As a new user from reddit, wanted to say thanks for welcoming us and working hard to accommodate us!

Lots of us new folks around! Also great there are so many apps being developed for Lemmy. Although the web UI is also pretty good.

Briz ,

I’ve seen so many helpful posts since joining yesterday, thank you to everyone for welcoming all of us, keeping servers running, posting helpful info on how to Lemmy, etc. - Happy to have a new home!

This is an attempt of someone shortsighted trying to play the long run. If you think bots are the reason for this, you are wrong. Limits are carefully chosen so that they severely hinder non-paying users. Musk is neither good at solving issues nor is he good at planning things. This is his attempt to force more people to buy Twitter Blue.

If you are running a bot or 7, paying 8$ is nothing.

Powerpoint ,

They just didn’t pay Google and are using bots as an excuse

Even if that is part of the reason, what he thinks is a solution only appears to be stop gap measure. In short term it might drive more people to buy if they are deeply invested in the platform, but in the long run it will force more people away from it, causing the whole thing to crumble. Am fully expecting them to stop allowing account removal or claiming they have more users than they actually do. Who would want to advertise on a desolate platform otherwise.

Musk a year from now: “New account creations have risen 1000%, with a 99% Twitter Blue attach rate.”

This is a transparent attempt to make the company more valuable to investors so that he can recoup some of the $22B he flushed down the toilet buying this turd of a company.

Hello everyone! Thank you to everyone working to keep servers running during this influx of signups and all the helpful posts I’m seeing around explaining instances and generally how to Lemmy.

Thank you for the warm welcome. Any tips and tricks for us Reddit refugees?

Drusas , to aww in y'all ever just get a dog for your dog?

Got a puppy for my middle aged dog just last year! They play together every day. The older dog gets so much more exercise now.

Love your name choices, by the way.

Love iguanas! Some iguana fun facts:

  • The brown circle behind the eye, above the white cheek circle, is the eardrum. It lies on the surface instead of being inside the ear canal.
  • Iguanas have a third eye, called a parietal eye. It’s hard to see, but it’s a little nodule/scale on top of their head. It senses the difference between night and day and sends signals to the pineal gland.

Now that is one big lovely floof 😻

Edit: I can see that your cat has a lot of hair coming out of his/her paws. You should really get trim this as its not good for the cat, from what I have been told.

unwellsnail ,

Toe tufts! They can sometimes get matted or the cat could become obsessive about cleaning them but if those things aren't an issue there's no real reason to trim them. There's no harm in trimming them if wanted but also not necessary.

First comment on Lemmy. Is there a ELI5 for Lemmy to help get us started? I’m using the Connect Lemmy app!

sweBers ,

Best I can say is that you have your local server, which is the server you originally signed up in. You then have all the rest of the connected (federated) servers that can see what you say.

Each server is its own mini-lemmy, so it is broken down into communities just like subreddits. Each has its own server administrators and each community has its own moderators.

Regarding content delivery, it seems to be about the same process: a link, image, video, or text from a certain community. The responses are similarly threaded with buttons for interaction.

The largest differences I have seen are that each server instance can have duplicate communities. Different servers have different tolerances for communities. In extreme cases, whole servers can be blocked (defederated) from your server. This is usually due to unwanted behavior from the users that is not curbed by the moderators or extreme communities that cause hardship for other users.

This is what I got after about a week of lurking. If I’m not correct, please let me know.
