From this band, I get more and more in love with Vivaldi, especially their Workspaces feature.

Kichae ,

Yeah, I use Vivaldi at work. I love it.

It's not on my personal devices, but if work is going to default to Chrome anyway, I may as well be using the best version of it.

Imgonnatrythis ,

I went whole hog. The sync features are great between computer and phone app (phone app is excellent!) and they actively disable all the terrible shit from chrome. It works with bing/chat gpt too which is nice. They have been very vocal against Google proposed changes and I’m confident they will work around them if at all possible. If not, hell yeah, I’m jumping ship, but I give Vivaldi a lot of credit for what they’ve done this far. I’m hanging in there for now.

I tried FF the other day instead of Vivaldi and I was like, no scroll wheel to switch tabs? No quick commands? No workspaces? Ugh I am prepared to keep using a chromium engine rather than give up all the “power user” features. It’s just sooo good.

Been using gestures for so long I constantly catch myself using them in other apps where it doesn’t work and getting frustrated at myself.

WatchMySixWillYa ,

I know, right?

I’m currently using both browsers, and I’ve been with FF for a very long time. But the things that come with Vivaldi from the very beginning make it my daily driver.

I think Google overestimates my Internet addiction and underestimates my steadfast hatred of advertisements.

Guy_Fieris_Hair ,

Been on chrome for like 12 years. Syncs across my phone, everything. I will make the switch. I have been wondering when google was going to go evil. Why not 2023 like everything else on the internet?

verdigris ,

Brother they went evil when they went publicly traded.

Dodge v. Ford is arguably the court case that proves all capitalist owned companies are legally required to not do the right thing. If Google was worker owned they would be a lot better.

Can you explain? Not familiar with this case

Essentially, the Supreme Court ruled that Henry Ford had to operate the company in the best interests of its shareholders, not his employees. It’s an awful ruling by the Supreme Court that has never been revisited.

grue ,

It’s one of a sequence of Supreme Court decisions (starting with Dartmouth College v Woodward and culminating most recently with Citizens United) that have led us down this path of corporate dystopia. For the full background, read this:

When was thar? Because if memory serves, they started sharing and selling our data shortly after 9/11.

They’ve been evil for a very long time.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

2 years from now Firefox will have blocked adblockers, and there will be chromium based browsers (not Chrome) that won’t have them blocked.

I don’t see why people seem to be thinking a large company in a capitalistic landscape isn’t going to side with profits. Firefox will oppose it openly right now and take the new users and then move to the same without lube and without apologies.

Small browsers that still have some morals before going public will build browers off chromium because of its ease, and they will be able to exclude those blocks. Likely means we will be using different browsers every few years until something else changes.

Maybe I’m pessimistic here, but anyone who just moved from Reddit to Lemmy should know that Firefox isn’t the answer, it is another greed driven overlord.

Mimicking the tokens on the otherhand… those sites we will need to boycott if possible.

slapchop ,

This is one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read.

Mozilla is a non-profit whose mission is to keep the internet freely available and privacy focused. See foundation.mozilla.org/en/who-we-are/

Firefox is built by open source developers who overwhelmingly have those same values. They have also been at this for many years now and have given us no real reason to doubt this commitment.

LifeInMultipleChoice , (edited )

“The majority of Mozilla’s revenue is generated from search functionality included in our Firefox product through all major search partners including Google, Bing, Yahoo, Yandex, Amazon, Ebay and others.”

Everything you just said was optimistic as fuck.

750 employees, 826 million dollars in revenue a year.

So what do they choose. Fire 700 employees and go down to 26 mill revenue?

Edit: when the hivemind disperses and sees Firefox follow Google in using tokens and blocking ad blockers, you may not see it as one of the dumbest thing you’ve read before.

glockenspiel ,

Makes no sense. Mozilla has no horse in the advertising race. But Google does. Almost all of Google’s profits are from ads. Ads keep the entire Alphabet house of cards afloat.

But not Mozilla. The largest connection there is them being paid for default lt search engine.

LifeInMultipleChoice ,

I read ~88% of its 800+ million dollar a year revenue comes from search engines.

Surely if that’s true it would have no impact on their decisions /s

Mikina ,

I love this quote, it exactly sums up my sentiments.

I’m actually looking forward to it, because it will finally force me to go cold turkey on so many bullshit websites I don’t need in my life anyway, which I was never able to do on my own, because the addiction simply is there. But not as strong ans my hatred of fingerprinting and advertisements.

spyr0w ,

same, I think I might start reading more books again, I wanted to do that for a long time now but I never head “enough” time as I always spent so much time on the internet

We should all take up writing backwards like Da Vinci. Benefits include:

  • not smudging everything we write
  • not getting as many cramps in our hands
  • making our writing much harder for righties to read.

I just wish Mozilla didn’t just tread Gecko as part of Firefox, the few who tried developing on it came to the conclusion that it’s not sustainable if the engines developer doesn’t give a fuck about you! :/

Aurenkin ,

Damn, that sounds like a real missed opportunity. Hopefully they come around on that one.

Well, they always did it like that and basically cut all their bigger projects in the massive layoff so I wish they did too but I doubt it :/

Yeah well German politicians have really gone out of their way the past couple of years to make that happen. Setting off to tank the economy and self-righteously pushing away any and all criticism has never worked out well for anyone…

AdGuard Home for DNS adblock and Firefox with uBlock Origin👌

Ivan171 ,

I installed AdGuard Home on a spare Android phone I have. Been using it as my DNS server for over a week now. It’s working beautifully.

LeLachs , in It really is just another Rootkit.

I don’t think it’ll go that far. What I’m more worried about is that the spec calls for multiple attesters. So Microsoft and others might even make their own under the spec.

Every platform that has a vested interest (e.g. is, or is a large contractor of advertising companies) will likely want in on this.

If the choices are in or out, any company beholden to investors or shareholders won’t really have a lot of options it seems.

pivot_root ,

Color me surprised that it’s Google that created and pushed for support of this shit.

pivot_root ,

It doesn’t matter if it goes short or far. This shit is DRM, and if any part of it makes it into browsers, it’s the end of the web as we know it.

I’m an android user and have been from the start.

However, I have tiny ears, so I can’t really use those in-ear earbuds that are common now. I did some research and frequently at the top of the lists for open earbuds that are Bluetooth are the…you might need to sit down for this…airpods. Yes, I know, crazy.

So here I am with airpods and a pixel 7. And they work great for $100 which isn’t a crazy price compared to earbuds from companies like Google or Sony. Yes, most Apple stuff is overpriced, but they make good hardware, and I wish fanboys would stop making everything so black and white.

bitsplease ,

I also 100% use airpods with my Samsung phone - I tried a few other models, and they were all garbage for one reason or another while my wife never had any issues with her airpods.

With the andropod app, you basically get first class support with them, and my pair has now been chugging along for a few years with no sign of dying on me.

Couldn’t agree more with your last sentence as well - the fact is that every single major tech brand has a myriad of issues. Apple is very far from perfect, but so is Google, and so is Samsung, and so is Microsoft. If buying from any of those companies makes you a sucker, then 99.99% of people are suckers - including most of the people standing on their soapboxes in this thread, as i highly doubt they’re all using purely OSS solutions on pine phones and old Thinkpads lol
