Just because conspiracies likely do happen on a regular basis doesn’t mean that any popular conspiracy theory has found one.

Remember, the big conspiracies like Watergate or the NSA leaks where not uncovered by conspiracy theorists. They where not uncovered by cherry-picking factoids from public government statements and “doing ones own research” aka using Google. They were uncovered by whistleblowers speaking out and journalists double-checking and following up on information they were given.

As a side note — the poor boy with this scumbag father who constantly lies to him.

My own personal conspiracy theory is that Flat Earthers, Anti-vaxxers and all the other “Facebook boomer” conspiracies are just a strategy to discredit other “more real” conspiracies: if you believe that 9/11 was an inside job you’re bundled with people that believe that Earth is a frisbee and smart people don’t want that so they keep themselves from exploring anything else.
Also aliens fucked apes and that’s how we got here.

homoludens , (edited )

Conspiracy theories are pushed by the state because it makes them seem powerful, when in reality they’re often fucking morons. ^/s?^

pH3ra , (edited )
@pH3ra@lemmy.ml avatar

I can also accept that.
(About the apes I’m immovable tho)

theshatterstone54 ,

Yeah, It’s like the theory that Gates put microchips in the vaccines. First, your phone already does the job. And second, the actual conspiracy going on is that billionaires funnel their money through charities they own, and then make donations to influence the media and scientific research in their favour.

pH3ra ,
@pH3ra@lemmy.ml avatar

Donations don’t get taxed. So if you own the charity you’re donating you get your own tax-free income

CanadaPlus ,

I mean, the caveat is that you can’t legally pull money back out of that charity. It’s got to be used for the stated charitable purposes.

I just cannot fathom how flat earthers can believe what they believe.

I like the theory that we were “planted” on Earth very long time ago by advanced beings.

If you want to know more, meet me tomorrow at the docks

Krackalot ,

That’s the fake meeting. The real one is under the docks at midnight.

mayonaise_met ,

So if I believe the earth is flat I’ll be bundled with people who believe 911 was an inside job is what you’re saying?

BestBouclettes ,

The 9/11 was an inside job stuff, but only the part where part of the US government knew that something was going to happen and let it happen. That gave them the opportunity to set up stuff like the Patriot Act and gave them a (wonky) reason to invade the middle east.

4am ,

Yeah this is as far as I’ll take that one as well, except I’ll do one further. All that “controlled demolition” stuff is to distract rubes and make them sound like crackpots so no one takes the “hey we knew and did nothing” take seriously from anyone.

mayonaise_met ,

Yeah, what was it? By the end of the day Rumpsfeld and Cheney had convinced Bush to go after Sadam Hussein and people who knew the ME were confused about that.

I don’t buy for a second that “they let it happen” though. The conspiracy is that they didn’t waste a good crisis.

BestBouclettes ,

Yeah maybe it’s some sort of confirmation bias from me, it’s my take on the conspiracy. But given all the shady shit the US government has done, I wouldn’t be surprised if they knew and let it happen. As you said they absolutely took advantage of the crisis.

radostin04 ,
@radostin04@pawb.social avatar

I’m not sure if this counts as a conspiracy, but I wholeheartedly believe that aliens are real, but that we have no way of ever contacting them or confirming their existence because they’re so damn far away

theKalash ,

Not sure that even counts as a conspiracy.

li10 ,

Yeah, surely it’s only a conspiracy if there’s proof of aliens that’s being hidden from people.

lol3droflxp ,
@lol3droflxp@kbin.social avatar

That’s actually a reasonable thing to believe, not a conspiracy. Just something nobody knows yet.

lily33 ,

Indeed not a conspiracy. A conspiracy involves a crew of conspirators conspiring to do something illegal or unethical.

If it’s just the laws of physics conspiring, it doesn’t count.

drlecompte ,

Mark Felton did a 6 episode series on YT on how the alleged burnt bodies of Hitler and Eva Braun found by the soviets, are actually plants.

Not that Hitler survived the war or anything, they were just buried elsewhere nearby, probably in a civilian mass grave, to prevent the soviets from parading the real bodies around.

    The key metric is always: how many people would have to be in on it and never say anything. The ones that are hundreds or thousands of people are obvious nonsense. If it’s just a handful of people, it’s perfectly plausible.

    luthis ,

    This is going to be my comeback the next time I get called a conspiracy theorist. Not that I am much of one or discuss them very often.

    We definitely aren’t told the whole story on 911. There’s so many wierd pieces like the dancing Israelis, the Pentagon footage, the ‘crash site’ in the field seemingly void of most of the expected debris, and tower 5 collapsing after office equipment caught fire somehow. It’s the only time in history that 3 buildings were hit by 2 planes and collapsed into their own footprint from fire damage. Tower 5 is the smoking gun, look into that one.

    The JFK assassination. Wendigoon did an excellent video (he’s quite passionate about it, he has a full on whiteboard to go through all the facts). There’s definitely more to that than we know. Crucial evidence being ‘lost’, audio of the gunshots, direction of the bullets… the person signalling with the umbrella on a sunny day…

    Just to mix things up a bit, water erosion around the sphinx. You can clearly see in old photos the water erosion from flooding. The last time that area was flooded was thousands of years before the supposed age of the sphinx. There’s also the tiny head and massive body, indicating that the head was recarved at some point. Then there’s the complete lack of hieroglyphics inside the pyramids, while everywhere else, temples, tombs, etc have hieroglyphs everywhere. Perfectly circular drilled holes in granite, scoop marks in the granite around a half carved obelisk, and the sheer weight of the obelisks themselves. I’m not saying aliens but definitely technology existed back then that we are unaware of. Probably not like modern technology but very advanced and clever cranes etc.

    darcy ,
    @darcy@sh.itjust.works avatar

    here before this gets downvoted to the bottom

    JungleJim ,

    To address the flooding but, I’ve heard the idea (nope, I don’t have a source) that some of the ancient structures along the Nile may have been built with the assistance of dug canals that would have allowed barges to move right up to the job site. That could have been. Why the sphinx had wet feet, it was built in a puddle.

