pinkfloyd , to memes in When I hear about YouTube banning AdBlockers

if I recall correctly many adblockers (including uBlock origin) stopped working a while ago on chrome when chrome implemented manifest v3.0 for extensions

dingus OP ,
@dingus@lemmy.ml avatar

Hasn’t happened quite yet. uBlock Origin on Chrome is much less robust than on Firefox, that’s for sure. Manifest 3 is finishing it’s rollout this month and we’re looking at not being able to functionally use adblockers in Chrome very soon.

pinkfloyd ,

Ah okay, thanks for the info. I don’t use chrome myself and haven’t been reading up on the whole ordeal recently so my information was a bit outdated lol

XPost3000 , to reddit in Infinity for Reddit's latest update...

This is reddit killing third party apps, because even if you did subscribe you’re still not getting NSFW because reddit is taking that out of the API anyways

So who would pay literally more for less? Reddit can say all they want about supporting 3rd party but even the blind could see through them

RickyRigatoni ,
@RickyRigatoni@lemmy.ml avatar

I bet Infinity is doing this instead of hanging up their keyboards like the other apps specifically because they know it won’t work and want to be living proof of it.

jarfil ,

Some of the other apps are making Lemmy versions instead.

degrails ,
@degrails@lemmy.fmhy.ml avatar

The devs were hoping that they can keep their apps up and their livelihoods without too much additional work, that’s fair from them I suppose. But they should definitely be taking a hard look at porting their existing apps for the Fediverse, if they aren’t yet.

Do 8 billions of people using single use plastic have the same impact of 20 billionaires on their yachts? This cannot be that difficult, guys. Billionaires are absolutely a problem but our actions as individuals are extremely important anyway.

yogthos OP ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

That’s not actually correct, it’s not change in individual actions that needs to happen but systemic change. People act in the way that makes sense for them to act given the circumstances they’re in on individual level. What needs to change is the economic system to move away from consumerism, production of disposable goods, planned obsolescence and so on. This can only happen when the economy is publicly owned and directed towards the goal of profitability as opposed to towards creating as much profit as possible for people who own the companies.

maporita , to worldnews in 2023 Edelman report shows that China has the highest trust in government

Citizens of authoritarian countries often trust their governments more than those in liberal democracies. This apparent paradox is easily explained by the tight control these governments maintain over what people can see and hear. Since Tiananmen the Chinese government has ramped up it’s campaign to eradicate any opinions that are contrary to the government line, and now a whole generation has grown up in this new, hermetically sealed environment.

pancake ,
@pancake@lemmy.ml avatar

It’s impossible to systematically lie to an entire country’s population about the country itself. It’s never happened anywhere on Earth and will never do so with current technology. It is however trivial to lie about other countries, which I like to always keep in mind. Think for a moment what reason a Chinese person would even have to dislike their government, when they are clearly doing a good job and actually solving their problems. Even the victims of Tiananmen weren’t those often talked-about “pro-Democracy” students, most were anti-liberalization communist worker protestors.

yogthos OP ,
@yogthos@lemmy.ml avatar

Buddy, entire books have been written on how western oligarch owned media works with western regimes to manipulate public opinion. Here are a couple you should read:

Thing is that no amount of propaganda can counter the actual lived experience of the people in a country. This is why there is growing social unrest despite the west having the most sophisticated and best funded propaganda in the world. People can see that their lives are constantly getting worse and they’ve lost trust in the system and the media.

If people’s material conditions in China were declining the same way they are in the west, then people in China would lose faith in their system too. Yet, the opposite is happening because people are seeing their lives improve drastically with each an every decade.

snekerpimp , to selfhosted in My personal Newbie Sunday: How to install docker on Debian.

Docker has an install script on their https://github.com/docker/docker-install page that takes a lot of the headache out. Also ‘sudo usermod -aG docker $USER’ will allow you to run docker without sudo.

@Ferawyn@lemmy.world avatar

I would suggest having a look at podman. It’s a drop-in replacement for docker, except it doesn’t require a constantly running daemon, it comes in the main package repositories, so you don’t have to do the key and repository stuff, and cockpit has a plugin to help manage podman containers.

Tiritibambix OP ,
@Tiritibambix@lemmy.ml avatar

Yes, as stated in the title and post. It is stable and easy to use and update. It also is available on a wide variety of architectures and devices. So far it never failed me.

I believe my post could apply to other systems.

If that was a rethorical question, I believe you’re not in favor of it. I think it would be more constrictive to elaborate and participate to the conversation:)

For whatever reason, to this day I get a 403 error on http://google.com/ from IPv6. https://www.google.com/ works through.

Sometimes it’s not your side that is broken.

SteveTech ,

http://google.com/ works fine for me, tested in Firefox and with curl -6. So it could actually be your side that is broken, although it is probably your ISP’s.

remram ,
@remram@lemmy.ml avatar

My side works fine, Google just doesn’t like the address. It’s a tunnelbroker address, maybe they consider that bots… but only for some of their servers? It’s weird

SteveTech ,

Oh okay, IMO IPv6 tunnels are worse than just disabling it, because it’s basically just a proxy with IPv6, and since there’s no encryption (at this layer) both your ISP and now the tunnel could collect your data, as well as added latency.

But I guess it’s okay for experimentation or if you actually require IPv6 for something.

remram ,
@remram@lemmy.ml avatar

Hard disagree there. It is a tunnel, it is plenty fast if the intermediate node is close enough, and why would you want encryption at the IP layer.

It works great and gives me IPv6 that I otherwise wouldn’t have with my ISP (Optimum), allowing me to connect to native IPv6 site and use all the IPv6 functionality I want (dedicated IPs for containers/VMs etc).

SteveTech ,

Yeah those are some good points, I guess I’m just spoilt with native IPv6.

darkfiremp3 ,

ipv6.google.com is a thing! If it works for you, you have working ipv6, if it doesn’t, you don’t!

What if this person comes to Lemmy or kbin and becomes a mod...yes, I'm asking the inevitable question.

curiosityLynx ,

Easy. Kbin/lemmy admins actually listen to their users, unlike spez and his cronies. The asshole can move to their own instance and continue there, but that might get them defederated.

Schaedelbach ,

Reddit wasn’t like that all the time. I do remember a time on Reddit where it was - or at least felt like it - a bit like it feels on Lemmy right now. Lots of nerdy outsider communities and admins who seemed to care. Not trying to be a negative nancy here, just a reality check or something like that.

Serinus ,

Federation is over-hyped when joining or promoting. It’s only really important when there’s a problem.

It’s like trying to sell a new car by featuring the warranty, or trying to sell a computer by talking about backups. Both important, but not a shiny selling point for new users.

I get why the devs want to feature federation. If you build a car, you’re probably going to want to talk about the engine and its design. But the users just want “car go fast”.
