Ran like shit for me at launch. Maybe I should give it another try now.

arefx ,

It’s been running like a dream for a long time I can only imagine it runs impeccably

sic_semper_tyrannis , in Xbox controller driver needs to be reinstalled constantly

I don’t know the answer to your question however if you can’t figure it out, I use a Guilikit King Kong Pro 2 which doesn’t require drivers and it works flawlessly on Mint (I assume any distro too)

dustyData ,

I mean, it looks like a sick controller, but I can’t help but laugh at the Engrish on their webpage. “It’s different a lot”.

Cralder OP ,

Sure, maybe for next time I buy a controller, but for now this is the one I have. Not looking to spend any more money on controllers right now

AlecStewart1st , (edited ) in Compat report Starfield

Hate to jump in 4-5 days after you posting, but what are your Steam launch options?

I see on ProtonDB a lot of people are having to fidget with some Vulkan settings, and I myself can’t even get the game to launch as I get the “Graphics card does not meet minimum requirement” message when I have a RX 6700XT. Granted I’m not running the game through Steam and I’m trying to play via Lutris with wine-ge. If you’re wondering how I’m “not running the game through Steam”, let’s just say the waves were rough last night and creating a lot of torrents.

One thing I tried was editing the current build of Windows to be 11 and not 10, but that doesn’t seem to work. Looking at the ProtonDB page, there’s these following environment variables people here can try adding to their launch options (though don’t add all of them):

<span style="color:#323232;">ENABLE_VKBASALT=1
</span><span style="color:#323232;">AMD_VULKAN_ICD=RADV
</span><span style="color:#323232;">PROTON_HIDE_NVIDIA_GPU=0 PROTON_ENABLE_NAVPI=1 # note the user who supplied this said they had to downgrade their NVIDIA drivers to 525.x
</span><span style="color:#323232;">VKD3D_CONFIG=force_compute_root_parameters_push_ubo # the user who supplied this said nothing worked for them
</span><span style="color:#323232;">DISABLE_LAYER_AMD_SWITCHABLE_GRAPHICS_1=1 VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/radeon_icd.i686.json:/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/radeon_icd.x86_64.json # if you have an AMD GPU
</span><span style="color:#323232;">DXVK_CONFIG_PATH=/home/niko/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/common/Starfield/dxvk.conf
</span>

EDIT: It seems like the following options get rid of the “minimum requirements” message, however now I get “your graphics drivers are out of date.”

<span style="color:#323232;"># Launch options if you're running the game in Steam
</span><span style="color:#323232;">DXVK_ASYNC=1 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR=1 WINE_FULLSCREEN_FSR_STRENGTH=1 AMD_VULKAN_ICD=RADV VK_ICD_FILENAMES=/usr/share/vulkan/icd.d/radeon_icd.x86_64.json gamemoderun %command% --skip-launcher
</span>

This is with wine-ge-proton8-14, don’t know if GE-Proton8-14 would make a difference.

bitwolf OP , (edited )

Hey, I didn’t have to do anything special.

I installed the game and launched it, it defaulted to Proton Experimental for this which got an update the same day.

Which OS are you on? Fedora tends to get mesa updates very quickly so your issues may be resolved in a newer mesa version.

Does steam add any flags by default? If you know how to get them I can share those.

AlecStewart1st ,

I’m on Gentoo and I built a new version of Mesa just yesterday.

I’m not running the game in Steam, I’m trying to run it from Lutris with wine-ge, as I did not get the game via Steam.

Well on the flip side I’m getting better performance on my PC. Running a vega56 and a 3600x, I’m getting roughly a 10-25fps increase.

    Molecular0079 OP ,

    Are you using DX11?

    Defaced ,

Shouldn’t be, should be using vulkan, I always use vulkan when I can. Pretty sure I’m forcing it through launch variables in steam.

Try to use the flatpak version of Steam to see if its some library that has been updated what’s causing TF2 to not launch.

