You can Patreon a monthly contribution to the developer of Lemmy, along with another contribution to the instance you usually use to help pay server costs. After that maybe also donate to the app you prefer to use (if not using Jerboa from the Lemmy developer, Dessalines).

SmoothSurfer , in Priorities!

No one is more hated than he who speaks truth

DmMacniel ,

what truth?

kresten ,

That the entire ecosystem is dependent on donations. If this new social media thing is going to work out, we need to divide our donations to all actors involved: developers, instance admins, and thirdparty app developers. It’s easy to forget the people behind it

DmMacniel ,

Aaand you can only donate to one project? So only donating to a frontend developer it would harm the developers of the plattform and providers?

kresten ,

That’s my thought at least. Donating to all actors involved would be best, but it’s easy to give the frontend developer all the love, because the work that’s being done behind is less tangible and harder to really see.

SmoothSurfer ,

They don’t even know what they are down voting. They do it just because it is against sync. You are just stating we should support foss devs. They literally are just bunch of fucking idiots that probably came here just by following others. It would be awesome if they could just fuck off from fediverse and go lurk in reddit.

my favorite one is and its a fork which would never be able to happen with any proprietary app

zoe ,

sorry, what does this mean ?

png ,

I am going to assume you want to know what a fork is. if not, ignore me.

If the sourcecode of a software is publicly available, someone can take that sourcecode and develop it into a different direction than the original software. In this case, a third-partt reddit app called Infinity is being developed into a Lemmy app by someone who is not the original dev.

zoe ,

thanks, it makes sense now.

PopOfAfrica ,

It means that, because the reddit version was open source, some completely different Dev was able to take it and rework it to work with lemmy

nightynight ,

“Taking advantage” you meant the developers have to inform each other and sync up on one release?

zoe ,

just an assumption ( also u guys need to be open for some critique, facking hell! ) but also why his pricing is way more than he used to charge for sync for reddit ? said he would work on the app ‘full time’: what does that even mean ? would he quit his day job for the app ? would such an app require full time maintenance ? also pricing more than he used to do without sparing any thought for the instance admins kinda fishy: i know that lemmy code is beyond his reach but placing ads on feed is like taking instance owners for fools and shidding on them, at least while pricing leave some room for people so they can donate to instances until something serious is done about it

gsfraley , in Priorities!

kresten ,

Honestly. This isn’t some centralized platform. Donating at least some of the profits to the people making the app possible seems fitting. While I don’t agree with the API pricing of Reddit, I think it’s fitting that it should cost something at least, if not only to cover wage for the people working on the API

SquishyPandaDev , in Richest country in the world!
@SquishyPandaDev@yiffit.net avatar

So this isn’t far from what you should do if you’re uninsured. Ask for an itemized bill. Refuse to pay their initial offer. Suddenly the hospital will be quick to lower your bill and work out a fair payment plan. Hospitals hate collections as much as you do

Edit:
Oh, forgot to mention, this is what insurance does. You’re just acting the same

azimir ,

And how about when insured and it’s still insane? I had a regular checkup on a medical device. The doctor 15 minute long “how’s it going, looks fine, see you in a year” was billed at $360 and using the machine to check that the device was fine was $250. With other add one the total “cost” was $690. Outrageous.

Insurance (supposedly good) paid about $300 of it. Holy crap. A single visit to have a doc say you’re good at a rate of $1450/hr ended up being more than I can save in a month. Complete insanity. I’ve gotta get out of this country.

merthyr1831 , in Richest country in the world!

This actually works lmao some people just refuse to pay and they eventually drop the debt collectors

Psythik ,

It really does work. I’ve never paid a hospital bill ever. Yes your credit is fucked for the next 7 years, but all you have to do is have some patience and your score will recover. Debt collectors can’t do shit if you won’t pick up the phone. I’m a Millenial; not picking up the phone is all I know how to do.

smokeppb , in Richest country in the world!
@smokeppb@lemmy.ml avatar

In my experience, they sell the debt to a collection agency and you start getting nasty phone calls. That, on top of the other stuff you would expect like credit history hits. These charges I got insurance to figure out they were bogus, like billed for receiving treatments my grandmother never got, medications never administered, you name it. Took a lot of phone calls and getting a lawyer though. The whole system is irredeemable.

Kalkaline ,
@Kalkaline@programming.dev avatar

US healthcare is full of waste, greed, and deception. For how much we pay as a country, we should be getting better outcomes and our healthcare workers should be paid better, but neither is happening.

iwasgodonce ,

at least where I am in texas, they tell you what it will cost before you go. When I was in utah, I asked them beforehand what it would cost and they said it would be impossible to know until after the procedure was done. The front desk person said even they weren’t even allowed to know the prices beforehand.

