The taco bell app requires tiktok’s server or it’ll infinitely load. Not sure why I need that to order a taco

Now I’m getting curious about the vivaldi browser. It’s chromium based (apart from firefox, what isn’t) but seems pretty security/privacy aware.

theshatterstone54 ,

It’s not fully open source, but it’s so good, it’s full of features, incredibly customisable, it really is a power user browser.

glacier ,
@glacier@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

It overheats my MacBook and runs like shit on my windows desktop. and frankly too many features for me that I would never use.

TheInsane42 ,
@TheInsane42@lemmy.world avatar

Biggest advantage it has over FF is the dark mode option you have to overrule even websites and make them dark. FF has dark reader plugin, but that is a pale replacement for vivaldi’s built-in experimental code.

alsaaas ,
@alsaaas@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

it’s proprietary and thus not viable for any privacy conscious person. (assuming they know to trust as few third parties as possible)

For anyone considering Firefox but still reluctant for reasons check out Waterfox. It’s been the best for me for years now. Honestly the best fork.

Youtube shorts block is a godsend by the sounds of it, installing now.

winkerjadams ,

You can also easily block them with ublock origin’s block element feature :)

Historical_General ,
@Historical_General@lemmy.world avatar

I like the part where it’ll play as a normal video as well.

JohnBoBon ,

Yesssss. Youtube shorts are fine except that it won’t let you navigate them like a normal video. I don’t understand why they don’t wanna have consistant layout between shorts and videos. It’s like a separate site

whats_all_this_then ,

My guess: keeping it similar to TikTok, since that’s what shorts trt to compete with.

Nioxic ,

alternatively:

“Blocktube” allows you to just straight up block all shorts

and use slightly more advanced code to block any videos with various parameters (specific words in their title, length, from a certain channel etc)

a lot of youtubers i follow constantly have “podcast” episodes and i dont give a fuck about them, but with blocktube… its like they dont exist

BrainisfineIthink , to technology in Ally (bank)mobile app fails without connection to graph.facebook.com

I don’t think it’s that connection causing problems, mainly because my app works fine (mostly) and I don’t have a connection to any meta services. There are none on my phone, and I do not have a Facebook login at all. I will say that of all the apps I use, Ally is the most finicky. It seems to crash itself every 2-3 uses for no apparent reason at all.

That said, it seems unlikely that the app would fail for you in this case just because you blocked access to a service that I know it does not actually require to operate (because it has to be operating without it on my phone), and another poster tested and could not recreate. Not sure if that helps, but may point you towards diagnosing what is really causing the issue!

I mean I get the whole post isn’t super serious but for real, I doubt that getting rid of Hitler-Hitler would have stopped the rise of fascism and nazis. There would have just been another leader who might have caused even greater damage.

of course not, it hasn’t been updated for FIFTEEN YEARS and definitely didn’t even get an engine upgrade in 2017 let alone a new version half a month ago and a hotfix last week

starman ,
@starman@programming.dev avatar

Google products are intentionally slower on firefox

Chadus_Maximus ,

What about other chromium browsers?

dudewitbow ,

No effect, bevause youtube uses an outdated version of Shadow DOM, which only chromium based browsers have installed. It then makes browsers like Firefox and pre chromium edge start youtube terribly.

LetMeEatCake ,

Yes. In fact, I’d say that Firefox runs clearly better than Chrome does these days. An inversion of the past.

ugh ,

I switched from Chrome to Firefox somewhat recently. The experience really isn’t any different, except Firefox doesn’t use 110% of your CPU.

I have a ton of privacy extensions which causes a few issues when creating accounts by linking to your Google account (the pop-up is blocked) or opening redirect links to apps (I think it’s only Discord that I’ve had an issue with). I don’t consider those drawbacks because the browser is doing its job. Instead, I go copy and paste the link in Chrome.

AdventureSpoon ,

A hell of a lot smoother than chrome

vicfic , to lemmyshitpost in Another classic meme
@vicfic@iusearchlinux.fyi avatar

tbh, I can’t tell the difference.

ImplyingImplications ,

Catapult = energy comes from tension. Trebuchet = energy comes from gravity pulling on a counterweight

You can only build up so much tension in ropes and wood so the weight of what can be thrown is limited. With a trebuchet you can throw heavier objects by increasing the weight of the counterweight and length of the throwing arm

HeckGazer ,

These are both examples of catapults, broadly, siege engines that use stored energy to make big projectile go over there real good.

What people tend to refer to when they say “catapult” is a mangonel or onager, and go on to imply that the trebuchet is not a catapult. It is a catapult, just a different kind. Much like we have cars, which are vehicles, but we also have trucks, which are also vehicles.

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catapult#Medieval_catapul…

blake24964 OP ,
@blake24964@lemmy.world avatar

That is really informative, I never knew there were so many types of catapults (and they were classed as catapults).

Vanced. Still works like a charm! Get Vanced Manager from APK Mirror and install.

wizardbeard , (edited )

Please don’t. Revanced has been around for well over a year now and is actually maintained. Vanced was abandoned ages ago. Revanced is significantly less buggy, has options to block shorts, and has Sponsorblock built in now.

Official site: revanced.app

APK mirror is great for getting the right Youtube APK version to patch with Revanced Manager though. Revanced also supports Youtube Music, pretty much giving you the premium features for free.
