Every morning I wake up, grab a coffee and update my system @world. Almost every day it goes without a hitch and I watch the system evaluate and resolve any incongruities that might emerge from updates by itself. Other times I might need to make a intervention in the dependencies to guide it to a resolution; but it’s a small nudge in the right direction, like tweaking a miniature ship inside a bottle.

This is partially tongue in cheek but I unironically get a lot of joy out of administrating my PC: Having it completely customized and working exactly like I need it to.

You will need to shop for a car inverter. Find one that is at least 1,500 watts, and it will help you power your refrigerator for up to five hours—usually without damaging your car battery. Considering how much food we keep in our refrigerators, a $200 car inverter is a bargain!

Another source says they hold around 700 Wh. So not even 30 minutes actually

    MorganLeFail ,

At least they don’t run constantly?

    nixcamic ,

Nah if the fridge starts cold and you aren’t constantly opening the door you can easily get 5 hours on a car battery.

    Blackmist ,

If your fridge uses 1.4KW you need a new fridge.

    nixcamic ,

I mean that’s the least wrong part imo. I’ve ran a fridge off of a car battery and if it starts cold you can go a lot longer than that.

    Dultas ,

Or spend twice that and get a cheap generator that will actually power your frig and other stuff for more than a few hours.

    pachrist ,

Nah, it’s definitely easier during a tornado to go outside, jack up my car, remove the wheel, remove the wheel liner, and then pull the battery from inside the bumper because that’s a really convenient place to keep a car battery. Then I just have to lug the battery inside, hook it up, and keep 2 small children and 3 dogs away from it. Much easier than a generator.

    AtmaJnana , (edited )

I assume because Bitcoin has a public ledger and Monero doesn’t. Its more than that, but that’s the gist. Monero literally exists to offer additional privacy over Bitcoin.

No idea about those VPNs in particular, but I assume its a similar privacy issue, such as keeping logs…

    prole ,

I know what Monero is, it just wasn’t clear to me how it relates to those VPNs

    AtmaJnana ,

Sure, but not all readers of the thread will be familiar.

    Chakravanti ,

Bitcoin is a Snitchcoin. Everything is does everywhere it goes and everyone trading in its entire history is tracked and publicated %100 all the way down to the IP address.

Closest thing you can get away with that is to swap Monero for the Bitcoin on Bisq.

Monero is anonymous. %100. Regular upgrade to the shuffling of the anonymity is by design and happens between twice a year and every other year.

Mullvad accept Monero directly. No third party snitch tracker doing the acceptance for them. They give the same discount for the payment method.

    prole ,

I’m familiar with Bitcoin and Monero, it just wasn’t clear to me how they related to those VPNs.

I’m all for privacy but if you feel the need to pay for a VPN with Monero, and get seemingly offended by ones that don’t accept it, then I really have to wonder what you need it for.

Just an FYI, if I’m suspicious and I’ve only interacted with you once, I’m sure anyone who actually cares is also already suspicious of you. If you’re so big on Monero, then you should also know about OpSec.

    Chakravanti ,

Nord is a snitch VPN. Nothing you do in it is private.

I’m paranoid by choice. I’m choice of such because I’d rather have the skill before the need is the status and late to the party with any skill at all.

    prole ,

Ok, and how are they a “snitch VPN”? Got any evidence to back up the claim? Or is it just run of the mill paranoia?

I don’t have a horse in this race, and have no interest in defending Nord. I’ve just seen nothing that indicates what you said is true.

    Chakravanti ,

No. All my old shit is gone. I was in a coma for 3mo and 3 more in rehab. Came back to all my comps fried or stolen. I know enough never to fuck with them. Don’t take my word for it. Do your own gorramn research.

    Is that discord or webcord?

    Loucypher OP ,

    Discord

    pineapplelover ,

Give webcord a try. It’s foss

    leopold ,

It’s just the proprietary web client embedded in Electron… kinda like the official client. It does offer more privacy and solves some problems with the official client, tho. Abaddon and gtkcord4 are the only usable fully foss clients afaik.

    Loucypher OP ,

By usable you mean they work just as well? Any trade-off you can find?

    leopold , (edited )

No, I just mean that they work ok and you can use them to reliably read messages, send them and some other things. They don’t have all of the features the official client has. If you like me would rather not use Discord at all but reluctantly had to join a couple servers, they’re plenty good enough. Otherwise, you’ll probably want to use to official client. abaddon has voice support, gtkcord4 doesn’t. gtkcord4 has markdown, but abaddon doesn’t. Neither have screen-sharing or webcam support.

    Loucypher OP ,

Yeah dude, I am not a fan of discord and resisted for years but had to do an account on a couple of servers… thanks for sharing those!

If you’re using C++, why not use streams?

    solrize ,

Yes, fprintff is a C thing.

    SpaceNoodle ,

Well, that means that it’s also a C++ thing, but streams are an even slicker concept that aren’t a C thing, making higher-level code look nice and shiny - and abstracting away loads of I/O pain points while encapsulating useful features.

    solrize ,

C++ streams are ugly in their own right, but C++ preferred practice these days is to treat it as its own language rather than as a C superset. That is, lots of crufty old C stuff still works in C++ for legacy reasons, but using it when you don’t have to is considered inappropriate.

    SpaceNoodle ,

Yeah, streams are old and crusty and horrific on the inside (don’t ask about the time I implemented a socket layer with streams), but still less clunky than the C standard library (unless you’re really into being a memory Nazi).

    SpaceNoodle ,

    *ffprintfff

    stsquad OP ,

I wasn’t personally using C++, I was using relatively modern C which has had an homegrown object system added to it.

    SpaceNoodle ,

Then it’s not C++. And probably a mess.

Scio , (edited ) to linux_gaming in Steam Hardware survey for January 2024
    @Scio@kbin.social avatar

Yesterday was the first time I got the survey on my Deck.

I got it on the desktop (as I often am during the day because I do all my work on it), and noticed that while it reported the device as Valve manufactured and the OS correctly, a whole bunch of other data was wrong, like it said the device didn't support touch, etc.

Should I have taken the survey on Game Mode? Is it even possible to get the survey in Game Mode?

    sugar_in_your_tea ,

Yup, I got it recently in regular gaming mode. I doubt it matters which one the survey gets taken in, it gathers system info.

    Scio ,
    @Scio@kbin.social avatar

Did you happen to notice if yours also said touch support: none?

    sugar_in_your_tea ,

I didn’t. I rarely use desktop mode, so I doubt anything odd was going on.

If there’s a report somewhere I can review, I’m happy to look it up.
