Threadiverse is long form, basically Lemmy, Kbin, Frendica and Writely. Fediverse is them plus Mastodon and FireFish

Gotta love Biscayia…some say it was the inspiration for Atlantis when it slid into the sea (which was soup at the time, giving us “bisque”). 😂

snek_boi , (edited ) in Ain't no harm adding more parm

Ummm… This is a bit grotesque, so if you don’t like graphical bodily stuff, maybe skip what follows. Anyway, someone gifted me really expensive and rare cheese recently. By that point, I had been eating less animal products, so I had forgotten my body couldn’t really handle dairy…

My friend and I tried it and it was absurdly tasty. We kept on eating, grating, eating, grating… In a single sitting, my friend and I ate the whole thing.

Oh boy, what a mistake. My belly ached. I was bloated. ‘Not a problem’, I thought, ‘tomorrow morning everything will be okay’. My lactase-abundant friend left and I went to sleep.

Middle of the night. I woke up. Nausea. Dizziness. I just had to go go the toilet. I ran. Oh boy, my stomach wasn’t happy with me. At all.

I figured I’d wait and see if this ended up being serious. It could be temporary. Except, I had to go to the toilet again, and again, and again.

“OK, snek_boi, you need electrolytes. You won’t die from lactose intolerance-induced dehydration. I refuse”. So I went to the store, got the electrolytes, and chugged them as I came back. Alright. Time to sleep, again.

I managed to sleep, except when I woke up I still felt nauseous. I went to the bathroom. This time, (TRIGGER WARNING, GROTESQUE) I was pooping radioactive water. It was bright yellow, almost like Powerade or Gatorade or something like that. Wtf.

I took out my phone to see if I should go to the hospital. Turns out, if you eat too much cheese, it goes through a whole process as your body tries to decompose it. The very last step is pooping bile, which is secreted in an attempt to digest the fat in cheese.

Knowing about that whole ‘cheese digestion process’, I guessed I wouldn’t die anytime soon. I just sat on the toilet, drinking my electrolyte solution, contemplating, contemplating my poor decisions, contemplating the wondrous complexity of chemistry and biology, contemplating the fragility of human life and good gut health.

TL;DR: Too much cheese can mess you up.

BarrelAgedBoredom ,

I’m sure you know this but I felt the need to put this PSA out here. You can buy lactase pills at the pharmacy to mitigate some of the intestional catastrophe from eating dairy

Blimp7990 ,

not funny, then

sounddrill ,

But the meme has the right intention. Google WILL deploy a rootkit to make it make sense

superkret ,

Google already has rootkits installed on about 50% of devices that access the world wide web (Android phones).

sounddrill ,

I am painfully aware

superkret ,

FYI it’s perfectly possible to get rid of Google on an Android phone without rooting or messing with custom ROMs.

Check out c/[email protected]

sounddrill ,

Not fully, without affecting stability

Stock roms may not play well with microG signature spoofing :P

superkret ,

I run my phone without microG or Goggle Play Services.
Messaging apps run in the background so they can receive push messages, location works fine over GPS and speech recognition and synthesis works fine without Google Play Services or internet access (in English at least).

sounddrill ,

Which phone?

superkret ,

Gigaset GX290
It isn’t supported by TWRP, Magisk or any Custom ROM, so Android’s settings and ADB are the only ways to manipulate it.
There’s no way to install microG on it. So I still use some Google stuff (Speech recognition, speech synthesis and GBoard), but I deny them internet access through Netguard so they can’t phone home.

sounddrill ,

Which android version?

It should be supported by magisk I think

superkret ,
  1. But honestly I don’t want to root it without a custom recovery and I fear it could stop my banking apps from working.
sounddrill ,

It’s actually riskier with a custom recovery since it’s not officially supported by the root solution developer(magisk in this case)

superkret ,

What happens if Magisk were to brick my phone? Can I reset it to unrooted factory defaults without TWRP?

sounddrill ,

You can, with fastboot

If you have a mediatek device, there’s sp flash tool

superkret ,

thanks!

sounddrill ,

Btw you got some gsi potential

Spudwart OP ,

There’s no way to say this one way or the other until it’s implemented.

However to “verify” a system from a hardware level to any decent level of accuracy would require kernel level access.

Technically you’re correct, until you’re not.

FlexibleToast ,

That’s still not what a rootkit is. Lol

MooseBoys ,

While WEI definitely doesn’t qualify as a rootkit itself, any useful attester is going to require aspects of one - whether it’s a phone asserting that it hasn’t been rooted, or a PC running with approved SecureBoot and TPM keys.

