ago in 2019 it was 19 out of 1,000.

Is that really surprising?

Solemn ,

Home turnover is generally a sign of economic mobility. People should be able to afford nicer homes a few times in their life, or move to pursue greater opportunities. Having 25% fewer homes being sold means those conditions that cause people to move (to hopefully better situations) are not occurring.

takeda ,

Yes, but we just had a pandemic, where most people were afraid to look for houses, afraid to not catch a virus that at the time was unknown. Then after things started returning to normal we got inflation, because supply couldn't keep up with demand so interest rates were jacked to stop it.

Then there's the thing that especially in some industries there's a massive push to keep working from home, so less motivation of moving.

I don't think the current statistics are surprising.

Solemn ,

I definitely agree that this isn’t surprising. Honestly the biggest factor for me is just the fed rates making mortgage rates ridiculous. This slowdown in home turnover was basically engineered by the fed in order to slow down the rapid home inflation we were seeing as everything reopened from the pandemic.

Still, it’s something worth putting out there so everyone’s aware of what’s happening.

I think execution is just wrong. I think many of the people who are executed have done wretched things but surely we don’t have the right to kill them.

chuckleslord ,

Even if our justice system was perfect and only convicted the people who actually did the crime… I would still be against the death penalty. But here in the real world we frequently murder innocent people and we, as a collective, have their blood on our hands.

BonesOfTheMoon ,

You’re absolutely right. (Cops are especially guilty).

I'm pretty sure these people were always racist, they just found out there's a bunch of other people being quietly racist who will back up their shitty decisions and then they became more brazen.

MrMonkey , in In-N-Out bans mask wearing for employees in some states

!news is fucking worse than /r/politics. The echo in here is so damn loud I can’t hear anything else.

bloopinator ,

Yeah if there is one thing about Reddit I wish wouldn’t carry over to Lemmy, it’s the political bias that’s completely disconnected from reality.

If you are legitimately upset over a company saying their employees can’t wear face masks, you’re in the minority. Most Americans don’t give a shit and have bigger things to worry about than mask policies in 2023.

gooeyglob ,
@gooeyglob@lemmy.world avatar

Funny how “muh freedom” means you should be able to not wear a mask, but others should be disallowed from wearing masks, even if they have actual safety or health concerns. Very consistent.

bloopinator ,

Funny how the same people who said “Private companies can do whatever they want” back in 2020 when people were upset about mask requirements are now losing their shit because a private company said their employees can’t wear masks.

A certain subset of people on the internet wants to die on the hill of masks like they’re almost upset that it’s no longer 2020 or something. Seriously go outside, touch grass, see that nobody gives a shit about masks in the real world.

Pardon my delicate city sensibilities but I don’t think children should be working in meat processing plants surrounded by death and danger.

BoxOfFeet ,

Have they not read “The Jungle”? Pretty sure this exact sort of thing was addressed a hundred years ago.

reverendsteveii ,

the thing about The Jungle was that we were supposed to read it and think “people need better working conditions” but a shockingly large number of people read it and thought “we need some sort of filtering system in place to keep all those immigrant thumbs out of the sausage”

Ragnell , (edited ) in Protesters storm Swedish Embassy in Baghdad ahead of planned Quran burning in Stockholm
@Ragnell@kbin.social avatar

This is an overreaction, but I don't see the point of the book-burning either. I mean, I'm a pagan who converted from Christianity but you don't see me out in public burning the bible.

Which is again, not to say that this riot wasn't an overreaction. You have a bunch of people with this idea that if one thing happens in one country, that country has that thing happening all the time. It wasn't even a Swedish dude, it was an Iraqi dude although god only knows what the media is saying. Still, come on. I know it's a sacred text but Christians are going to do that to any sacred text but their own.

The guy shouldn't have done it, especially since the Muslin world has been shown to be very sensitive on this topic. But I can't help but think that if Americans stormed an embassy every time someone abroad burned the US flag, the UN would have to move.

Just burn a Bible in front of the Swedish embassy and go on with your lives.

reverie ,

It’s embarrassing for all parties involved.