It happened to me with CSGO and haven’t found a fix for it yet so I have two versions of Steam now.

    atmur ,

This is one thing I really like about Flatpak, never having to worry about missing or broken dependencies. Totally worth the bigger install size imo.

One thing to note if you go this route OP: If you use Steam Input, you’ll also need to install the steam-devices package (game-devices-udev on Arch), or setup udev rules manually. Flatpak still doesn’t let apps do this automatically as far as I’m aware, but it’s smooth sailing aside from that.

Makhra , in Itch.io games in Heroic games launcher?

Not exactly what you are looking for, but lutris does support itch.io. The way it is implemented, it won’t list the bundle contents, but only games that have been added to your collection from the bundles, to avoid cluttering your interface / hide other games you purchased.

    MartinXYZ OP ,

Cool. I’ll look into this. I haven’t used Lutris much, since Heroic has been launching most of my non-Steam games just fine.

    Makhra ,

Yeah, I guess whichever launcher makes the most sense really depends on which storefront you tend to use most.

I mostly use gog, itch and humble bundle, which lutris handles nicely. On the other hand, it isn’t as streamlined as heroic for other stores, you need to install the egs launcher for lutris to run games from that platform, as an example.

li10 , in Google, Netflix, Apple and Amazon are the "barbarians at the gate" of the games industry, says ex-Sony boss

Amazon’s the only one I think could make a dent if they got serious about breaking into the gaming market.

Netflix can’t even make decent shows anymore, Apple would be too expensive or mobile focused, and Google can’t commit to anything.

    tchotchony ,

Serious AA titles, no. But apps? I can see that happen quite easily.

    Ethalis ,

Amazon already got serious several years ago, invested tons of money in their dev studios, bought huge licences, recruited talented people and still mostly failed to this day. I remember reading an article about Amazon’s very hierarchical corporate structure that killed any attempt at the creativity needed to make a successful game but I can’t seem to find it

I don’t believe for a second that any of these big tech companies have a chance of making a significant dent in the videogame market, it’s just too far from their own expertise

    li10 ,

Yeah, would make sense that Amazon’s “disposable” approach to employees would fuck them over with something like this.

    Ertebolle ,

Apple's managed to become a credible player in the TV space in a few short years by, essentially, hiring some competent veteran executives to run the thing and throwing buckets of money at it; I think any sufficiently motivated big tech company could do the same thing with games.

    @Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social avatar

IMHO, AppleTV is the new HBO.

I want them to give Taika Watiti a billion dollars and tell him to make a Master & Commander series.

    Earthwormjim91 ,

Apple Arcade is already a solid little gaming platform. My kids love it.

They may jump more into bigger titles as the AppleTV boxes get a little beefier, but right now being able to just connect a PlayStation or Xbox controller to it and play some fun little games is a nice perk

    nitefox ,

What good show did Apple produce?

    mrnotoriousman ,

Silo is incredible, as is Severance. Ted Lasso is great. I'm really enjoying Foundation. For All Mankind was a great season 1 but I haven't caught up on it. That's just off the top of my head. I ditched Netflix and D+ and only pay for AppleTV now.

    nitefox ,

Yeah, Netflix is trash rn: too expensive and the OC are garbage.

About the foundation, I love the book serie so I will watch it today!

    emax_gomax ,

Pretty much all of them. Their track record is amazing. Most recently foundation IMO which is in its second season atm.

    redcalcium ,

Netflix can just throw money to attract game devs. They use this strategy for their mobile games and the games are actually pretty good, way better than the usual microtransaction-laden mobile games.

    EnglishMobster ,

I'm a AAA game dev and a number of former co-workers are at Netflix nowadays. Like, a suspiciously high number.

Google forgot why they were there at the gate, and started making yet another messaging platform

    BitSound ,

Yeah, I’d be worried about Apple if they ever got serious about gaming other than mobile games. Netflix and Amazon are medium concerns, though there’s a good chance they’d go for mobile games for any sort of gaming push. Google just lost any trust they ever might’ve had with game developers by killing off Stadia.

