I mean, it’s different in a lot of very important ways. The way Lemmy sorts is incredibly transparent, one of the beauties of open source. It’s incredibly stripped down and you have a lot of control over what is in front of you. It isn’t deliberately opaque like Twitter et al. That almost always end up trying to make you angry to keep you engaged. There are not a lot of background algorithms and an army of white-collar employees with billions of dollars and decades of research at their fingertips trying to make sure you never look away from your screen. If you have an unhealthy relationship with social media, and you are on the fediverse, it’s a little more on you than it is on the instance/Admins/devs. People who are addicted to TikTok and other social media apps in a lot of ways are partially victims. How can we expect 15 year olds to be able to emotionally handle these sites that, once again, are spending billions of dollars over decades to learn how to manipulate us as much as possible?
I feel Reddit had more of them. I don't mind not getting spammed with OnlyFans messages from obviously not bots. I think they wanted my money, not my love.
I mean, it’s valid, if not for the incorrect reason. I personally fast past breakfast all the time , mainly because I’m not a huge fan of it. Otherwise, yeah…
Don’t forget the company meetings where leadership says things like “this is the best quarter we have ever had”, along with “we need to work harder to stay competitive”. Sigh.
That's not true. The senior management team will be getting raises in line with inflation and also huge bonuses for those record profits. Not to mention their share value increasing.
Lol it’s like going back in time. I remember the days when sites wouldn’t support certain browsers because of differences in programming (accidental, if you will). Now, we’ve gone full circle and are intentionally blocking use of a site when not using a particular browser. Wouldn’t this be considered monopolistic?
It would be funny if it didn’t hurt so much. Rent is too high, grocery bill has me intermittent fasting, and I walk/bike instead of driving now. Shit is rough out here.
Sadly, while the inflation rate is positive, it's cumulative on the previous >1.5 years of high inflation. So, unless we're paid more sometime soon, we're still being permanently short-changed.
The basket used for CPI is adjusted annually to replicate the average expenses for a person.
The real issue is just how to measure items such as housing and education expenses.
Someone who bought a house 40 years ago probably isn’t paying anything. Twenty years ago and they’re only paying a few hundred. Five years ago and they’re paying a couple thousand. Renting today and they’re paying a bit more. Similar issue with education.
If you live in SoCal or another VHCOL area, you’re probably experiencing a different level of COL change than someone in the middle of Iowa.
And how do you handle the changes in the basket? Did consumer taste change or are people changing their buying habits to match their budget?
CPI is just a way to take thousands of variables and boil them down into one number.
You know that ancient 90s alarm clock radio stashed in your basement? Put it on AM, turn it to the upper end of the dial where there's no stations (lower end tends to have a lot of sporadic noise from appliances and electric fields) and put it on a barely audible volume. Instant white noise generator.
Weirdly enough, that’s kind of how I found out I had tinnitus. I had my headphones on and got bothered with the high pitch static sound, but when I went to unplug it, I found it wasn’t even connected to any device.
