jewbacca117 , in Google Play Store requesting location permission to show 'local recommendations'

Google has our location data anyways, not sure what the difference here is.

rikudou ,

Under GDPR they can’t use it, unless you give them consent. They obviously do, but they can’t be too obvious, otherwise they’d have to pay huge fines again.

Owljfien ,

Yeah its a pain now often “can’t do x” actually means “can’t be caught doing x”. Even getting caught sometimes doesn’t mean much

Apple’s App Store has included this “feature” for several years. Gross.

jadedwench ,

I deny it every single time it asks. I wish it would take the hint and stop asking. I have an iPad and a Pixel and both app stores are complete cancer. I only open Google Play a couple times a year, but I am usually opening the Apple one to force everything to update.

flop_leash_973 , in eSim or Physical Sim?

I moved to esim for everything since my carrier (US Mobile) supports it and has a nice utility built into their mobile app to allow you to move your number to a new esim anytime you want to switch phones.

Boeddabart , in Notification access for sideloaded apps

Go to settings -> apps -> the app you want the restriction gone -> the 3 dots top right

I think you can turn it off there. It is an extra security layer design by Google, because without that restriction and with the access turned on, the app can see pretty much all your touches and swipes, notifications and whatnot throughout the system etc. Edit: spelling

kirk781 OP ,
@kirk781@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Ah yes, now I see where to toggle the setting from. I was just seeing the message Restricted setting and was searching for a toggle there, in the wrong place. Thanks.

limecool , in Google Authenticator finally gets Material You redesign, search, & more

You are better off using an open source app like Aegis, KeepassDX, among others.

weststadtgesicht , in Nova Launcher faces uncertain future after the company Branch slashes its development team

Sadly this comes as no (big) surprise. Sharing the fate with many great projects from small dev teams, Nova was dead the moment it was bought up.

dabu ,
@dabu@lemmy.world avatar

They always buy the brand or patents and that’s all.

Carighan ,
@Carighan@lemmy.world avatar

Hey, when it happened everyone was sure they’ll develop it into an ad platform. Guess that didn’t happen

cyberpunk007 ,

I’m still running it, is there a decent alternative yet? Or even a good Foss one?

Tyler ,

I was wondering why it’s always freezes on my home screen the last several months.

cyberpunk007 ,

Ah this happens to me occasionally as well. It went away for a long time. If memory serves its if I open an app and go back to the home screen too quickly or something. Usually I just lock and unlock my screen to fix it.

I really like Niagara, though it is quite a bit different from Nova.

Lawnchair V2 is also a thing outside of the Playstore.

PiJiNWiNg ,

Niagra is also where ive landed. Took considerable time before i felt used to it, but its been solid so far.

folekaule , in Nova Launcher faces uncertain future after the company Branch slashes its development team

What are some good alternatives if it gets shut down? Preferably FOSS.

joat_mon ,

I’ve tried quite a few after leaving Nova a few years ago and have settled on Lawnchair. It seems to be the most stable and is under active development.

Creat ,

is under active development.

The latest release is from 2018 though? So they just refuse to call something “stable” and everyone has to pick between nightly and beta or something?

joat_mon ,

Yeah, just use the Beta, it’s extremely stable. Don’t get it from the Play Store though, as you’ve seen it hasn’t been updated in years. Just get it from their GitHub.

flop_leash_973 ,

I’ve been using KISS launcher off and on since Branch bought Nova. Not nearly as flexible when it comes to customization. But if you just want a simple launcher that supports stuff like custom icon packs it is a good one.

ToaofTime ,

I’ve been using Neo Launcher since nova was bought, its def doesn’t have feature parity but it had everything I personally used from nova.

Fisch ,
@Fisch@discuss.tchncs.de avatar

Two best ones IMO are Lawnchair and Kvaesitso. I use the latter. Lawnchair works more like any normal launcher while Kvaesitso is more unique in the way it works.

resonate6279 ,

I also use neo launcher

Zangoose , in Google Authenticator finally gets Material You redesign, search, & more

Ok I get that open source alternatives are better than Google’s proprietary stuff but why are y’all downvoting someone for posting a relevant news article and then not leaving any actual comments about it? Even if the app sucks this kind of seems like shooting the messenger when there could’ve been an actual discussion here.

b000rg , (edited ) in End of an era: Nova Launcher's parent company lays off practically everyone

PSA: Nova Launcher’s owning company sells their user data. It was a good launcher when it first came out, but it’s been nothing but a downward spiral from there.

Edit for clarity: I don’t mean the app itself. It is owned by an entity that exists to sell consumer data.

dual_sport_dork ,
@dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world avatar

I’ve been using Nova for ages, probably back from the KitKat days on a Samsung phone running Touchwiz, i.e. when everything from the vendor side was crap.

I just switched back to my Moto G5’s stock launcher. Honestly, it already does everything I did with Nova. It supports theming, adaptive icons, you can configure the density of its grid, etc. So I uninstalled Nova. Fuck it.

Realistically I think most stock launchers are probably perfectly adequate for everything normal users want to do these days.

Paradachshund ,

I had the same experience when I recently had to get a new phone. Stock launchers have improved a lot.

Flax_vert ,

I used to use Total launcher to make the most convoluted home screen possible that literally nobody but me knew how to use. Like several circles you swiped on in different directions to open folders, absolutely no labels, etc. Now I just use the stock pixel one lol

Frog ,

I miss swiping on icons. I used it for opening folders. Like Firefox would have all my most used browsers like Chromium Firefox Focus, and Firefox Nightly. My Messages app would have all my messaging apps. Camera had Photos, and photo editing apps. I barely had to go to the drawer.

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

Likewise. I use Total, and I have 12 folders on my homescreen, each of which can be swiped up, down, left or right to open specific apps or run specific actions. So, 48 options without ever leaving the home screen :-)

I very rarely have to even open a folder, let alone the app drawer (in fact Total doesn’t really even seem to have a built in app drawer, although it exists somewhere in the background)

sanguinepar ,
@sanguinepar@lemmy.world avatar

But, but, they assured us that that wasn’t going to happen? You mean they lied??

JFC, what a fall from grace for Nova. Sad to see.

obinice ,
@obinice@lemmy.world avatar

I’m opted out of that in my settings, it’d be quite the scandal if they were ignoring GDPR?

b000rg ,

I’ve amended my comment to make it more clear. I didn’t mean to imply the app sends your data to third parties, only that the company who owns it profits off of third party information brokering. Where that information comes from is beside the point in my opinion.

april , in End of an era: Nova Launcher's parent company lays off practically everyone

Dammit lol that’s the one I picked to use

Maybe it will keep working unchanged for a while

lemmyvore , in End of an era: Nova Launcher's parent company lays off practically everyone

Why do you need a new launcher? You’re good to go for several years until (if) Android implements some completely new feature. Right now Nova has pretty much everything.

southsamurai ,
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

Yeah, just use an older version, don’t update, and it’ll function fine for a while.

Frog , in End of an era: Nova Launcher's parent company lays off practically everyone

I used Nova for years. When they got bought out I switched to a bunch of different launchers. My favorite turned out to be Kvaesitso.

It was weird for me at first because having apps on the main screen was something I’ve grown acustomed to. You can have a row if you want though. There is an option. After using it for a few weeks, I realized their layout works best for me.

Let me know if there are other launchers you recommend. I appreciate it.

jol ,

I tried to like Kvaezitso, and I loved some of the features, but it’s too strict in others that I didn’t like. I want Lawnchair and Kvaezitso to make love and have a perfect baby.

    Nova in its heyday was just exceptional. It’s so sad to see it brought almost to its knees.
