Do everything you can! Switch people’s default search engine in their browser if they won’t switch. I am nearly done coverting my entire office to DDG! Row! Row! Fight the power!

Im28xwa ,

I’m switching as many people as I can to FF and a privacy respecting search engine

Sanctus ,

Their ads and search are their bread and butter if I’m not mistaken. So even if all you can do is change their browser’s default engine every little bit helps. I myself have uninstalled chromium browsers and switch to FF/LibreWolf. I still have Google Authenticator but that will take me longer to kick with its 30+ entries. I’d love it if I could find out which services cost them money and heavily use those for the time being.

Im28xwa ,

If your phone is an Android phone and it is rooted then Aegis can easily with a couple of clicks import all your data from Google authenticator

Sanctus ,

That is my next move as well as abandoning GPay. My final move will be sorting through the 400+ accounts attached to my gmail and switch that to proton. With my schedule it will take me possibly 2 months to get around to it unfortunately.

Im28xwa ,

I was going to do the same today (switch from gmail) but got interrupted by other things

I sincerely hope so. Elon Musk is a fucking idiot, and deserves to lose all the money he’s put into it.

The innocent people working there, however, don’t deserve it. I hope they can all get out and find other work before this shitshow finally reaches the bottom of the abyss they’re sliding into.

The_Tribble_Juggler , to linux in What are the main challenges in Linux adoption for New users, and how can it be addressed?

When's the last time the average user has had to install an operating system?

That's the biggest obstacle right there. I think plenty of non-techy people would use linux if it came preinstalled.

GenderNeutralBro ,

Also, if it came pre-installed, one would assume all the hardware was properly supported. A big pain point with Linux is that sometimes things just don’t work right, and there’s nobody to turn to for help except Google. It’s been a while since I attempted to run Linux on a laptop, but when I did I struggled a lot getting good battery life, good trackpad support, and a sleep mode that worked correctly.

Reputations live on for decades after they are earned. Perhaps all of my laptop problems are ancient history, but I have no way to know without trying, and it’s too much effort.

cynetri ,
@cynetri@midwest.social avatar

I have an example: a little whole ago I put Arch on my 2-in-1 laptop just because I prefer open-source philosophy, and although a lot of things worked out-of-the-box, my biggest problem was the actual 2-in-1 function. I know that, like Windows, I’d have to do a little digging to get it working (except Windows would involve drivers, Linux required settings) and I got a makeshift solution working: KDE has its own screen-rotating feature, and I made 2 shell commands on the desktop that, when pressed, disable/enable the keyboard/trackpad. Turns out it only works on Xorg, and Wayland requires a way more complicated setup to work, so I just gave up using Wayland on it. Something to do with udev rules or something

gnarly , to fediverse in Second largest Lemmy instance preemptively un-friends Facebook
@gnarly@lemmy.world avatar

So that settles it. We have an option if meta federated and it goes to shit. Lemmy.world’s stance is correct. Let’s just see how this goes.

Anticorp ,

You don’t wait and see how it goes with these sorts of things. They will destroy the community before you can take action and it’ll be too late. They will do their best to destroy the fediverse and privatize it. They can’t buy it like they usually do with competition, so they’ll ooze their way in, contribute bullshit to the project, create new proprietary functionality that only works on their instance, convince everyone all the other instances are broken, and walk away with all the users. You don’t invite vampires into your house.

Xanvial ,

Do you realize that fediverse is not one single project? For example Lemmy and Mastodon has different implementation and developers. The only thing that connecting them is ActivityPub, which is owned by W3C, not the community. So basically Meta created their own implementation for Threads (so it’s already propertiary), and theoretically already able to pressure W3C to change the ActivityPub without even joining fediverse

eu8 ,

How will they destroy it if they are literally only making it larger and more useable. The average normie today has no reason to create a mastadon account, because almost no one uses it. But if they can use a major social media platform, and use a federated free service like mastadon, then that makes mastadon much more valuable to them.

The fact that a social media service is objectively good doesn’t mean anyone is going to use it. Having backing from the biggest social media company in the world, might actually get people to use it.

MrKurteous ,

I started swaying towards defederating after reading this article, maybe you’d like to take a look and see what you think? It argues much better than I ever could.

jerdle_lemmy ,

This is the classic size vs purity argument. Would it be better to have a large fediverse with corporate input or a small one without?
