KillingTimeItself , in Riot official response about League of Legends on Linux for Vanguard anti cheat

“linux does not allow us a good enough ability to confirm boot state”

Skill issue, L for riot games.

Realistically, if this is true, it’s because of security. Shocker on that one really. Also, there are probably only 800 players on linux because the anti cheat doesnt fucking work. But that doesnt count apparently

melpomenesclevage ,

Yeah I didn’t know I could play it.

KillingTimeItself ,

i was convinced that LOL didn’t boot under linux, im still trying to figure out how they’re getting these numbers.

melpomenesclevage ,

Right?

sugar_in_your_tea ,

Skill issue, L for riot games.

I’m no expert here, but couldn’t they rely on SEV/SME or similar? My understanding is those features encrypt RAM, which would make it a lot more difficult for an attacker to do memory-based attacks when the game is running within a VM. I expect “physical attacks” would include attacking a VM’s memory, but again, I’m not an expert.

I also wonder if this could work in a containerized environment instead of a VM, so players could just run a lightweight container and preserve direct access to resources like the GPU. I don’t know if GPU access can be required to be encrypted as well, but surely this is a massive step forward.

KillingTimeItself ,

i have no clue myself frankly. Realistically, doing literally anything is probably going to be better than what riot claims is possible. I think a fundamental part of the problem is stuff outside the control of the game, the OS already has segmented ram for instance, it’s all supposed to be virtually privatized, that way you don’t get these kinds of problems On the fly encryption would probably help, though they would probably just use shitty encryption anyway. Regardless, if you get something to hook into the game code itself, rather than just abusing memory values, it wouldn’t matter. Because at that point it’s going to be running inside the game.

db2 ,

You’re too edgy for me. 🙄

SurvivalMariner ,

It’s a double edged sword. The channels are bridged across to Matrix, and the poll ran in multiple places, but 90%+ of the player community are on Discord.

Shadowedcross ,

I’ll never understand why certain people don’t like this message. I use Discord every day, and have been for years, but I still hate it. Other than the fact they collect so much data and does god knows what with it, I despise the fact that SO many communities rely on it for things like support, instead of using publicly accessible websites and forums. I don’t want to go through my list of servers to find one to leave so I can join yours just to find the answer to a simple question, or to be involved in the decision making process.

ObviouslyNotBanana ,
@ObviouslyNotBanana@lemmy.world avatar

I use it too when I need to talk to people. It’s a good tool, but it is absolutely nothing else positive. I would love a better tool to come and replace it.

Why people have decided to keep information I used to be able to freely search for there is unfathomable to me.

A_Random_Idiot ,

are you me? Cause I was confused as fuck cause i could not remember making this post.

Cause I’ve been saying the same exact shit.

Discord is fine for friday night fuckaround with your gaming friends.

it is not a repository of information, and shouldnt be treated as such, because it can not be indexed and archived… So the overwhelming bulk of people that need that information will never find it, and that information will be lost when the discord disappears.

same reason it shouldnt be used as a support system.

Or anything else.

smileyhead , in MineClone 2 will switch to a new name, VoxeLibre

Personal opinion. VoxeLibre should be the name of MineTest, because MineTest seems like it was a temporary name for experimental ‘learn a programming language’ project. And MineClone is exaclly what this is so maybe not best for advertisement but it fits.

WeLoveCastingSpellz ,

oh I rhpught that was the case! yea definetly it would make way more sense for minetest to become voxel libre

AncientMariner ,

VoxeLibre has intended to not be Minecraft clone for a long time now. There has been burgers in the base game for 17 months now. Unfortunately, every time someone tries to do something different, they get a hostile reception. The name is a liability, and not representative of what the project plans to be. The name change is about where the game plans to be, not where it was in the past. MineClone2 is a dreadful name. It’s like calling it rubbish MC rip-off 2.

merthyr1831 ,

Im fine with the name change here, but also agree that MineTest is a bit of a lame name for what is pretty much a game engine.

cetvrti_magi , in How to Install and Play Epic Games on a Steam Deck
@cetvrti_magi@lemmy.world avatar

You can use Heroic game launcher for Epic games and few other launchers. There is no way to use official launcher as far as I know.

Telorand ,

You would have to install via Wine, and that’s what some people do, iirc. All of your games would be installed in that prefix, rather than their own. I think one of the benefits is more reliable cloud saves, though I haven’t personally done that or had problems with Heroic.

naticus ,

Lol yeah I don’t think OP knows what penultimate means.

ProdigalFrog OP ,

It may have been the ultimate list 4 years ago, but I haven’t updated it in so long I would’ve been embarrassed to call it the ultimate now :p

southsamurai ,
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

Well, if you only plan to do one more, this could actually be the penultimate list. But if this is the last one, then the previous one would have been penultimate.

Mind you, I’m 100% okay with using penultimate to mean second best, instead of the actual definition as next to last. It makes sense as a non standard/slang usage, since the last is often the best (depending on the list, of course, but most save the best for last). It’s a good play on the way we use ultimate as both final/last as well as best.

One of these days, the dictionaries will catch up to this usage and it’ll become a standard usage, so you’re getting in on the penultimate use of penultimate as slang, in a way :)

classic ,

I like where you went with your take. We collectively could probably stand to be more flexible like that

southsamurai ,
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

I feel that :)

A living language is going to shift. It’s inevitable. It’s necessary to hold a formal version of a language for important things for sure, but for every day conversation, pedantry is just silly. Not only can we never expect everyone to know every word and every usage of every word, mistakes happen. It’s a very human thing to pick up a word and never run across a formal definition for it, and that’s okay.

