Well yeah, if you passed a reference then once the original is destroyed it would be null. The real trick is to make a copy and destroy the original reference at the same time, that way it never knows it wasn’t the original.

I want Transmetropolitan style burning my body to create the energy to boot up the nanobot swarm that my consciousness was just uploaded to

I dunno. I could be quite happy having brain children or as a copy of a consciousness at a given point in time.

In my own case I’d put it down to Flatpak etc. finally resolving the software installation problem.

Installing most Linux OSes has been easy enough for decades, but a program not in your distro’s repos could be a nightmare to get working.

I was there in darker times, with a modem that had no Linux driver, so no connection at all, learning from printouts from the library.

I may have PTSD from it.

mryessir ,

I disagree naming Flatpak etc. as the reason for more adoption. New users I know of do not know how to search for software and software alternatives in the first place.

Documentation and engagement on linux just improves by each day. Experiences are shared and people may just be curious. Then there are news about linux breakthroughs by big players like valve.

Imo a beginner linux distro should prompt on install:

If you are a potential linux adaptor do not get discouraged. You may have spent your entire life building knowledge for an other operating system. Once you grok the aimed simplicity of UNIX and which parts are involved in your daily tasks you will be at least as efficient as with other operating systems. The most inportant thing: Have fun on your journey and engage in our chats, forums and/or in social media.

Thank you for your attention.

qaz ,

New users don’t need to know nor care about Flatpak. They just go to the app store, install the niche app on their niche distro without any hassle.

More devices need to come with Linux out of the box. It should be possible to buy a device with Linux at your local Walmart.

no.

When is Wayleonardo coming to debian as standard?

xantoxis , to programmerhumor in "I want to live forever in AI"

So, I’m curious.

What do you think happens in the infinite loop that “runs you” moment to moment? Passing the same instance of consciousness to itself, over and over?

Consciousness isn’t an instance. It isn’t static, it’s a constantly self-modifying waveform that remembers bits about its former self from moment to moment.

You can upload it without destroying the original if you can find a way for it to meaningfully interact with processing architecture and media that are digital in nature; and if you can do that without shutting you off. Here’s the kinky part: We can already do this. You can make a device that takes a brain signal and stimulates a remote device; and you can stimulate a brain with a digital signal. Set it up for feedback in a manner similar to the ongoing continuous feedback of our neural structures and you have now extended yourself into a digital device in a meaningful way.

Then you just keep adding to that architecture gradually, and gradually peeling away redundant bits of the original brain hardware, until most or all of you is being kept alive in the digital device instead of the meat body. To you, it’s continuous and it’s still you on the other end. Tada, consciousness uploaded.

Schmoo , to programmerhumor in "I want to live forever in AI"

If anyone’s interested in a hard sci-fi show about uploading consciousness they should watch the animated series Pantheon. Not only does the technology feel realistic, but the way it’s created and used by big tech companies is uncomfortably real.

The show got kinda screwed over on advertising and fell to obscurity because of streaming service fuck ups and region locking, and I can’t help but wonder if it’s at least partially because of its harsh criticisms of the tech industry.

i_ben_fine ,

Upload is also good.

gorgori , to memes in It's that easy!

To be honest, we are fucking up the planet at an exponentially faster rate, so it is natural that mitigation solutions seems exponentially crazier.

There are people that believe that doing these crazy things will actually reverse the damage.

Then there are people like me who not only believe we are fucked but also believe that anything we do now is completely pointless as we are fucked either way so why bother.

Risk ,

Stop. Please stop. Doomerism compounds the problem, it is not a neutral stance.

Has irreparable damage already been done? Yes.

Will it be worse if we don’t do anything as soon as possible? Yes. And each moment that we don’t do the thing, it gets a little bit worse.

But each moment we do do the thing, it gets a little bit better.

The Earth will relatively be 1.5°, likely 2°C hotter, regardless of what actions are now taken. But 2°C hotter is far, far preferable to 4°C.

Everything we do as individuals and societies matters. I understand it feels daunting, and I’m not really advocating for you to drive less or eat less meat, because ultimately these changes won’t be driven by individuals making the choices.

However, please please please support and push, protest, fight for societal changes for us collectively to drive less, eat less meat, and corporate carbon taxation.

lemmyreader OP ,

However, please please please support and push, protest, fight for societal changes for us collectively to drive less, eat less meat, and corporate carbon taxation.

You may be preaching to the choir. This year in Europe more than 50 percent of the newly bought cars were SUVs. To me that feels that most people do not care, they just want to enjoy themselves as much as possible before total collapse. Protest ? Three states in the USA recently banned protesting. In Europe with far right winning about everywhere will likely go the same direction. It is obvious in the news headlines. Fascism is on the rise and the masses do not seem to care about a burning planet and killing of everything but themselves.

Schadrach ,

Protest ? Three states in the USA recently banned protesting.

If I’m thinking about the right laws, don’t they more specifically make whoever is running the protest responsible for damages or crimes done by members of the protest if said members cannot be identified?

Risk ,

Evil triumphs when good people do nothing, but there are more good people than evil.

The trouble is, evil is great at rallying evil and demoralising good. That’s why we have to fight back.

Positive change is possible if we work together.

gorgori ,

Well you can only do so much, and a denier will come and fuck everything up. Oil and coal companies will pay billions to keep the propaganda going - that the earth is just fine.

So tired of all that. Remember the CFC issue. World got together to fight it and it worked. I don’t know if we will ever see such cooperation again. If we do, maybe we have a chance.

Other than a uniform collective action as a species we have no hope to turn this around. And since I don’t see that happening anytime soon I would rather stick to my “Doomerism”.

Risk ,

But don’t you see how doomerism contributes to the problem?

Siegfried ,

Yep, and i’m dangerously approaching this pov…

Still make efforts for the cause anyway.

Ultimatenab , to linux in You think Linux is living a Renaissance with Gaming and New Non-Technical Users?

Ditched Windows late last year and jump to Linux as my main driver. I’ve had Linux servers for years but it is completely different when it’s your main driver.

I mainly play games and from the over 100 games that I tried to play only 2 had issues and I was unable to get them working (BattleField 4 and FaF Forever).

Honestly Wine and subsequently Proton is the true game changer when it comes to games BUT I’m on an all AMD hardware and had 0 issues with driver stability, however a friend of mine on an Intel/nVidia has had a couple of issues which were eventually resolved but took a bit of wait for fixes and updates.

Gaming was absolutely the only reason I didn’t switch permanently

Switched all my machines over to Linux within a month or so of getting my steam deck and see no reason to go back

Can’t imagine I’m the only one who was waiting for this, though that said I am fairly technical, I don’t think most non technical people will see enough of a reason to switch
