Well, Lemmy users lately are reddit users. These users have been doing their best to turn Lemmy into what they recognize from reddit. And as everyone knows reddit users are porn sick.
I kind of miss those old Usenet days. Being 16 and waiting most of the night for a picture to load was great.
Back when I made sure to download the progressive JPEG, because loading single line top to bottom was hell. Unless there was a chance that the phone would be picked up, then I wanted regular JPEG, because then when I lost connection I still would have most of a picture.
In the early 90s, when I was a teen, I accessed the internet through the computer lab, downloaded tons of porn at a higher rate, uploaded the pics to local BBSes, got a huge ratio, downloaded tons of pirated games and had lots of porn. I was a genius back then. Not so much now.
The shit posters drive a wedge in a community and the people who don’t like the “innocent” jokes leave. This makes fertile ground for ideological take over. Rinse and repeat in Fandoms, subreddits, message boards, etc.
Alternatively, the people who are so brittle that shit-posting causes them to somehow turn on half of the community were always going to volatile puritans.
Except it’s not so black and white. Crude jokes can be funny and unfunny. Shit-posting is one thing but offensive jokes just often repeat themselves and I can understand wanting something new every now and then.
