I get that. I don’t think they’re capable of that level of self reflection. To them, weird is BAD. It’s being a part of the “out” group, which is anathema to them.
I think the point is that Republicans detest the idea of being weird no matter what, so they would rage at the suggestion of being a good weird anyway. To them “good weird” is an oxymoron, even though they are actually very weird and not in any kind of good way.
It doesn’t matter. Convservativea cannot accept the notion of a “good weird” because it removes all justification from their beliefs. The whole conservative belief system is founded on the notion that there is an effective normal and that normal must be protected from those that would upset it.
They cannot say they’re the “good kind of weird”, because that means admitting that weird can be good. And if weird can be good, they have no ground to plant the roots of their beliefs in. They have to be normal, because if they’re weird, all the time they spent attacking others for being weird in the defence of what’s normal doesn’t make any sense. Calling themselves the good kind of weird is a complete 180 on what it means to be conservative and alienated a massive portion of their voting base who only vote conservative because they see people who are “just like them”, not weirdos who are willing to redefine sex and gender, or question historical narratives.
The “weird” angle of attack has been so effective because it deconstructs the very notion of what it means to be a conservative. Giving them an out through the “good kind of weird” doesn’t change that.
Isn’t that the exemption thing anyone can do with their employer’s payroll system? Doesn’t mean you don’t have to pay taxes, just that your employer won’t withhold it and you have to pay it yourself before the tax deadline. I mistakenly did that when I moved and first worked here and was shocked by the amount I owed when I did my taxes. lol
I’m not sure about exemption, but I know you can put as many dependents as you’d like on your W-4, reducing the amount withheld. Just like you said, this affects withholding only and has no bearing on the taxes you’ll owe in April.
It’s a good idea to adjust your withholdings so you break even in April. Big refunds seem nice until you realize you gave the government an interest free loan with money you could’ve put to work for you.
Right up front here - I am not suggesting that sovcits are in any way correct in their weird opinions on how anything works.
But --
You can have your employer not withhold taxes; your taxes are your responsibility. But many employer payroll departments will balk at that and tell you "they can't do that," probably because it's such an unusual thing for people to want to do that they don't want to deal with the hassle of it.
Of course, doing so is likely to raise a flag with the IRS. Pay your taxes.
That used to be common when bank accounts were giving high interest rates. You could save money by paying taxes quarterly (at the minimum amount so you wouldn’t get a fine) and keep that money earning.
I think we should stop with copium every time some change happens on Reddit.
It’s not going anywhere and it’s still the front page of the Internet. A few thousand folks migrating to Lemmy doesn’t mean Reddit is gonna die tomorrow.
And the CEO knows that perfectly well. Spez can juice this place more and more, and people, for the most part, will eat that and stay after a tiny show of discontent.
You know what? That might be for the better. While it sucks to have less content here, we at Lemmy also have a healthier demographic, and that’s something we should praise and look after.
If anything, at our best we should not spend our energy shitting on Reddit, but rather direct it to care for Lemmy. Start your cozy or important community and share it! Make new interesting posts, preferably not about Reddit or American politics - plenty of that in here. Leave useful and/or supportive comments. We can for once build our beautiful garden, not a place of powerless hate and spite.
People are more willing to engage in a positive way and not algorithmically trained to hate.
This times 100x. It is almost as if Reddit, Youtube and Facebook are all possessed by Cyber-Succubuses that intentionally suck the life out of you just to drive up their ad revenue.
It’s not “copium”, reddit is genuinely heavily populated by bots, advertisers, and sponsored content. There aren’t nearly as many actual people using it as before. I’m not saying they all came here, but reddit is definitely not “the front page of the internet” anymore, and hasn’t been since long before the api exodus occurred.
Nobody talks about reddit in daily conversation like insta, tiktok, youtube, or even facebook. The majority of people on the internet do not know it exists. It’s a weird, niche website desperately failing to claw it’s way to the mainstream, when the whole charm of it was that it wasn’t mainstream social media.
However, I agree that I’d like to stop hearing about it here.

The movie “Good on paper” had a joke about Reddit, but the joke basically implied that Reddit is full of sexist incels… so I get the feeling that most people have heard of Reddit but that Reddit is not viewed very favorably by the average person.
Came here to say that. Quirky weird is wanting to wear a propeller hat as an adult because it’s fun and no one can tell you no. Creepy weird is wanting to wear a propeller hat to predate on children. They are not the same.
Walk up to the counter with a 1099a and be like “here you go bud, it’s all there in the strawman account. Later.” and then walk out with what you took.
You’d be shocked. There’s a “garage sale” down from where I grew up that’s been going on since the 80s and is run by one of those folks. He only takes cash (hell, he might take gold too for all I know).
It’s literally like a single booth flea market and that guy hasn’t had another job in years.
He’s not really “in town”. But he’s definitely breaking tax laws. I would bet anything in the world that he’s in one of these groups telling people he hasn’t paid taxes in the last 40 years and if others are paying then they’re suckers.
Gotcha. I do wonder with these folks about property taxes. And sales tax I suppose but the not paying the property tax would get them run out of their house…
obviously it should be a couple mansions overlooking the water, and nothing else to make sure they’re not bothered by anything. and people living in these can just go homeless idk
Ask them and they’ll say Bankruptcy is itself magic. You say the magic words, sign the magic papers with some nonsense, slap some postage notes somewhere probably, and all the debt just goes away.