Tetsuo ,

I dip a tampon in THC oil and insert it in my anus. Learned it on fox news.

Unfortunately, this is inspired from a real stupid thing some young people did but with alcool. Goes too fast in their bloodstream and some supposedly ended up in a coma.

SwingingTheLamp ,

I have to believe that that’s a myth. Just thinking about it for 2 seconds makes believe that nobody has ever done it. Why? Tampons have to be compressed inside an applicator for insertion. If you leave one inside the tube, it won’t soak up enough liquid to matter. Take it out of the tube and soak it in liquid, well, now it’s a puffed up, soggy mess. Good luck getting that into an orifice.

JimmyDean ,

It is called ‘boofing’ and the number of people that do it is more than 0. Because of how the body absorbs substances that way, people can get a stronger effect than consuming them orally.

SwingingTheLamp ,

I’ve heard of it, since even Supreme Court justices do it, but it’s the tampon part, specifically, that I doubt.

HawlSera ,

deus ,

Jakeroxs ,

Chromium isn’t technically Google

Dubious_Fart ,

Still serves googles goal of control over the internet.

Da_Boom ,
@Da_Boom@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

It’s maintained by Google, which is pretty much the same thing - in the end, they get to decide what features get implemented and what doesn’t make the cut. Sure we can fork it, and we can make our own, but in the end as long as their code is the main base, they have a lot of control over all the different forks, as usually the forks will have to keep rebasing their code off of new updates to stay as secure and up to date as possible.

smileyhead ,

It is, good luck hard forking such a huge codebase.

Jakeroxs ,

I mean what would stop a company from doing that? I get why they don’t, because a lot of changes and fixes get implemented into the code from various companies/individuals, but if you had enough manpower and money, it could be done.

smileyhead ,

Exaclly money and manpower. Noone is going to do it.

SpaceCowboy ,
@SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca avatar

It probably doesn’t matter for what they do. There isn’t really much need for an ad blocker on a browser that’s going to a store page which is essentially an ad for a product in and of itself. A steam user actually wants that store page to load, why would there be a need for a store page?

And they could transition to something else if Google does something that affects them.

Redex68 ,

I don’t think it’s too weird. So many apps today are just Chromium wrappers. It’s just easier to use a premade base, plus you don’t have to develop the web and desktop version independently, they can literally be the same code.

BeardedGingerWonder ,

While that’s fairly typical and good practice in dev circles, we’re talking about a company that’s single handedly elevated an entire OS to prevent a big company taking too much power. I think the key here is they don’t really compete with Google.

drathvedro ,

Yep, just like slack, spotify, and anything else looking fancy while wasting few gigs of ram to just open. They’re built on electron, which is practically chrome without tabs.

qwertychomp ,

I wish they could bring back mozilla prism. Like all this electron web app shit is popular, so we don’t we use the faster and more efficient browser engine and use gecko!

unexpectedteapot ,

Speaking of Mozilla, the project they dropped and fired all of their employees working on it all while giving CEO a million dollar raise, the same one that provided most of the performance improvements in the Quantum update, Servo is targetting being an embedded solution. floss.social/

isVeryLoud ,

Nice, I didn’t know Servo was still being developed!

This whole Chromium fiasco is partially Mozilla’s fault, they let Google grab the embedded browser monopoly by making Firefox hard to componentize and letting Electron take all the market share. No competition.

ArcticLynx ,

Do I still use chromium when I visit the steam website via firefox?

kurosawaa ,

Da_Boom ,
@Da_Boom@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

Anything that uses the electron framework uses chromium.

Although in the case of steam they are using the Chromium Embedded Framework(CEF) to embed the steam store into their interface, as well as to power the steam overlays browser.

The worst part is, the CEF really is the only way to implement browsers inside other interfaces. OBS uses it too for it’s browser source. There really isn’t any alternatives - if only FF could create it’s own Firefox Embedded Framework to compete, but that’s probably not in the cards due to costs. Mozilla is a not for profit relying on donations and grants.

And electron is a method for creating desktop app interfaces using website code, it’s used for the interfaces of Discord, slack, teams, Streamlabs (yeah they ripped out the OBS Qt interface and replaced it with electron), and sooo many other modern applications that it’s hard to make track of. And it uses essentially the same thing as CEF at its heart.

Basically any website can be wrapped in an electron wrapper to produce a standalone desktop app.

HawlSera ,

Yeah, but Google putting their fuckery in it is the issue.