It’s easy enough to offer a formal definition if there’s a misunderstanding, to get everyone on the same wavelength. But if everyone gets the intended gist, why get all het up? Communication should be fun and engaging, not a battle over semantics and usage.

ProdigalFrog OP , (edited )

Mind you, I’m 100% okay with using penultimate to mean second best,

That was my intended use of the word, but I’m not ashamed to admit that I fully misread the little info blurb in my search engine, which led me to believe I was using it appropriately 😅

https://slrpnk.net/pictrs/image/c68884d7-90e4-49f6-99fb-bd1c3b8f3035.webp

I thought it said: a formal or literary way of saying it is not a superlative or beyond ultimate, as many people think.

…I didn’t notice the period after ‘it’ (or the double ‘it’). But the sentence right after that one is really the pièce de résistance! 🤌

But I very much appreciate your charitable view on my fumble.

southsamurai ,
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

Well hell, that’s just as cool as using a word in a fun way. You looked it up and just got steered wrong by difficult typesetting. My dyslexic ass would have gotten the same impression as you if I had to scan that on my own and come out with a definition.

dinckelman , in Using Proton 8+ with GTX 1xxx series GPUs

We’ll need more information from you.

What is the problem? Which nvidia driver revision are you running? Which one of the games? What desktop environment, or window manager?

muhyb OP ,

Thank you for the reply!

The problem is, when I try to run anything with Proton 8+, it immediately bottlenecks the GPU and everything kinda freezes because of it. Trying to change workspace and closing the game takes time, but at least it’s not impossible.

By the way, Proton 8 was fine until driver version 535 (or 530, memories getting fuzzy).

It’s independent from distro, DE or WM, and happens with every game. However, I’m on EndeavourOS, using bspwm, the game I currently try is 100% Orange Juice (it works fine, it just cannot connect to Steam after some update and apparently it works fine with Proton 8), and my driver revision is 550.67 but it’s been like this for some time.

Also tried LMDE with Cinnamon so it’s definitely Nvidia. Someone said NVK doesn’t have problems like that but I don’t want go that route yet because I can play almost everything with Proton 7.

ProdigalFrog OP , (edited )

Though I mention the monetary aspect, it doesn’t mean I’m not fully aware of and advocate for the FOSS philosophy. I would’ve thought going to the extra effort of finding out what software license each and every title used, along with a direct link to the source code (which in some cases was not trivial to find) would’ve made that much obvious.

rah , (edited )

I would’ve thought … would’ve made that much obvious.

Using the word “free” to refer to proprietary games in a GNU/Linux context is a huge indicator of a lack of awareness. I wouldn’t look further.

ProdigalFrog OP , (edited )

Using the word “free” to refer to proprietary games in a GNU/Linux context is a huge indicator of a lack of awareness.

If I’d intended to create a FOSS only list, I would’ve just said FOSS instead of free. I think it’s a little much to expect people to always qualify ‘Free as in beer’ anytime they ever use the word free in a monetary sense in a Linux community. The information needed to determine if a game is FOSS was provided next to each title, it’s not like you’ve been deceived. This was just a little list I put together in hopes to give people who are struggling financially (as many of us are these days) to have more options for fun games they can play with their friends or by themselves, I’m sorry it didn’t meet your standards. 🫤

FYI, the page you linked to isn’t publicly accessible.

I was able to add the list in the body of the lemmy post, the link is no longer required, but unfortunately it’s not federating my action of having removed the post link.

rah , (edited )

I think it’s a little much to expect people to always qualify ‘Free as in beer’ anytime they ever use the word free in a monetary sense in a Linux community.

That seems really odd to me. I don’t expect people to qualify use of the word free in a montery sense in a Linux community, I expect people to avoid using the word free in a monetary sense entirely. And it doesn’t seem a little much, it seems blindingly obvious if one’s goal is to communicate effectively.

daddy32 , in The penultimate list of Free Linux games, with over 100 titles!

Good list. Covering many different categories. Have found every game I thought of. I like that the roguelikes listed are the actual, “classic” roguelikes. What I don’t like: inclusion of the games that cost money to play (via in-game purchases). These should be at least marked as such, pretending they are free is not OK.

ProdigalFrog OP , (edited )

Back when I created this list, I had the mindset that if I did include a game with the a Free to Play monetary model, it would only be eligible if it was absolutely not Pay to Win, and if it was possible to have a lot of fun without and be on a fully equal playing field spending a dime.

Looking over the list again, I think you’re right in that a couple titles (runescape, eledivin, and argueably EVE online) really don’t meet that criteria.

However, I think others such as CS:GO, TF2, and War Thunder still deserve a spot on the list, as you’re still experiencing the full game with no disadvantage without spending anything.

But I will remove those titles and put Free To Play in the description of the others.

SSUPII , in Using Proton 8+ with GTX 1xxx series GPUs

I have no issues with Proton 8 on Nvidia GTX 1050 Mobile. Please be more specific with your info

muhyb OP ,

Thank you for the reply!

I just wrote the details here: programming.dev/comment/9284416

What is your driver version, you might be the first person I met who doesn’t have problems. If your driver is older than 535, that’s normal though.

I have 1660Ti and same things happens with 1060 on a different PC. Doesn’t happen with 470 series driver for example.

Atemu ,
@Atemu@lemmy.ml avatar

Note that 1660 ti and 1060 are from an entirely different generation of product; one is Turing the other Pascal.

muhyb OP , (edited )

I know but I read somewhere that it could be related to Nvidia’s Vulkan 1.3 implementation in their driver. It was fine when the version was 1.2. Generally cards without ray-tracing but somehow some of the older cards are fine apparently.
