A program that I use often uses an embedded MPV window for video playing, and Wayland doesn’t support that, and apparently won’t:https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/wayland/wayland-protocols/-/issues/74

So until something changes with that program, MPV, or Wayland, or I decide to rewrite the program myself, I’m stuck with X11.

I think that really depends on the implementation details. For example, consider a thought experiment where artificial neurons can be created that behave just the same as biological ones. Then each of your neurons is replaced by an artificial version while you are still conscious. You wouldn’t notice losing a single neuron at a time, in fact this regularly happens already. Yet, over time, all your biological neurons could be replaced by artificial ones at which point your consciousness will have migrated to a new substrate.

Alternatively, what if one of your hemispheres was replaced by an artificial one. What if an artificial hemisphere was added into the mix in addition to the two you have. What if a dozen artificial hemispheres were added, or a thousand, would the two original biological ones still be the most relevant parts of you?

I am using Wayland and the only issue that is a bit annoying is that I can’t use fractional scaling because it breaks FreeRDP clients. Both Remmina and FreeRDP have issues when scaling is active. For now I just increased the font size in KDE its not perfect but good enough until this is hopefully fixed.

Yerbouti , to linux in You think Linux is living a Renaissance with Gaming and New Non-Technical Users?

Yes! I’m an example of this. I’ve decided to give Linux a try on my old 2012 Macbook last year, because I’ve heard so much about it on Lemmy. I played with it for a few days and realized it was the OS I’ve been dreaming of. Ended up installing Nobara on a partition of my gaming PC (with NVDIA) and cant remeber last time I’ve booted Windows. I still have to work on macOS on my M1, but I’ve install Asahi and alternate between the two. I am now convince 80,% pc user would be way more happy on Linux. I really think FOSS are now better then licence software in most case.

SkabySkalywag ,

Noice. Hadn’t heard of Asahi. Gonna try it out on my old Mac!

Yerbouti ,

Asahi is for M1 to M3 macs only, it works well. If your old mac is an Intel, you can basically install any distro!

I’ve broken my Nvidia driver 4x this week and I wouldn’t have it any other way (not /s)

Nothing else compares to the flexibility of linux and if I need a kernel-level anti cheat I do it on a separate drive entirely (which can’t see my linux BTFS drive at all)

utopiah ,

I’ve broken my Nvidia driver 4x this week

Genuinely confused by that statement… been using an NVIDIA for years, both closed (to play and work) and open drivers (to test only) and beside having the “wrong” version for CUDA and some graphical bug in specific situation, e.g ALT-Tab out of game or resuming from a game leading to some minor visual glitches, I’ve never encountered even a reboot. I also have relatively recent drivers but I don’t even know which version I have (checked out of curiosity : Driver Version: 525.147.05 CUDA Version: 12.0).

So… I don’t get it, what leads you and others to such situation? Are you reverse engineering the drivers? Are you overclocking? Are you changing some specific parameters that are not stable?

I’m asking because this is so different from my experience that I don’t get it.

Zuberi ,
@Zuberi@lemmy.dbzer0.com avatar

Want specifics or just the general vibe of me being a dumbie ;)? Stable Diffusion (the web gui version) uses CUDA 11 and all of my attempts to work around this let me w/ either a perma black screen or a 1FPS Desktop Enviornment that leads to a crash of said DE in ~30 seconds or so.

It seems that running that exact NVIDIA driver + Cuda 11 freaks the fuck out and I tried in maybe 5+ ways before giving up and accepting Cuda 12 and no Simple Diffusion (at least on this partition)

someacnt_ ,

Interesting, why does this just work for me? Hardware really is strange.

flashgnash , (edited )

Nvidia has caused me much suffering in both of my machines, only recently fixed hibernation killing the DE, latest driver version at the moment for many GPUs causes horrible stuttering in games

Most web games absolutely suck, think webgl isn’t working

This is all on wayland though because I’m hopelessly addicted to hyprland

I’m still struggling with remote desktop software and other alternatives such as sunshine. KDE connect input sharing is inconsistent on wayland, but they will probably fix that eventually. xwaylandvideobridge is great when it works, but currently has an issue with eating input invisibly. Also, some things just seem to be kinda wonky. For example screen sharing portal when sharing my screen in a browser seems to open twice. Same with obs. Still no good virtual keyboard. If onboard worked on wayland that would be perfect.

Not perfect integration but with a workaround Onboard is somewhat usable.

On my Steam Deck I’m mostly using Steam’s keyboard with Maliit for logins and the lock screen and Onboard in case I need special keys.

Yes the duplicate portals are a mess. On Signal desktop there are 4 portal requests and they all say something different.

What if you do it in a ship of theseus type of way. Like, swapping each part of the brain with an electronic one slowly until there is no brain left.

Wonder if that will work.

Was looking for the Pantheon reference in this thread! Just finished that show and loved it. Of course it takes plenty of liberties for the sake of the storytelling, but still, at least it explores these interesting topics!

Anyone reading this thread, do yourself a favor and check out Pantheon!

Right? Like what if as cells die or degrade instead of being replaced by the body naturally they are replaced by nanites/cybernetics/tech magic. If the process of fully converting took place over the course of 10 years, then I don’t see how the subject would even notice.

It’s an interesting thing to ponder.

The subject also doesn’t notice if you end their consciousness either.

Ah, for me moonlight just “searching for connected computers” forever with no controller buttons working at all and no ability to cancel it to put in the IP of the sunshine PC.

Moonlight on my phone works fine though, moonlight on steam link seems to just have a problem.
