neidu2 , (edited ) to asklemmy in Do your colleagues celebrate System Administrator Appreciation Day ?

No. But I am owed a beer for every project I show up to. Happens around twice per year.

Before a project that involved outfitting a survey ship headed for the Mediterranean, this conversation took place: (paraphrasing)

Me: This storage cluster is based on 10gig/s network. I don’t think the data processors will get the throughput they require.

Chief tech: I tallied up the data transfers, and the time available should suffice with 10g/s.

Me: Did you account for the fact that they duplicate the data and transfer a lot of it twice?

Chief tech: No. But I’ll tell them not to do that.

Some time goes by. Project starts, 1PB of data is collected, and processing is starting up, scheduled to complete everything shortly before they arrive back in the home port. Then my phone rings.

Project manager: Throughput speeds are too slow. Is there anything that can be done, or do we have to eat the daily fine for being too late?

Me: How much is the daily fine?

PM: (number) USD

Me: I’ll make the purchase req now for one tenth of the daily sum. That should increase the throuput.

PM: Hardware install involved?

Me: Yes. I’ll order, configure, and document everything for the chief tech to plug&play during their refuel stop.

PM: I owe you a beer for the next projects.

The extra cost wasn’t that much, considering it was the same upgrade I recommended before project startup anyway. We just had to pay for express freight from the vendor to my home, and from my home down to the ship. Long story short, it worked out. A Mellanox 2100 was shipped down to Malta, and installed by the crew, and it worked out of the box. I was worried about the extensive VLAN and LACP setup in play. But as that setup was my design, I managed to wing it when preparing this switch. I had been using the production cluster for some testing earlier, so it already had the necessary kernel modules for the 100gig cards. The processors had everything wrapped up and written to tape the day before arriving back home. The night of arrival there was a project completion dinner for the crew and us field service personnel. I drank for free that night. I don’t remember it all, except that it was fun, and that the only reason why I called it a night at 0300 was because the hotel bar was closed.

To the chief techs defense, he wasn’t that wrong. He’d made a reasonable estimate based on the numbers he had available. Unfortunately he didn’t have all the numbers, as well as give the processors some head room for fudge factor. This chief tech was mostly experienced in only providing raw dataand thus working without the processing aspect.

The only ones I see are the ones that are part of the video, like how Hugbees does it. I don’t mind that because 1) I can skip through it right away and 2) he actually makes his pretty funny

Example: The ad starts at 5:05

yeah on new pipe i can tap right side to skip ahead if the artist inputs sponsors into the video. so i suppose i do see ads just not in the “yt interruption” sense.

Lol ads. Not for years. I honestly don’t know how people do it. Maybe they are just used to it but last time I tried to use the Internet without an ad blocker I wanted to throw my computer across that room. It’s ridiculous how bad it is.

cyberpunk007 ,

Those poor souls watching multiple ads are the ones making so there’s not an even more aggressive approach to preventing our means of ad free stuff.

BlackRoseAmongThorns ,

Doubt it, the reason it got this far is because of complacency from the general populace, more complacency doesn’t let us keep our privacy and being ad free, the existence of lemmy is an example of that.

cyberpunk007 ,

I know, it was a joke.

I truly don’t mean to be pedantic here, but aren’t these nearly word for word the same beliefs Left-leaning people here have about the Right in America?

Maybe if you’re being generous and want to write out the other side of these beliefs you could leave out the descriptors “lazy and weak” and replace them with “psychotic and brainwashed”, but other than that, is this meme not the same for Left and Right?

Hegar , to memes in He who controls the spice controls the rules-based order.
@Hegar@kbin.social avatar

It is quite funny that we call our empire rules based order. Athens was also known for using a lot of euphemisms.

Something about pretending that an imperial democracy is a legit thing that can exist seems to make you want to lie to yourself.

anaisrim ,
@anaisrim@kbin.run avatar

What's your alternative when Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea actively seek their own colonialism?

davel OP ,
@davel@lemmy.ml avatar

We need this imperial order to protect us from imaginary imperial orders.

📽️

anaisrim ,
@anaisrim@kbin.run avatar

There's nothing imaginary about Russia's invasion and attempted annexation of Ukraine. Nothing imaginary about China's wish to take all of Taiwan against the wishes of the Taiwanese. Nothing imaginary about belligerent threats by North Korea against South Korea and Japan. Nothing imaginary about Iran's conduct either. North Korea and Iran ship arms to Russia in support of Ukraine's annexation. As does China trade with Russia for the same purpose.

