Its always been about waking the people up. First it was showing the people an ideal version of themselves. Then it was about showing the people a version of themselves who had quibbles but never gave up. Then it was about showing the people the kinds of monster people can become when their moral character was neglected. Now? Its about showing the people they’re seen. Showing them we understand each other and can have solidarity.

Comics aren’t just woke. They haven’t just always been woke. They’re an alarm clock ticking down to our collective awakening

LaunchesKayaks , to asklemmy in What is an event that altered you in some way?
@LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world avatar

Negative experience: got half my face ripped off by a dog as a kid. I’m scared of almost all dogs now and I panic around heelers.

Positive experience: going to college. I’m considerably successful because I decided to go on a whim lol.

cashmaggot OP ,

Hope you're doing okay and face is healed up as much as you want it to be. Tbh, dogs freak me out too. Which is a shame, because I dig them in theory. But in actuality, I am not really here for two of the major pets of this world. Which is a shit situation to be in, and I can't even imagine how shit it must be now that everyone's out here taking their dogs around everywhere. I hope you've got some solid help =/!

Get that college money =)! It's big. You know, idk if you're family promoted it or anything but it really does seem to be the secret to stability. I mean, you might not be a Rockefeller. But it really does help expand your chances for a better life.

@LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world avatar

Thank you for the encouragement.

One of the best child plastic surgeons happened to be in town when I got attacked and he took my case. Can’t even tell anything happened. He did a GREAT job.

As for college and making money, I’m not family oriented per se (I don’t want kids and I’m single ATM), but I have pets (2 dogs, 2 cats, and 11 ducks) and I want to buy a horse eventually at the stables I volunteer at. The horse is a few years off because boarding is expensive, but it’s an obtainable goal lol. Just gotta get promoted, which I am working towards with the guidance of my boss and the owner/president of the company.

cashmaggot OP ,

Yooo! You're treating your dog thing by HAVING DOGS! Hahahaha, I love it! I wish I could get behind either. Dogs kinda freak me out, because I have sensory issues with drool and I hate sudden noises. And cats, I'm just unfortunately allergic. But never really dug them, because one scratched up my face as a little ninja. Ducks though, that's something different. My friend from Ohio is the only other person I know who's had them. Two to be exact. But that's really something different.

Sounds like you've got land, which is a nice thing to have. And time, which is also good stuff. I don't know too much about horses, but my partner says there's a primal connection between horses and humans. Says there's nothing like riding a horse on this planet. Gotta be wonderful. Sounds like you're in a good space. Perhaps consider finding a mentee, so that you can share going both ways. There's a lot of wonderful individuals inside of organizations who might have the fixins for greater but get stuck because they can't seem to get a leg up. If you can think of anyone in that boat, consider reaching out and forming a relationship. This is going to sound absolutely awful, but I think being a mentor looks quite good as well. Because it requires a series of characteristics which are desirable in the world of business. But it also is a solid act, because you get to repay the favor that someone might have lent to you. Either way, I hope you enjoy your horse when you get them a couple of years down the road =)!

LaunchesKayaks ,
@LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world avatar

Your partner is totally right about horses. I had a mare growing up that knew my my depression was getting bad and did her best to cheer me up. There’s a horse I love at the stables I volunteer at who is similar. She knows when I’m down or frustrated or whatever and demands attention lol. Hopefully she stays that way once she has her foal and doesn’t become a hella protective mama lol

cashmaggot OP ,

Is she who you plan on purchasing down the line? I'm not sure entirely how it works. Yeah, my gal loves horses. Loves skateboarding more. Maybe someday I'll get on one? Maybe not. Either way, it's cool. I think I might have missed my chance a hundred years ago and not even thought about it cause I knew someone who went to school for it. Instead I just hung with the horse folk, and we drank some of the most heinous alcohol known to man. Was chill though.

LaunchesKayaks ,
@LaunchesKayaks@lemmy.world avatar

I would love to buy her tbh, but idek who actually owns her lol. Most of the horses I interact with don’t get the attention they deserve from their actual owners. Seems like most owners there don’t actually come around too often. It’s a full service stables, so you pay a monthly bill to have your horse fed, watered, and their stall mucked. You just have to worry about the mandatory vet visits and hiring a carrier for their hooves.

The horse people I grew up around also had the most heinous alcohol as well lmao.

I have become very tiresome with how those mods seems to be on some sort of power trip

In my experience, that’s only on lemmy.ml and maybe one or two other instances. If you go there, just know the entire vibe there is (seemingly) “westerners bad, liberals bad, all hail communism cause capitalism is a western liberal ideal!” or some other variation of that whole backwards ideology.

There’s a couple instances that have their heads so far up their own asses that they’ve become their own Adam’s Apple, and those ones are usually just mods going on power trips because someone called them a bad name.

Ultimately this place is hardly different than reddit, aside from not being a corporate megastructure that will sell your post history to the highest bidder (but that might change, so stay vigilant). You’ll learn what instances/subcommunities are worth seeing–and which ones are best avoided–in time.

I mean,that’s all there is to say really. I know the fediverse is broken up into different, interconnected domains, but literally any one of them could be monetized by their domain owner. Obviously we would all just block that domain/move to another, but it’s not an impossibility.

