Did you know that you don’t actually have to poop every time you take a phone-break on the toilet?

Viking_Hippie ,

Why would you lie on the internet?

MyFairJulia OP ,
@MyFairJulia@lemmy.world avatar

Oh no, i take phone breaks between my shits. Usually when i’m shitting i’m figuring out solutions to the worlds problems, disproving well established theorems and stuff. However when i’m done shitting i keep forgetting the solutions so here we are.

poggerino , to lemmyshitpost in How journalist view modern gamers

I personally love being “overly competitive” in games. I want a mode of the game to do that in. That’s why I play ranked mode in league, where ARAM and Normal games are for the forfun players.

shotgun_ninja ,

Same. I like that League has the options for both. There’s a lot I dislike, but I’m also a glutton for punishment.

I like the Firaxis XCOM games because I can actually win.

However, the fact I do win also disappoints me. The originals have an unbeatable sense of hopelessness that if I do ever win, it will feel so much better. Kind of the same with Nethack. I’ve played easier roguelikes and won; but I have never beaten Nethack without cheating. If I ever manage to beat that legit, I’d absolutely lose my mind with feel good brain juice.

The_Picard_Maneuver OP ,
@The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world avatar

That’s impressive. I still haven’t been able to beat legendary ironman on XCOM 2.

I’d like to get into the old ones, but the UI is really dated and I’m having trouble figuring out what I need to do. Maybe I need to watch a short video or something.

MrKilroy ,

I have the exact opposite of a short video on Xcom lol. Ahoy made a movie length video on the older games that made me really want to get into them

The_Picard_Maneuver OP ,
@The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world avatar

Thanks! Saving this for when I get an opportunity. I know the old games are beloved and have some hardcore fans, so I really want to give them a fair shot.

Soundhole ,

The UI takes a little getting used to, but is actually pretty intuitive once you do.

The real tedium comes from trying to manage 6 bases and 4,000 troops and their ammo late game. Openxcom helps, but it can still be a slog.

But honesy the original UFO Defense is unbelievably deep and flexible once you get the hang of it in a way the later games aren’t.

The_Picard_Maneuver OP ,
@The_Picard_Maneuver@lemmy.world avatar

Oh, tedium doesn’t bother me! Sometimes in XCOM 2 I spend so much time managing my base that I get mildly annoyed when I have to stop to go on a mission.

I think I just need to grasp what I’m supposed to be doing in the original.

Soundhole , (edited )

That’s part of the game. Research in UFO Defense doesn’t always glean equipment, sometimes you get clues instead.

So if you play the game as intended, you don’t understand why the aliens are invading or where they come from until you piece it together throughout the course of the campaign.

But in 2023, you might just want to wiki all that stuff and no one would blame you!

My favorite XCOM experience is to load and save scum like a maniac only to discover I’m still hopelessly screwed in some later mission.

I recommend Wartales! It’s basically medieval XCOM

Crikey! Where’s the damn snow? Has climate change ruined the fun?

Kidding 😉

Cabrio ,

We only got one week of winter where I live. To put that in perspective winter is anything colder than 20C (68F), used to have at least a few more. Summer is going to be fun.

szlwzl OP ,

Yeah, it’s all a bit mad tbh, I do wish I’d applied more sunscreen for this “height of winter” weather…

What if herr Klaus was Barbie’s real father and Barbie had to invent Barbieworld and her alter ego perfectly happy girl to escape from the abuse from her father and all the horrible things she must have seen and heard during his career in the SS.

Aceticon ,

It would’ve been quite the plot twist when it was revealed that Barbieworld was all an insane fantasy world totally in her head and in real world she was catatonic in an insane asylum whilst in her mind she lived inside that fantasy.

massive_bereavement , (edited )
@massive_bereavement@kbin.social avatar

RimWorld sans mods is a great story teller:
My play allowed me to build a big colony within a mountain like in dwarf fortress, then I woke up an ancient terror like in df, but something unexpected happened when two of the remaining settlers, a kid and an old lady where able to escape.

I got them to escape the map, then resettle with almost impossible odds, with just the shirts on their backs, no food, tools nor weapons and the kid's just a kid.

Fast forward some odd 20 hours, their tribe was able to come back and re-take the base.

Which is something I've never seen in DF.

The_Picard_Maneuver OP ,

A lot of XCOM fans seem to also love Rimworld, Darkest Dungeon, etc. The roster management and permadeath creates unique stories for each playthrough.