    Kerrigor ,
    @Kerrigor@kbin.social avatar

Yeah, the mess Google made of Stadia pretty much guarantees that, even if they try to get into the games industry again, nobody will have any trust or goodwill towards them.

guylacaptivite , in The DualSense game controller just went on sale

As a ps5 owner, I strongly suggest otherwise solely based on durability. All four of my dualsense controller have BOTH sticks drift to a point they are unuseable. Very cool concept but extremely unreliable. There has to be a better option, forget all of the features these are bad.

    Weylandyuta ,

The dual sense is a great controller, but you’re right. It is not immune to stick drift. Have you considered replacing your sticks with hall effect sticks? When my current black one starts to drift, I’ll probably just replace my sticks and maybe drop a new battery in it. Otherwise, it’s been my favorite controller.

    dudewitbow ,

Dualsense controllers currently dont have any solderable hall effect sensor sticks yet. DS4 very recently (i think likr a month or two ago) had just received theirs.

    Weylandyuta ,

Yep, I was looking into it earlier. I got ahead of myself.

    garretble ,
    @garretble@lemmy.world avatar

Counterpoint: I’m using my original PS5 controller right now and have had no drift in nearly three years.

Not saying it doesn’t happen, but I also don’t think the controllers are fragile.

    OverfedRaccoon ,
    @OverfedRaccoon@lemmy.world avatar

As an Xbox owner since the OG in the early 2000s, I’d almost suggest against an Xbox One / Series controller too. I know the Xbox One is fairly old now, but it’s the first one I had to get a new controller for due to stick drift. Original controller that came with it has the right stick set to full sky mode, completely unusable. The replacement has right stick drift as well, only slightly to the left at the moment. Manageable, but annoying. I would almost suggest a wired 360 controller (if you can find one these days). I’m an adult gamer, only user, and not hard on controllers, but maybe I’ve just had bad luck with my controllers.

    Carter ,

First party controllers generally are leagues behind third party options these days if you ask me.

    dudewitbow ,

There are 3rd party options with hall effect sensor sticks so on paper would outlast all of the dualsense controllers.

    ono OP ,

Unfortunately, they’re only made by companies that I don’t want to support.

I’m hopeful that Hall effect sensors will be common in the next generation of controllers. In the meantime, My Sony controllers are still working well.

    priapus ,

Why do you want to support Sony over third parties?

    ono OP , (edited )

Most third parties are okay with me. I’m divesting from companies that answer to or directly support China’s government.

    ono OP , (edited )

I think all the major controllers use Alps sticks, which (sadly) are susceptible to stick drift. I wonder if you got a bad batch, though. My 5-year-old DualShock sticks are steady unless I turn the dead zones down to almost zero. And I haven’t even bothered calibrating them.

    Defaced ,

I think a certain controller model was more susceptible to stick drift than others. I think it was after the horizon forbidden West bundle where they started selling newer controller models with more reliable sticks. Both of my ps5 controllers have been dropped, thrown, played after and while eating by children and they’re still fine. I have also have a dualsense edge controller for myself though so I don’t really care what the kids do to their controllers. Grand total of 3 controllers and none of them have drift.

    WhatASave ,

I will also counter and say I have played well over a thousand hours between trackmania and rocket league at fairly high levels since 2020 when I got the controller and it is still doing great. Those games beat controllers up

    Defaced ,

I think after a certain model number they fixed most of the stick drift issues or at least made the controllers more reliable. I think it was around when the horizon forbidden West bundle came out, they had a new model number and then they released the colored versions of the controllers. I have two dualsense controllers that have been beaten to shit by children and they don’t have stick drift, one of which is a camo controller and the other is a white controller from a horizon bundle. I also have an edge controller for myself, but I bought that for the peace of mind mostly.

dingleberry , in Google, Netflix, Apple and Amazon are the "barbarians at the gate" of the games industry, says ex-Sony boss
