Nintendo basically sent out a press release saying “Its super easy to pirate our games!”. This is really only positive for them if no other projects show up.

blattrules , to memes in Apple

I used to push android over iOS until a few years ago when Google became just as bad as Apple, if not worse. I’ve been trying to steadily get rid of Google products that they’re probably just going to either stop supporting or discontinue altogether, or gradually reduce features that I use every day. I switched over to an iPhone because it offers better privacy and allows for ad blockers without having to root your phone. I don’t have any desire to go back even though I still think the android interface makes more sense for me. I also don’t care what color someone’s bubble is.

tsugu OP ,
@tsugu@slrpnk.net avatar

May I ask what do you mean by android not allowing ad blockers? You can set up a private DNS and set it to one that blocks ads. A very simple thing to do.

Alk ,

Yeah there are even several ways to do it if you use root.

BCsven ,

You don’t need root was their point, if you use private DNS entry

Sirence , (edited )

Can you elaborate on how to use AdBlock on iPhone? Everytime I try to look it up I can only find ad block for the web browser. Last time I was told that’s all you can do, is this outdated?

Edit: you’re not just talking about using DNS right? Since that’s just the same as android.

blattrules ,

Yeah, I just installed and paid for AdGuard pro, which blocks ads on safari. Doesn’t do anything for any Google app that I install but reading news sites is much better since I did it.

Honytawk ,

Lol, you paying for an adblocker that doesn’t even block all ads on your device?

Get on AdAway’s level.

Sirence ,

But that is so much worse then the free system wide AdBlock you can use on android without root, why do you think it is better?

BCsven ,

adguard-dns.io/en/public-dns.htmlgo here , expand the private dns, click ios, follow instructions to get a privateDNS config setup.

No need for buying an app

Sirence ,

That’s just DNS and exactly how you do it on android too, the op made it sound like he has something better that’s exclusive.

BCsven , (edited )

Yes it is pretty much the same, Android you just type the IP address, Apple you download a config. For anyone not knowing about it ( which sounds like you do) It is system wide, and not just for webpages, lookup goes through the private DNS. It is how the app version does it also, you just get a button to turn off the private DNS and use the general 8.8.8.8 or 1.1.1.1 for when you need to resolve a site, and maybe a few other functions. I forget which adblocker it was, but one was selling user data, so setting up your own DNS or pihole seems the best way.

BCsven ,

GrapheneOS is where it is at. All the configuration of Android without Googles bullshit. And if you need Google bullshit it is Sandboxed so they aren’t holding your phone hostage

What frustrates me the most about this is that if we promote one commercial solution to the top of the heap, destroying all others, we still lose.

So they’ll stop giving frequent updates to the software huh? That’ll make it easier to pirate.

Matrix and bridges

toastal ,

XMPP & Gateways

miss_brainfarts ,

Only if you tell your contacts about it, and explain to them what a bridge does

shrippen ,

Why?

miss_brainfarts , (edited )

Take Signal to Matrix for example. They use different encryption protocols, which means a message sent from one end has to be decrypted, and then re-encrypted with the protocol of the recipient before they can actually receive it.

So basically, your encryption is not very e2e anymore, and the fact that someone can set this up, effectively giving encryption keys to a third party without their contacts being able to do anything about it is pretty fucked.

Oh, and different TOS between different services also come into play.

So if you do this, at least tell your contacts about it, so they can make an informed decision about whether or not that’s okay for them.

hjpoijnerflkjn ,

Just self host the bridges. I mean if you trust your phone more than your server, this won’t help.

miss_brainfarts ,

Do whatever you want, but again, make sure your contacts can make an informed decision about it.

stegosaur5491 ,

I bet none of my contacts made an informed decision about which chat app they are using. I don’t think that this really bothers one of them. Most of them do not know, what the difference between Insta-pms and Whatsapp even is, as far as security and privacy are concerned. And from my point of view I don’t know it detailed enough too. Making an informed decision about a closed source software and as a non technical person is not as easy as you may think. At least from my point of view.

miss_brainfarts ,

You’re hitting the nail directly on the head.

Not knowing what’s going on being a bad thing is precisely my whole point

owen ,

Meh. For many people, software research is an impossibly high barrier for entry because of years of FANG brain rot.

BreakDecks ,

If I own the bridge, nobody but me is accessing the message.

fmstrat ,

Yup, this is what I do.

repungnant_canary , to memes in Chat Apps

And if you have two phone numbers which you want to use for WhatsApp then you need to clone the damn app because they can’t even make such basic functionality

LWD ,

Shelter is a nice FOSS app.

Samsungs also have Secure Folder…

CertifiedBlackGuy ,

Samsung actually allows app cloning for multiple profiles without using secure folder.

I’m not sure if it’s a list of supported apps or any as I don’t use the feature

meliaesc ,

It’s called “dual messenger” if anyone is curious. Works well for using both my US & international numbers.

LWD ,

Oh yeah, you can do that too. I just never have it for apps I want to clone.

JohnDoe ,

I have a newer Redmi Phone and I can install an app at least twice. There’s the ‘second space’ as well which is like having a cordoned off user. I use a different fingerprint or PIN and it takes me there.

I have 3/7 and I hate it. I wish signal never removed the ability to function as sms

morrowind ,
@morrowind@lemmy.ml avatar

Even if it did, it didn’t support rcs

rockSlayer ,

That’s because Google is gatekeeping the android API for RCS

CosmicTurtle ,

Wait, I thought Google wanted Apple to start supporting RCS. So that everyone can talk to each other.

So Google is just…trying to strong arm apple to give up their proprietary protocol for their own?

That’s so fucked up.

Flax_vert ,

RCS is an open standard. However, on Android you can only use it with Google chat. So android stops any other apps from using it. Nothing to stop you making your own phone from scratch and adopting it.

It’s incredibly stupid, I know.

Perfide ,

Samsung messages app also supports RCS, depending on your carrier, though? It’s super fucking buggy and frequently switches back to sms so I still switched to Google messages, but it does technically have it.

TheGrandNagus ,

They only have it because they reached a deal with Google.

zeekaran ,

4/7 here. I’m fine with it. Though sms should be included.
