@slinky317@lemmy.world avatar

Until there is a viable Twitter competitor, this will continue and people will keep using it.

There needs to be one that scales. Mastodon had its chance and it’s clear people don’t want it. Maybe the answer is Bluesky, but that’s not going to happen unless they open up their doors.

I can’t believe I’m rooting for Meta, but their Threads app might work out and it will be better once it syncs with ActivityPub.

jamescathybleak ,

Mastodon had its chance and it’s clear people don’t want it.

Why do you say that?

Classified ,

The whole decentralization thing is way too complicated for the layperson who just wants their content served to them without any fuss

esty ,
@esty@lemmy.ca avatar

I don’t think it’s decentralization that really makes it complicated, rather there’s no algorithm to keep you hooked and push you ads. It’s all human curated and so it’s harder to “get into” it if that makes sense

b3nsn0w ,
@b3nsn0w@pricefield.org avatar

that, and it’s also growing at the expected rate. mastodon is doing well, we just had an era of stability in social media for so long that a lot of people are forgetting how these platforms got started (or simply haven’t grown up with that). no platform is going to replace something highly established like twitter in a days or even months, but at the current rate mastodon definitely looks like the next big thing.

the network effect is going strong, and that’s really what matters. mastodon is alive and well, it’s just at the beginning of its bell curve, while twitter is already over its peak.

rikudou , to nostupidquestions in What are you doing today on July 4th?

Just standard stuff, not from US so it’s a day like any other. We have bank holiday tomorrow and overmorrow, that’s when the real fun starts.

MicroWave OP ,
@MicroWave@lemmy.world avatar

What’s your holiday tomorrow?

rikudou ,

5th is day of Cyril and Methodius, IIRC those two basically brought a writing script to our lands (along with Christianity which is less appreciated, but well).

6th is anniversary of burning of Jan Hus. He criticized the moral failings in Christianity and they responded by burning him.

bionicjoey ,

I learned about Jan Hus in Kingdom Come: Deliverance!

rikudou ,

Oh, nice!

brcl ,
@brcl@lemmy.world avatar

A bit ironic for Jan. I support anyone who called out the moral failings of the Christian church.

Btw, first time I’ve ever heard overmorrow, I’m definitely using that now.

Firefox is wrong. That’s red panda, not a fox.

kurosawaa ,

One of the Chinese word for red panda is literally Firefox, 火狐, that’s where the web browsers name comes from.

acquiescence ,

Aren’t they called 小熊猫 (little panda)? This is the first time I’ve heard them called 火狐

kurosawaa ,

Both are correct. If you check the dictionary both are listed, as well as 紅熊貓. 小熊貓 is definitely the most common word though.

Afaik this is not an error from Lemmy but from nginx, which is not able to relay the request to Lemmy and therefore returns a 502 bad gateway response. Imo this just means the servers are over capacity, so most likely a scaling/infrastructure issue.

I had a quick read of the code and it looks pretty solid to me. Not the most “enterprise” code imaginable, but definitely no code smell or quick hacking job.

KD_14 ,

I read a couple PRs and it seems like the are rejecting the more hacky stuff.

8k user instance owner requires 200$ per month to cover server cost. that should 2000$ per month for lemmy.world…and counting

explodicle ,

Wow I had no idea it was so high! I gotta get into the hosting business.

Coelacanth ,
@Coelacanth@lemmy.world avatar

Do you know if costs scale linearly with user count?

mr_washee_washee ,

just a wild a guess. will it should be more dependant on bandwidth and traffic than users. posters on c/cats are more demanding than posters of c/news in terms of ressources and bandwidth. text is lightweight compared to image oe gifs.

Coelacanth ,
@Coelacanth@lemmy.world avatar

For sure. Larger userbase also increases likelihood of more and bigger donors, however, so the critical question is whether that revenue increases at a higher or lower rate than server costs.

GojuRyu ,

It does not. It in large part scales with the amount of content the local and federated communities. So because many users will subscribe to many of the same communities, more users will add less extra cost aftter a point. This is a bit simplified though as it also scales with users but to a lesser degree from my understanding.

Disclaimer: I’m not hosting myself just to be clear but this is what I have gathered from answers to similar questions as well as my own experience as a software dev.

Strange you should mention that. One guy attempted a speed run from his 15th floor bathroom window but without a parachute 3 weeks ago. Was certainly faster but also louder and no longer has any concerns for safety…

I doubt it’s the performance and more the lack of content. Even copy-pastas would be good at this time.

danhasnolife ,

The content here feels much better than other alternatives. Squabbles is stale by the end of the day (smaller userbase) and discuit is painfully quiet. It’s not perfect, but the content here actually helps me to tolerate the server growing pains
