Friends don’t make friends install chat apps (besides Signal)

SundryTornAsunder ,

Not sure why you were downvoted. I’ve successfully made most of my friends, and my mom for that matter, talk to me on Signal.

toastal ,

The comment implies Signal is peak chat when it’s flawed & other than maybe onboarding, isn’t superior to alternatives—with the phone number being a pro for onboarding is a con for privacy. It still requires you have an Android or iOS primary device (fueling that duopoly). They don’t want you installing it from a safer space like F-Droid. They still by default send notification metadata to Google & Apple (websocket support exists but drains a fair amount of battery & they refuse to support UnifiedPush). They still ship/use Apple emoji on Android & Linux. It’s still a centralized system you can’t self-host. They still have that missing part of the source code (where I would assume the feds planted something). It still isn’t a good space large chats. And the Electron desktop apps are far too bloated.

SundryTornAsunder ,

And the Electron desktop apps are far too bloated.

No argument. Electron is categorically silly in its own right, lol.

They don’t want you installing it from a safer space like F-Droid.

F-Droid is by no means safe; use Droidify.

They still by default send notification metadata to Google & Apple (websocket support exists but drains a fair amount of battery & they refuse to support UnifiedPush).

Easy: use the FOSS version of Molly instead of the default Signal app.

JohnDoe ,

Hi, could you touch on why F-Droid is less safe? Is it because they package (I think that’s the term?) stuff themselves?

SundryTornAsunder , (edited )

Certainly.

To answer your question: yeah, pretty much.

I got all of this information, originally, through this guy’s channel (Side Of Burritos on YouTube):

  1. www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzpVI4zaso0
  2. www.youtube.com/watch?v=lAbgeJau3eE
  3. www.youtube.com/watch?v=FFz57zNR_M0

It’s also worth mentioning that part three of that series ended up directly inspiring another project called Obtanium, which he then did a video on here:

flubba86 ,

Signal is the best, but no way I’m going to be able to get my wife, my friends, my parents and in-laws to use it.

DragonTypeWyvern ,

Have you considered emotional blackmail?

flubba86 ,

No, I haven’t reached that point yet.

Colour_me_triggered ,

Do yo need a wife, friends, parents, or in-laws?

Pixel ,

Can’t even get your wife on it? Damn…

I know I shouldn’t dunk on free software. But I have never been frustrated by a software before like I was with blender. Everything seems half developed. And I always need hacks I never knew I needed to complete the smallest of projects. Modeling tools are half finished.

Like try to snap the knife tool to the midpoint of an edge? no luck. Try to constrain the knife direction to one of the vertex directions ? No luck. Try to make the curve profile width consistent in 3d? no luck . do proper precision modeling ? Impossible . snapping in unreliable half of the time. and on and on and on .

I am very grateful for the free software and the devs hard work. I bet trying to make blender do many things at once keeps it in a state with many unfinished tools .

How do I hack the shit out of my oled switch

Fiivemacs ,

With a cleaver and buy a steam deck instead

TIMMAY ,

I wish, my pc is no longer capable of running games and I still need it for utilities and such (porn). The switch was a gift but I would probably have bought one anyway to be honest, but now I see the light

Fiivemacs ,

From the OLED, of the steam deck?

Timecircleline ,

You’re allowed a pc and a steam deck. There’s no law against both.

TIMMAY ,

Maybe I dont know how a steam deck works lol I am woefully illiterate when it comes to some tech things. My understanding was that a steam deck still needed a pc to be streaming games from to some extent, is that not the case?

jack ,

I think you’re thinking of the Steam Link.

The Steam Deck can stream games from your PC, but it is a perfectly capable standalone gaming device.

TIMMAY ,

an dumb, that’s sick, will get

SimplyATable ,

Also, the steam deck has a desktop mode that allows it to act like a PC

MrShankles ,

That is not the case. It’s a standalone device that you can play pc games on. It is very similar to the switch in design, but able to play a whole lot more. You should definitely look into it.

TIMMAY ,

ohsnap

zalgotext ,

You might be thinking of the Steam Link

Aleric ,

We will help you.

abraxas ,

One thing of note with the Steam Deck is that it CAN stream games from your PC, allowing you access to your whole library. You get access to fewer games in SteamOS (there’s still a ton). You can always look up what games are natively compatible with Steam Deck before you buy. The big ticket games are usually compatible nowadays (Starfield was markedly absent, but BG3 is there all-the-way).

ReakDuck ,

Its faster than thr OLED so no, you can install games on your Steam Deck and it is very very user friendly.

ULS ,

Get a hammer and smash the fuck out of it.

Pirky ,
@Pirky@lemmy.world avatar

Alas, the only easily hackable Switch’s were made until about a year after release. To hack modern ones requires a special mod chip that isn’t easily soldered on.
Nintendo unfortunately did a good job on hack proofing the Switch.

ReakDuck ,

But you say its still possible?

Pirky ,
@Pirky@lemmy.world avatar

I haven’t looked into the details myself since I got lucky with my used Switch. But, yeah, it should still be possible.

xenoclast ,

Yes, and with literally every other console over time it will get easier and easier

Zehzin ,
@Zehzin@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, but you need a modchip and some knowhow. Or you find a guy

daFRAKKINpope ,

You get a steamdeck.

If there’s one thing I know about the situation, a LOT of people who otherwise haven’t bothered are scrambling to download yuzu, if for any other reason to say fuck Nintendo.

It’s me, I’m people.

Scrollone ,

Me too. I’ve never cared for Switch games, I don’t even have a console, but now I’m discovering many gems on my computer.

WalrusDragonOnABike ,

Both of my roommates own a switch and I’m welcome to use them. If I’m gonna play, I’ll just use those. Still, I’m people.

ultra ,

projectsquared ,

Streisand effect for me. Never heard of this project until Nintendo caused a fuss.
