million , in Gnome 46 getting VRR
@million@lemmy.world avatar

While I am enjoying my time with KDE I’ve always been more at home in Gnome. Hoping promotion of this from experimental to mainstream and HDR support are fast follows. I’d love to have another viable DE for gaming.

Rustmilian , in Gnome 46 getting VRR

Gnome HDR when?

Keegen , in Gnome 46 getting VRR

Gnome just returned as a viable desktop environment option for me! I switched to KDE precisely because of it’s Wayland VRR support, and I’m quite happy with it, but it’s nice to know I can come back to Gnome if I ever want to in the future and not miss out on a crucial feature of my monitor.

just_another_person , in Can we make something like the apple vision pro for linux fans?

There have been wearable displays on the market for many years. Plenty work with Linux just fine. As far as all the camera motion tracking junk, it’s a gimmick without a real use-case being sold by Apple. It’s literally half the cost of the unit. I don’t know many companies who would rather include that versus keeping units cheaper.

haui_lemmy OP ,

Thanks for mentioning it. I didn’t know they were linux compatible.

The thing that got me was the app store with (somewhat) vr apps. Linux has this so I figured that would work well. The AR aspect probably makes it a bit more fancy I guess.

Closest thing I know of would be SimulaVR.

Thats very awesome! Thanks for mentioning!

dustyData , in 5 years later Valve finally gives Windows compatibility tool Proton a logo

Shows you where Valve’s values are. Make it work and be functional first. Think about making it pretty later. I rather like it.

kuberoot ,

Eh, as much as I like Valve and Steam, there’s still many issues long after the UI revamp, focused on making steam prettier.

okamiueru , (edited )

Is your argument that as long as you cannot fix everything, then it’s shit? Or… not worth praise. Help yourself out here.

jonion ,
@jonion@lemmy.world avatar

I love what Valve have done for GNU/Linux, but you have to admit that the Steam software itself is a bit of a janky mess.

okamiueru ,

Aha. Yes. It has room for improvement for sure. You should just say that instead.

yuriy ,

I mean, the original point stands as written though. The ENTIRE friends/overlay revamp served no purpose other than looking prettier, and it’s still broken for a lot of setups. When I try to chat from overlay, it minimizes my game and opens a desktop chat window EVERY TIME. For a lot of games the overlay just doesn’t work at all. And that’s not even getting into the issues with the main interface. There’s a LOT of room for improvement.

kuberoot ,

The person I was replying to said that valve prioritizes making things work before making them pretty.

I was giving a major example of valve making something broken in terms of functionality but pretty, to replace something that was less pretty but functional.

It is usable, and to me it’s fine, but I just think it’s not valid praise to give to valve in general.

Awesome news. I plan to make the full switch to Linux next week. League of Legends is the only reason I use Windows. Next week, they are adding Vanguard, and that’ll make it impossible to play on Windows.

onlinepersona ,

Hold on, League of Legends is going to be impossible to play on Windows?

CC BY-NC-SA 4.0

Neon_Shadow ,
@Neon_Shadow@lemmy.world avatar

Not really. It depends on how much you value privacy. Vanguard is a kernel level anti-cheat. I refuse to give anyone unlimited access to my computer. As such, I’m quitting the game and Windows.

onlinepersona ,

Very principled. I applaud that 👏

LETS FUCKING GOOO

As a sidenote, I bought a whole new SSD and I plan to switch from windows 10 to ubuntu (yeah I know) when I have more stability in my life. At the moment I don’t want more changes in my life because I have a lot going, but it’s coming

kinther ,
@kinther@lemmy.world avatar

The haters will tell you Ubuntu sucks. Every distro has pros and cons. Use whatever you feel comfortable with, and if you feel like trying something else, do it!

citrusface ,

I recommend pop_os! My life is so much better after abandoning Windows for pop_os.

discount_door_garlic ,

ignore anybody giving you grief about whatever distro you use - people need to realise that gatekeeping an OS over minor UI experiences is a dumb fight that discourages normal users getting involved. Whether ubuntu is your gateway into other linux, or the system you end up using for 10 years - you do you, whatever is working is fine. In any case, ubuntu today is much better than it was even 5 years ago - like the comments on this thread say, things just work. You’ll still probably have to use terminal more than you should, but linux is becoming very usable for everybody.

gunpachi ,

Ubuntu is great, but please consider linux mint and PoP_OS too. You may find them more appealing than ubuntu.

Both are ubuntu based anyway, so you wont be missing anything good.

KneeTitts ,
@KneeTitts@lemmy.world avatar

try mint, install gnome if you have to

Gakomi , in Linux hits 4% on the desktop 🐧📈

Wtf is unknown? What, are they implying that people made their own OS? If the unknown is due to those pc not reporting what OS they have, well that’s most definitely Linux because Windows user tend to not care that much about privacy and Apple people tend to kiss Apple ass no matter what so they will not try to ofuscat their OS for privacy as for them having an mac or whatever is something they want to show off!

torvusbogpod ,

Unknown is TempleOS

gingernate ,

The number of people I know in real life who use temple OS and Linux are the same … 0. So it definitely could be true!