Mostly I’m just saying, “don’t get complacent, they could always pull the rug from under us.”

menemen , to asklemmy in What is an event that altered you in some way?

To add some positivity to all those sad stories: For me the most dramatic life changing event was the birth of my first child. Suddenly (okay, we knew for a few months, but it still feld like “suddenly”) we weren’t just a couple, we were a family.

100% the best thing in my life.

cashmaggot OP ,

I have heard, although you know - not happening here as far as I know, that the birth of your first child is a wonderful event that sort of cements you into this larger web of the magic and mysteries of life. I've had two friends who recently had births, one who is doing quite well and the other who is struggling. But the both of them seem to be happier overall with their decisions. And the one who is struggling sort of has this struggle with or without the babe. So we always knew it was a possibility and the best thing that I can say is that the awareness and the love have truly helped them navigate the space they're in.

Congratulations btw, I am glad you're happy =)

menemen ,

It’s been ten years and we’ve got two now, but I think you can still congratulate. :)

cashmaggot OP ,

Hahaha! If I had em, two would be it. That'd be the number. Cause the first one can guide the second one, and the second one can guide the first one. But it's funny cause I've been watching Dr. Katz - and the thing is there's this guy who talks about having kids. He says the first one is life-changing. The second one, you're not sure if you can love them as much as the first and the truth is - you end up loving them almost as much and it's right there. Then the third one comes along...

I’m going to speculate you have some issues with power delivery. Are you in an older home or get hit with brown/black outs? Could be under or over voltage by enough to burn through them. I have used dollar store bulbs all the way to hue branded bulbs. I might have had one die early from dozens in 2 different properties.

solrize , (edited ) to nostupidquestions in ELI5: how do mobile devices know your movements?

Step counters use the phone accelerometers which the phone also uses to notice its own orientation. They measure longer distances with GPS. I haven’t yet seen a phone that can detect your heart rate by itself. Some wristwatches/fitness bands do it using an electrical sensor (electromyograph) on your wrist, and send the info to your phone by Bluetooth.

markpaskal ,

I think one of the Pixels or one of the old nexus devices could read heart rate through the camera somehow, but you had to put a big fingerprint on the lense so it was useless to most people.

Irremarkable ,
@Irremarkable@fedia.io avatar

Samsung phones used to be able to measure heart rate along with blood oxygenation. Not sure when they stopped, but I know one of my old galaxy's had it, either the 5 or 8.

I think it had to do with how the cameras and lights were oriented. I missed that one too. Pretty damn accurate.

Beacon , to nostupidquestions in What is the secret to making LED light bulbs last as long as the package says?

I've never had to replace an LED bulb, ever. They last forever if there isn't a problem with your installation, like poor electrical wiring or poor ventilation

Blue_Morpho ,

That’s unusual. I have ones that lasted 10 years but they eventually go. It’s usually the driver circuit, not the led itself.

wjrii ,

Exactly. LEDs are rated for 10k hours. 10-15 watt power supplies made both to cram into a tiny space defined by GE 100 years ago for a completely different lighting technology, and to hit a $2.00 price point for the whole assembly? Not so much.

I’ve actually got a super cheap and super bright LED in my garage that has been working for a long time, but it’s one of those big ugly sunflower looking ones that would never fit in an enclosed fixture anyway, so it actually lets the power supply breathe. Even then, I’m sure it’s putting out more lumens than is good for whatever half-assed components and heat sink are in it.

Beacon , (edited )

The first LED I bought is about 7 years old at this point, so that tracks. I was being hyperbolic when i said "forever", they aren't designed to last literally forever, i just meant many many many years

southsamurai , to asklemmy in Are there any workouts that men shouldn't do?
@southsamurai@sh.itjust.works avatar

Nah, there’s no such thing as an exercise that does what you’re asking.

Ignoring the bullshit involved in gender norms, and ignoring the variances in different cultures, a cis man that went through male puberty isn’t ever going to have the kind of body that would be considered feminine, on average, by exercise. Too much of what is considered feminine depends on boobs and hips. Boobs can’t be exercised into existence, and you aren’t going to change your skeleton enough to have the kind of hips that truly feminize a silhouette.

A cis man can definitely achieve androgynous looks, and can also shape their body to emphasize curves and such, but not by exercise.

Also, if your dick/balls are squishing, try different undies. You need better support, imo. My best friend is what you might call compact in frame, and is hung like a damn bull moose, but can do any exercise he wants because he has good support via well fitting undies. There’s no single recommendation as per brand or style, but he’s a briefs guy. I’ve worn boxer briefs for decades, and never had any issues when they were in good condition (though once they get a year or so of use, they loosen too much for comfort because the old frank n beans slide down the leg)

gpstarman OP ,

gpstarman OP ,

V shape with a small middle was idealized by bodybuilders?

I think it is due to how it will make their upper torso look massive compared to the small waist.

Thank you.

TheFriar ,

any cis man that went through male puberty isn’t ever going to have the kind of body that would be considered feminine

Not necessarily true. I’m a cis male and I’ve always had a slender waist. If I really dedicated my workout to legs and glutes and just abominable with none of the side stomach muscles (I’m pretty new to working out and don’t know the words) and I completely disregarded my upper body, my body would start to look more feminine. My body stores fat on my hips too, so no cardio? Yeah, I’d have one sexy lady bod.
