bstix , to technology in Limitless ‘white’ hydrogen under our feet may soon shatter all energy assumptions

Hydrogen is going to be abused to white wash fossils, no doubt. It will also keep consumers dependent on gas station distribution. Certain types of companies like both of these things very much.

I don’t believe the prices presented in the article. P2X will eventually be able to produce much cheaper green hydrogen than the costs of drilling for white hydrogen. There really isn’t a limit to how cheap it can get.

White hydrogen is fine to replace the production of gray hydrogen right now, but I doubt it will continue to be the cheapest method in just a few years.

theodewere , to mensliberation in Why men lose all their friends in midlife
    @theodewere@kbin.social avatar

i think it's really simple.. we don't gather in order to accomplish things together.. not in the real world, solving real problems.. men become friends when they solve problems and build things together.. think barn building among the Amish.. and we basically can only drop the competitive thing if we're trying to work together, but then we get right to work.. and that's our normal socialization.. when we see one another, we immediately like to reminisce about something we fixed or conquered together.. back in my grandfather's day, they spent free time at the men's social club, to brag about exactly that and drink and play cards all evening.. we haven't figured out how to replace that stuff.. so we're all just adversaries all the time, learning how to get better at combat and shit..

    ZC3rr0r ,

I can both attest that this works, and that it sucks when you move and there aren’t any around you anymore.

    Khotetsu ,

I think part of this is a result of toxic masculinity issues. I remember reading a comment by a trans man on how his friendships had changed after he transitioned, and while part of it was how his friendships changed with women he had been friends with before he even transitioned, he also talked about how his friendships with men were missing a major part that had made his friendships with women before he transitioned so deep - and that was emotional vulnerability. Similar to what you’re saying, he found that it generally isn’t socially acceptable for men to form true, emotional connections with other men outside of scenarios that emulate life or death situations. Things like hunting, or sports that were originally created to keep soldiers fit outside of war are acceptable situations for men to build that camaraderie. Outside of these kinds of scenarios though, men aren’t allowed to be emotionally vulnerable with each other and make true friendships that go beyond a surface level, leaving them emotionally isolated and stunting their emotional growth and well-being. He also theorized that this is probably why men mistake women being friendly as them being flirtatious since women have that deep emotional connection in all their friendships, while men are only really allowed it with romantic partners, but that’s outside the scope of this conversation.

    ReakDuck ,

For europe, yes, for America, Ukraine, Russia and more. Not at all.

    …wikipedia.org/…/Convention_on_Cluster_Munitions

But what was banned was the use of incendiary devices. Which russia used against a city with civilians.

    en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Incendiary_device

    tenochtitlan ,

I’ve searched through a few of the countries that didn’t sign the convention and they either manufacture or have bought large stocks of cluster bombs (India, Argentina, US, and Brazil). The trend seems self evident.

I still don’t get why we are trying to justify unloading our backlog of dangerous cluster bombs onto Ukraine soil. Blood is on the hands of the lobbyists that wanted to clear out the warehouses full of cluster bombs. We can make more munitions that we have been sending, which will be less of a hazard to Ukrainian farmers.

    Zavala ,

Of the many reasons, one is that they are highly effective at killing entreched infantry, which is the majority of the entire frontline. Artillary rounds that explode on impact or fragment in the air are safer for whoever inherits the land, but it take many more times the amount of those rounds to accomplish the same saturation as cluster munitions. This is a sad fact.
You’re right though, if Russian farmers get the land they will be bothered by both sides cluster bomblets, probably killed. Ukrainian farmers might be happy to have the land at all.

    tenochtitlan , (edited )

Ukrainian farmers will be happy to have land that will kill them? This self gas lighting is insane. How about taking off a billion off the lend lease debt everytime a Ukranian dies from unexploded cluster bombs then?

juicy , to world in Milei is already proving the Left-wing economic establishment wrong

The guy sucks, but the previous left administration drove the economy into the ground. Poverty rose from around 45% to around 55%, and inflation went from around 25% to 288%.