Kalkaline ,
@Kalkaline@programming.dev avatar

That was a federal law change, not a Texas law. You think Texas politicians give a fuck about their constituents?

iwasgodonce ,

good to know. yeah, it didn’t seem like the kind of thing for texas to do on its own.

Which not all hospitals are following… The fine for breaking the law is less then the “competitive advantage” of screwing over consumers.

Psythik ,

OH MY GOD THEY CALL YOU. THE HORROR! WHATEVER WILL I DO?

Seriously, though, who cares? All you gotta do is not pick up the phone. If you’re younger than 40, you’re not answering calls from random numbers anyway. So they ding your credit. Big freakin’ deal. Credit scores are pointless since none of us can afford to use credit anyway. And it all goes away after 7 years, like it never happened.

The only people who agree to pay hospital bills they can’t afford are suckers.

Cyberwitch_7493 ,
@Cyberwitch_7493@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

This comment is so out of touch that it sounds like you’re drowning in a swimming pool of gold wtf.

I can barely afford regular-ass doctor’s appointments and my monthly meds. My credit score and abysmal income literally defines where I can rent an apartment, and that’s why my commute is over 40 minutes via highway without traffic.

If I go to the hospital and it’s not worker’s comp, I’m SUPER DUPER FUCKED, and I know that’s a pretty typical situation.

pinkdrunkenelephants ,

Grow the fuck up.

Medical debt will ruin a person’s credit record, denying them access to housing and even some employment. It absolutely does matter and is not trivial.

CADmonkey ,

He was down voted, because he told the horrifying truth.

The latest version of FICO doesn’t even account for medical debt under a certain amount.

If enough people just stopped paying, the whole thing would collapse. But there’s always someone who gets scared and pays up.

No. But focusing on supporting one single app instead of the platform is not sustainable for the platform. This meme is just a reminder to support the platform as well.

collegefurtrader ,

Who are you speaking of? How many users are on sync versus all the others?

hernanca ,

My opinion is that what matters is how much money each part of the network receives.

For example, instances tend to be transparent about their funding. And we can see that some of them are just months away of being out of cash. Meanwhile, we see people subscribing(!) to a very expensive app that charges $20 to remove ads (and tracking and data collecting) otherwise.

I think is okay to keep people aware of these things. Getting defensive about it is just a waste of energy. For both sides.

WiildFiire ,

Would you have ever posted something like this is sync didn’t come out? Why didn’t you post something like this before sync came out?

kresten ,

I’m assuming that it’s because Sync is the first monitized app

kresten ,

I agree with you. It’s not to attack sync users, it’s just to remind them that there’s an entire ecosystem dependent on donations

ShustOne ,

I haven’t seen a single call to action to donate to Lemmy other than the static sidebar on desktop. Something like that would be far more helpful than complaining about previous Sync users continuing to donate to Sync. Nothing is being taken from Lemmy, Sync already had a big user base and is bringing many of them over here thanks to the app. Let’s call to action to them to donate to instances instead of complaining.

devnull406 ,

Accurate. I used Sync for Reddit until they were forced out. I then switched to Sync for Lemmy for the familiar interface, the ease of setup, etc. Sync literally brought me to Lemmy.

Since then I looked around and still prefer this app. On a side note: why does the UI for Voyager on Android look like some old version of iOS?

Hate all you want but Sync being popular is a good thing for Lemmy adoption.

Willing to bet the lemmy platform is more likely to get support from the type of person that would also pay for an app like sync than it is to get money from people that like to grandstand like OP.

Gur814 ,
@Gur814@beehaw.org avatar

I’ve donated to Lemmy, Beehaw, and Mastodon and came here because Reddit killed Sync. Lemmy is full of gatekeepers and it’s bringing the platform down. Half the posts are whining about reddit and the other half are whining because someone doesn’t adhere to the perfect open source ethos and shun anything not completely free. It’s getting tiring. No wonder Lemmy’s active user count is decreasing.

Coehl ,
@Coehl@programming.dev avatar

I’m thinking the sync app will entice enough people with… differing views that the in-place gatekeeping will lose its bite.

I appreciate the FOSS ecosystem, but the people around here seem to think that you should never be able to sustain a living from writing software. Like I should just go back to construction and only write code on the side.

That attitude can kiss my ass.
