Supermariofan67 , in Vigilante Pedophile Hunter Killed While Confronting Teens

Why were they charged? Sounds like a pretty obvious case of self defense.

MJKee9 ,

Probably a magnitude of force issue. If they didn’t legitimately fear for their life, then deadly force in response would be a crime.

Aiastarei ,

Magnitude of force of a 40yo vs. a teen makes the self defense acceptable imo

seathru ,

If you have to use any kind of deadly force in self defense, it is always in your best interest to be the first one on the phone with 911. Police aren’t known for their critical thinking, so the first story they get is most often they one they are going with until proven otherwise.

If one of the teens had called 911 and said some creepy guy catfished and physically assaulted them first, this story would probably read a lot differently.

Disclaimer: Not victim blaming. More of a PSA. And really one of the very very few times I would recommend calling the police.

Thank you. I wasn’t going to click on that trash.

Not significantly better:

“which scientists claim are more accurate than any available today.”
No they obviously do not. Yeah the fractions are easier in base 60, but they are not more accurate than just using rational numbers or radicals in any other base.

PhlubbaDubba ,

I’m partial to base 36

  • “10” is a square that’s also the product of two squares, 4 and 9
  • highly divisible, being able to simply express halves, thirds, quarters, sixths, and ninths, also twelfths and eighteenths but those are less common portions in daily use
  • you can represent it as [0 - Z], as in “…8, 9, A, B, C…”, it’s literally achieved by just adding the alphabet to the numeral system.
steakmeout ,

It is significantly better, it’s not spam reposting crap.

marxistsynths19 , in Parents of 9-year-old who went missing on New York camping trip received ransom note before daughter was found, governor says

Wtf if that guy had been wearing gloves it would’ve been a lot more difficult to find her. The idiot cops got called to another place while they were supposed to be watching the house.

Sherrifs have been doing shit like this for as long as we’ve had sherrifs…

It’s almost like we need a national agency to hold police accountable or, I dunno, try fucking anything?

Exactly. It's true she couldn't of known when she'd die, but surely she knew her health was declining.

She should've stepped down while there was a strong chance of her being replaced by someone with views like her's, rather than handing that decision over to her direct opposition like she did.

dynamojoe , in Matt Gaetz files motion to oust Kevin McCarthy as House speaker

As weird as it is, I think the democrats should save McCarthy. He’s a wretched asshole but the GOP isn’t going to replace him with anyone better. It also looks like he’ll ultimately take action when dire consequences are on the line. And let’s face it; the moonbats on the far right want him gone so they can elect Trump to the post.

SatanicNotMessianic ,

If they save McCarthy or if they can get moderate republicans lined up behind a more moderate R to take over, I think the requirement for support should be an increase in House comity and compromise. As much as I’d prefer a full progressive caucus running things, having a functional Congress would be preferable to what we have. I would support backing a center coalition that doesn’t get derailed by the current Republican war on culture.

Poayjay ,

Exactly. Not only is McCarthy not completely insane, but supporting him would drive a further wedge between fiscal conservatives and MAGA nuts. Democrats get credit for being reasonable and keeping congress running, they hurt McCarthy by making him out to be a RINO who deals with democrats, they make MAGA representatives look even more unreasonable, and they defang MAGA nuts by removing their ability to threaten McCarthy with removal.

InverseParallax ,

David Joyce is a reasonable moderate R, they throw it to him they could split the party.

worldwidewave , (edited )

I would hope that the Democrats would only back Kevin McCarthy on the condition that he ends the impeachment hearings he began last week in a dumb, failed attempt to appease his right wing and avoid the shutdown.

Wooster ,
@Wooster@startrek.website avatar

Huh… devil you know vs the devil you don’t.

Hypothetically—say McCarthy’s butt is saved—What’s preventing the Republicans from immediately voting to dismiss him again?

partial_accumen ,

Assuming Democrats were willing to save him, all involved could voluntarily vote McCarthy out (breaking that 1 vote requirement) then McCarthy could run again, this time with Democratic backing and not needing to agree to the 1 vote thing again. After that there would be no 1 vote requirement and McCarthy would be Speaker.

Telodzrum ,

No

The compromise is Jeffries is Speaker and split the committees evenly. Otherwise they can roast in their own shit.

rosymind ,

Yeah. She WAS someone to admire until she died, clinging to a position that she should have allowed to be passed on to a young blood when we had a fighting chance. Her greed for power soured her reputation, and forever ruined her legacy. I hope future generations can at least learn something from this

Fraylor , in Pinal Sheriff Mark Lamb’s office spent $200K on guns and ammo from an ‘inmate welfare' fund

While not surprising unfortunately, you’d be amazed at how many IBF’s get used like administrative slush funds. I bet they got some nice upgrades when they appropriated due to COVID.

One thing that I think needs a lot more attention is the victims compensation fund, and how at least in my state inmates skirt ever having to pay anything into it by abusing the indigent system.

kromem , in ‘IDK what to do’: Thousands of teen boys are being extorted in sexting scams

This is one of the things generative AI is going to inadvertently help significantly.

The plausible deniability of leaked nudes in an era where every face can be turned into a salacious nude photo is going to make any leverage disappear. As well as most demand/market for personal leaks.

Of course, on the flip side generative AI is going to feed into the most aggressive online scamming increase we’ve ever seen, so ups and downs.

Teenage boys won’t be exposed to repercussions for their exposures, but grandma is going to give all her money away to a voice cloned scammer that’s using dynamic guilt tripping to lead to a conversion.

It’s going to be an interesting next decade or so.