We on the left need to be economically savvy. That doesn’t mean we can’t be radical. For example: A hundred different means-tested, bureaucratic welfare programs is progressive but inefficient and demeaning. A universal livable basic income is radical, liberating, and economically savvy. Rent control is another example of a popular leftist policy that is economically irrational. The goal of universal affordable housing is admirable, but the method is madness. It’s unfortunate that the left abhors anti-intellectualism everywhere except in economics.

This is not to say that we need to embrace neoliberal corporatist bullshit like charter schools, universal privatization, gutting regulatory agencies, etc, etc. It’s just recognizing that radical goals will not be achieved by ignoring hardwon economic knowledge, but by employing economic principles for the benefit of the poor instead of the wealthy.

most of the aid is rerouted to militants and the leftovers are mostly sold to civilians at exorbitant prices, while the hostages get crumbs.
not giving aid and attacking militant hotspots quicker could’ve ended the situation sooner and would’ve enabled direct giving of aid to civilians. in addition to securing the hostages sooner.

Altofaltception , to world in German property prices plummet as housing bubble bursts

Is it just a result of rising interest rates? Or was there another catalyst, not covered by the article? Did the supply of housing increase? What are the current rates of immigration?

    aelwero ,

My opinion is that it’s investors.

Plenty of people out there buy houses for cash, spruce them up, and sell them for profit to extract some of the equity inherent in real property. Over time, they collectively push up the perceived value by force, and occasionally, the people who are the ultimate source of that equity, the ones looking to buy a permanent home, will stop buying.

There’s been a chunk of time recently, a decade or maybe more, where those permanent home seekers, the true source of the equity, haven’t been buying property. COVID exasperated the issue, because the flippers went fucking crazy for a couple years and inflated the amount of non-homes. Now they want their equity back out, but nobody who wants an actual home is looking to buy one because there isn’t enough value for them.

So prices have to come down before the actual source of equity starts buying again. The bubble has to deflate some.

Again, the entirety of this statement is simply my personal opinion, so grain of salt, but this is what pure logic and critical thinking suggests is the true mechanism :)

    gravitas_deficiency ,

The problem is that (at least in America) tons of banks and corporations are buying up HUGE swaths of housing - single family homes, condos, apartments, etc - and they’re building, or have already built, businesses models centered on permanently renting those residences. Here is an article, and here is an excerpt:

Real estate investors bought a record 18.4 percent of the homes that were sold in the United States in the fourth quarter of 2021, up from 12.6 percent a year earlier, according to the realty company Redfin.

And in some markets, especially in the relatively affordable Sun Belt metro areas, their share is far higher.

In Charlotte and Atlanta, investors purchased more than 30 percent of the homes sold in the fourth quarter of 2021, according to Redfin. In Jacksonville, Fla., Las Vegas, and Phoenix, they bought just under 30 percent.

For those in the back: two years ago, corporations bought around 30% of available homes, and particularly focused on markets where home prices were reasonable, thus further exacerbating the housing crisis and wealth disparity in the long term.

New law proposal: the only type of corporation allowed to own a house is a bank, and then only under the strictures of a mortgage held by a private individual (or, logically and necessarily, through default and foreclosure). Additionally, houses repossessed through default may not be rented, as long as the bank is the sole holder of the property.

    guyrocket ,
    @guyrocket@kbin.social avatar

I think investors figured out that the REAL money in real estate is in endless renting and not so much in flipping.

I know more than 1 person that owns several rental properties and they're getting filthy rich from monthly rent while also building equity. But I get the impression from them that they'll never sell. Buy low, then rent forever.

    SCB ,

If interest rates went up, crippling demand for new housing, this is a temporary “burst” at best. Their economy is in the trash can right now, and that means demand is artificially low.

The second their economy rebounds they’ll be back in the same situation.
