Google+ was too much of a copy of the existing social networks at the time.

I’m still a Google Reader orphan though.

dismalnow ,

2013 was a terrible year for media consumption.

Google killed the only thing about Google that I had any sort of true feelings for. It was exactly what I wanted in a feed reader. It almost killed my affinity to read the news during my commutes.

It was the same year that The Onion stopped printing paper copies, too.

It was also the year The Hangover 3 was released at the request of nobody, but I digress.

RIP Google Reader.

Coeus ,

I’ve seen the Hangover 1 a ton of times. I’ve never seen The Hangover 3.

One of the best parts of this - especially if the trend continues - is that it makes the “Extinguish” part of a possible “Embrace, Expand, Extinguish” attack by Meta’s Threads more difficult.

Cutting off access to a bunch of tiny self-hosted private instances won’t even ping on their radar. But cutting off federation with official government platforms? That’s different.

So you’re telling me it is just under 12% and 6.5% of Linux users have poor privacy settings

Neon ,

well, actually the 6.5% have better privacy settings, as they are in a larger crowd than the 5.4% "unknown" users.
So they are more interchangeable than the "unknown" Users

j4k3 ,
@j4k3@lemmy.world avatar

Tell that to the large group that is now seeing Linode ads constantly with targeted advertising Mr Askshelly.

jakoma02 ,

Sorry, can’t resist: it would not be 6.5 % of Linux users, it would be 6.5 % overall. That would mean about 54.8 % of Linux users.

Glad to see someone freed up the printer, but gosh I wish we could have open source printer firmware, like DD-WRT for routers.

tallwookie ,
@tallwookie@lemmy.world avatar

it’d require that all OEM’s agree to specific standards and they won’t because being closed source = $$$.

likewise why no one is reverse engineering printers, there’s no $$$ in it

betterdeadthanreddit ,

The demonic summoning ritual involved in bringing a printer to life is awfully hard to replicate using non-proprietary methods.

Buddahriffic ,

I wonder how feasible an open source printer would be, like the open source 3d printers.

sweBers ,

Possible, but the tolerances would be a lot for people. Also, one would need a solid stream of supplies.

Buddahriffic ,

Which is kinda funny if it’s easier to make a printer that can print objects vs a printer that can print on surfaces. Like it’s harder to draw a picture of an object than it is to create an instance of that object.

sweBers ,

The idea is pretty ironic. If one was patient enough, they could design a CAD machine that would write out their prints. I believe I had seen them before. The problems with that machine are speed and efficiency.

WhiskyTangoFoxtrot ,

3D print a plate with your document on it. Dip the plate in ink and press it to a sheet of paper.

Buddahriffic ,

The latest update to the printing press: adding a 3d printer to print new plates, and a recycler to reuse that plastic once you’ve printed your page.

Uses 10x the energy, recycled plastic gets junked because of ink contamination, but still 25% cheaper than running an hp inkjet because you can use bulk ink and don’t have to keep replacing your dried up CMY inks to stop it from refusing to print your black and white document.

Easily DS9’s best episode, and it has little to do with the Dominion or Section 31 or even the Prophets/Pah-Wraiths. Runner up to my favorite Trek episode ever, the other one being The Offspring from TNG.

47_Alpha_Tango OP ,
@47_Alpha_Tango@lemmy.world avatar

I still put Far Beyond the Stars in the top spot.

The Offspring is a powerful episode but I think The Inner Light is TNG at it’s very best.

startrekexplained ,

The Inner Light is good, but I respectfully disagree with the consensus that it’s TNG’s best.

47_Alpha_Tango OP ,

It’s a close call between The Inner Light and Measure of a Man with The Offspring in 3rd and Family a very close 4th.

No, EU and Germany have been in Mastodon for months.

On Mastodon or their own instances?

ColonelPanic ,

Both have their own instances: social.bund.de and social.network.europa.eu

That’s really cool. This is a good use-case example of Mastadon, the government can run its own official instance for announcements and information without impacting other instances

Aux ,

Oh shit, I did hear about that. Completely forgot, thank you!

The EU started their own instance when Musk bought Twitter

Truth Social is technically a Mastodon instance but it was made by Trump and company after he was in office so it was not used for official communications from the US government.

theinspectorst , to startrek in DS9’s The Visitor is an absolute masterpiece
@theinspectorst@kbin.social avatar

A lot of people (myself included) would argue this is the best DS9 episode.

I think the Sisko/Jake father-son relationship is a key part of what makes DS9 different to other Trek - DS9 was about putting down roots in a place with everything that entails, in contrast to TOS and TNG being about a ship going from place-to-place each week, and multiple senior crew members having their families prominent in the show was a part of how they emphasised that theme. The Visitor is the key episode of the Sisko/Jake relationship and hence a key episode in what makes DS9 different.