    Summzashi ,

    Theres this guy on TikTok demonstrating exactly how you can move large and heavy objects like that with nothing but clever counter balancing and some well placed logs. It’s really not that hard. Honestly this all was debunked ages ago, and just the fact that you willfully ignore that makes me think you’re disingenuous about the other stuff you’re saying.

    luthis ,

    Did you not read the part where I said they had very clever cranes?

    Summzashi ,

    You literally said technology that were not aware of. We are. We know exactly how they did it.

    luthis ,

    I would argue that we know it could have been done that way. And that’s ignoring the scoop marks in the granite, the drilled holes, lack of hieroglyphics. And apart from that, ignoring the main point which is the evidence pointing to an even earlier civilisation that created the pyramids/sphinx

    state_electrician ,

    Sounds like you listen to too much Joe Rogan.

    luthis ,

    I’ve actually never listened to Joe Rogan. Is it a good podcast?

    11 Unbelievable Conspiracy Theories That Were Actually True

    …howstuffworks.com/…/11-unbelievable-conspiracy-t…

    captainlezbian ,

    I believe that the United States government operated a scheme by which they secretly armed the Nicaraguan contras in exchange for cocaine, which the cia sold in the United States and used that money to fund Iran. All against the law and without congressional approval.

    I believe that the American federal bureau of investigation kept tabs on, infiltrated, assassinated, and otherwise actively disrupted left wing causes for at least half of the latter half of the 20th century, and may continue to do so.

    I believe the cia dosed a lot of people with lsd without their consent in attempts to control minds. All without informing any higher ups or democratically elected officials.

    I believe the cia has actively worked to undermine and overthrow democratically elected left leaning governments around the world whenever that comes into conflict with the interests of American wealth holders.

    Modern ones, I have some suspicions based on leaks from somewhat trusted sources, but it’s not like historical ones where there’s such clear evidence and often confessions, which is part of why American ones are so prevalent here, we do like documenting what our government does.

    Pantherina ,

    That Covid was made.

    I dont really think its true, but the richest get richer with every catastrophe, people actually believe “everything just gets more expensive” (which is absolute bullshit and rich people just use it to make more profits). Also, genetically modifying some viruses should be totally possible today.

    sxan ,
    @sxan@midwest.social avatar

    This, I could believe. As an escaped bioweapons project (less likely), or as a flu vaccine research project gone wrong (most likely). I don’t believe it, per se - it doesn’t satisfy Occam’s Razor - but it’s within the realm of not-so-insane.

    deft ,

    I personally think it ain’t even that big but literally same. They were just studying viruses for all potential, bioweapons to vaccine research. Covid itself wasn’t made for any particular reason it was just the one that got leaked from the lab.

    China’s biggest fault was not realizing at some point on an infinite timeline there will absolutely be a leak, how do we respond? And they lied about the initial leak and infection.

    Other than that, playing with viruses what else did we expect? I don’t think any malice was attached to the leak, just as you said, stupidity and probably some arrogance.

    mayonaise_met ,

    Epidemics and plagues have been part of life forever. It’s not like we had never seen anything like this before that warrants exploring alternative explanations. We’ve never been more connected. This was predicted and it will happen again.

    Without a solid case supported by evidence we have to assume the simpler explanation.

    bionicjoey ,

    I don’t buy it because scientists have been saying for more than a decade that the “wet market” culture in China was a “ticking time bomb” for something like COVID to appear.

    Pantherina ,

    Yes that too makes sense. If people stopped eating animals, damn… the reserve antibiotics we could save for like… actually emergencies

    bionicjoey ,

    That’s not the reasoning. The reasoning is that the “Wet Markets” involve a lot of live mammals being kept in close proximity, creating a breeding ground for really nasty viruses to make the interspecies jump to humans.

    Pantherina ,

    Yes, and to circumvent this naturally occuring germ breeding pool, in countries like Germany animals get pumped up with antibiotics, even the reserve ones, so that this doesnt happen here even though its just as bad.

    Yeah, eeeeeverything fine here.

    bionicjoey ,

    Antibiotics are irrelevant to COVID. It’s a virus, not a bacteria.

    Pantherina ,

    True, is there anything animals get to stop spreading viruses? Never heard of that

    bionicjoey ,

    Not keeping them in cramped filthy conditions like those that exist in Chinese meat markets. Particularly small mammals which are genetically similar enough to humans for a virus to jump species. There’s a reason all the nastiest plagues have come from people trying to eat bats and monkeys.

    Pantherina ,

    Factory farming suffering animals, especially chicken live under exactly those conditions, just that we dont see them

    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoonosis

    Bats are not genetically similar to us, but the same as birds they can carry diseases over distance.

    Lots of diseases came from “regular western farm animals”

    Living in emulation. I believe calling it simulation wouldn’t be correct, we’d be more like a video game. If there was somehow a computer powerful enough to actually emulate real world, we wouldn’t be able to tell if we’re in it. And we’d still be real regardless, just on a computer.

    manned_meatball ,
    @manned_meatball@lemmy.ml avatar

    Without knowing the “higher” reality, I’d still call it a simulation. An emulator is capable of replacing the “real” system it’s emulating. Maybe that’s your view on the topic, but I find it more likely the higher reality is more complex than ours because it contains ours. Therefore our reality could not be an emulation. Lots of speculation though.