OurToothbrush ,

Nothing imaginary about belligerent threats by North Korea against South Korea and Japan.

The US conducts the largest invasion exercise in the world in South Korea, every single year. WTF are you talking about, calling the DPRK the aggressor? They’re literally demonstrating that they can strike back if they’re invaded.

vzq ,

You seem to have a tenuous grasp on reality.

Hegar ,
@Hegar@kbin.social avatar

What's your alternative when Russia, China, Iran, and North Korea actively seek their own colonialism?

Why does the existence of multiple evils make you want to defend one particular evil? Why not mention our brutal, murderous or genocidal allies like Saudi or Israel?

Our empire created the problem that is iran, our invasion of iraq showed putin that empires can still destroy foreign countries with no comeuppance, our lack of imperial interests in africa gives russia room to stoke violence and war unchallenged, our antagonism to china encourages them to prop-up NK as a buffer state against our client state on the korean penisula and that same antagonism is driving china to a more belligerent position.

I'm not trying to say that everything is our fault - obviously all those countries are responsible for their fair share of vile behaviour - but our empire has actively contributed to how bad those situations are. All countries are vermin, the more powerful the greater the capacity for evil - and we're the most powerful.

Of course I don't have a step-by-step program to a better world, but it's pretty obvious that we're a big part of the problem and an alternative is needed.

anaisrim ,
@anaisrim@kbin.run avatar

The point is, that rules based system - as flawed as it may be - represents a check against those countries I list currently trying to annex new lands by force.

arymandias ,

The point is, there is no rules based order. The rules only apply to the global south, the US has explicitly stated they will bomb or invade The Netherlands if the ICC ever prosecutes a US citizen. It’s just another cynical tool of power projection.

davel OP ,
@davel@lemmy.ml avatar
OurToothbrush ,

Loling at calling China, Iran, or North Korea colonialist.

Taking the most extreme example, how l the fuck could North Korea be colonialist? They also literally changed their foreign policy to abandoned the project of reunification with the Southern puppet regime.

anaisrim ,
@anaisrim@kbin.run avatar

"Southern Puppet Regime"

Anyway, they appear interested in war with South Korea again. And they're shipping arms and ammunition to Russia, which has wound up usef in both Ukraine and by Hamas.

OurToothbrush , (edited )

“Southern Puppet Regime”

Yes, the regime that was a military dictatorship all the way into the 80s, whose military is literally under command of US pacific command during war time, who need US permission to fly their imported fighters in peacetime, and who don’t have free speech when it comes to talking about the DPRK

Anyway, they appear interested in war with South Korea again.

Ahahahahah. Source? One that isnt funded by a billionaire or a government in service to billionaires please.

And they’re shipping arms and ammunition to Russia, which has wound up usef in both Ukraine and by Hamas.

Hmm, sounds like they sell weapons to groups that oppose the US empire, whether they are regional imperial powers or they’re liberation groups.

That doesn’t make them colonialist, lmao.

China

Talk to me about Tibet and that very cool and very legal 9 dash line

OurToothbrush ,

Do you prefer the old fuedal regime which often treated serfs as slaves to the current autonomous region that a China helped to liberate after a local uprising by Tibetans?

Godric ,

Oh, they invaded and annexed a country because they were backwards and needed civilizing, thank you for the clarification. “Better off under us than before” is probably the #1 imperialism cope bud

OurToothbrush , (edited )

The people there didn’t “need civilizing” the government needed overthrowing, and Tibetans literally started the process and asked for Chinese assistance.

Next you’ll tell me saying that the Confederacy being destroyed and integrated back into the union at the end of the Civil War was “imperialist”

I’m begging you to actually understand what imperialism is. Imperialism is not integrating another country by itself, it involves specific financially extractive structures which are absent in the relationship you describe.

That actually works to my favor for podcasts. I download everything on wifi so I don’t have to use data, and the audio player audipo shows the waveform of the audio. So when the ad sections come up it’s easy to see how far to skip.

Your comment makes me giggle that there’s a possible future where PornHub admins are getting angry at influencers for uploading wholesome content, in violation of the site Terms of Service.

Edit: I hope the headline reads, “PornHub has issued a press release - naming an account MrBeastPhilanthropy194768 isn’t fooling anyone, and they need to take their charitable fundraising to a more appropriate platform.”

I still think most sites would struggle dealing with the stream of people continually uploading full episodes of copyrighted works, as well as finding a profitable revenue stream for all the bandwidth used. Even YouTube has a hard time with it.
