System drive: 1TB
Use case: Very important stuff like drivers etc. or programs that refuse to use anything besides C:\ or put their stuff into AppData.
Gamedrive: 4TB.
use case: Roms, game launchers, emulator files.
For my main machine: Sys, 1TB. Games, 4TB (actually 2x 2TB in raid0). Backups and misc: 10TB. Daily backups, g/f/s for sys, and incremental daily with monthly full for games.
Then I have all my media and actual files on a nas, along with the desktop, documents, downloads synced between all machines; any files that are for storage and drive images (for machines with only 1 drive and cannot manage images locally) get stored here too. 2x 10TB.
Then those drives are in raid1, are under btrfs with snapshot abilities, are backed up to a 8TB external every month, and unplugged after a successful backup to avoid a ransomware attack scenario. This drive is actively cooled to prevent overheating with hours of read/write activity. Every night, critical files are also backed up to two different off-site data storage services, on different continents.
I got tired of data loss 15 years ago, and now I horde everything, but it’s all for a purpose. Game saves, stories, photos, archived projects long forgotten, and so much more.
That was my previous game drive, and I had a small ssd (I think 256GB).
E: to clarify, I went from sata to nvme, and the sata ssd is now in another machine. The drive that came out of that machine is 480GB and is now powering a Debian 12 server.
Thanks for the enlightening framing. When they’re rounding up people they don’t like we should tell them it’s ok, it’s been worse
Nobody fucking cares. This isn’t some academic exercise to rank crazy times. This is the very real political strategy of a party about to take power in the US. This view from nowhere shit is so exhausting.
It’s been somewhat traumatic. I had to take things back to where they began two generations ago, return to the roots that once were, though they’re new to me. I’m grateful that you and I could commiserate, at least. It’s validating to speak to others who felt the same.
I am genuinely happy for you, but I’m poor so I literally don’t have the money to move. The best I can do at this point is put away a little of money when I can (not often) and hope for the best.
Same. In my opinion, America—“the Great Experiment”—is at this point mostly a failed experiment. But the goal for which said experiment originally strived is still a worthy one.
It’s like one of those idiots came up with this stupid idea and now none of the other morons can call this out because they would have to admit that they are watching porn.
Yeah, but a lot of conservatives, and by extension fascists, are extremely hypocritical on the surface, except they like to use “hypocrisy” as a tool against their opponents, and by “hypocrisy”, I mean not following the strawman version of your ideology. I personally call this as “rulebending”, they’re manipulating their opponents rules to be even higher and thus choking them with it.
On a deeper level they just want a lot of power, which includes them being above the law, as long as they’re loyal to the dictator/king. If project 2025 succeeds, expect one of them getting caught on live with real CP, maybe even raping a child, then will just go “so what? I can do this, you are not allowed to!”.
They’re not really comparable. Crypto and blockchain were good solutions looking for problems to solve. They’re innovative and cool? Sure, but they never had a widescale use. AI has been around for awhile, it just got recently rebranded as artificial intellectual, the same technologies were called algorithms a few years ago… And they basically run the internet and the global economy. Hospitals, schools, corporations, governments, the militaries, etc all use them. Maybe certain uses of AI are dumb, but trying to pretend that the thing as a whole doesn’t have, or rather already has, genuine uses is just dumb
I feel like you’re being incredibly generous with the usage of AI here. I feel as though the post and comment above refer to LLM/image generation AI. Those “types of ‘AI’” certainly don’t run all those things.
The term AI is very vague because intelligence is an inherently subjective concept. If we’re defining AI as something that has consciousness then it doesn’t exist, but if we’re defining it as a task that a computer can do on it’s own, then virtually everything that is automated is run by AI.
Even with generative AI models, they’ve been around for a while too. For example, lot of the news articles you read, especially about the weather or news aren’t written by actual people, they’re AI generated. Another example would be scientific simulations, they use AI to generate a bunch of possible scenarios based on given parameters. Yet another example would be the gaming industry, what do you think generates Minecraft worlds? The point here is that AI has been around for awhile and is already being used everywhere. What we’re seeing with chatGPT and these other new models is that these models are now being released for public access. It’s like democratization of AI, and a lot of good and bad things are bound to come of it. We’re at the infancy stage of this now, but just like with the world wide web before it, these technologies are going to fundamentally change how we do many things from now on.
We can’t fight technology, that’s a losing battle. These AIs are here and they’re here to stay. So strap on and enjoy the ride.
I think you misunderstood me, I’m not trying to make some point about “LLMs aren’t ‘real AI’” or even what is and is not AI. I’m just saying the post is talking about that type of AI specifically and I wouldn’t say those types are controlling that much of the world.
It’s not, unfortunately. I was positing, would it read as misogynistic (I can see why you read it that way) if instead it had been a punk artist who was also a woman? Because then at least it would be women paired up against women with a similar message.
But I also agree with the likes of Theodor Adorno in that capitalist modes of production have been influencing the art of music negatively for a hundred years or more. (As such, punk hasn’t been safe from such capitalist influence, for example)
In other words, I agree with the sentiment that capitalism is making music less dangerous and anodyne, but I also see how this meme is formatted in a way that can be read as misogynistic.
Edit: Or you could switch the bottom pics out for stuff like the bands The 1975 or Imagine Dragons. There’s definitely some real shitty all-dude bands.
I’m sorry that was a bit glib of me, allow me to elaborate.
I’m of the opinion that basically any version of this meme that is not misogynistic would not be recognized as a meme by a modern audience.
First of all, the meme does not exist in isolation, it remixes images, ideas, esthetics already in the meme ecosystem. The bare-chested black and white image is a clear callback to the chad and old school cool archetypes, both quintessentially masculine. In fact, I’m not sure there is an image that you could present to modern meme audiences that stars a women and would immediately say “uncompromising cool artist - gender neutral”. That is in and of itself in indicator or pervasive misogyny, but that’s not surprising because the misogyny is often overt.
Which is my second point. The “black and white bare chested man cool, women and twinks and gender-nonconforming people not cool” is not an accident of the image choice, it’s a feature. A lot of standard meme templates are just vectors to enforce the norms of patriarchy by shitting on “soy boys” and “simps” and other men deemed unworthy. The misogyny is baked into the format.
The third issue is that nostalgia memes are inherently misogynistic, even by meme standards. They aspire to RETVRN to the (often imagined) good old days when men were men and horses were horses and patriarchs traded women among themselves like cattle.
The medium is a message, and this medium really fights you when you try to transmit the gender neutral version of this message.
That said, I’d love to see a version of this meme with Bikini Kill as the top picture and commercial manly men losers as the bottom row. I just don’t think meme audiences would get it.
