You forgot Texas

Phegan ,

I learned recently that the theme park “six flags” is short for six flags over Texas. One of those flags is the Confederate flag. They are celebrating being under the Confederate flag…at a theme park.

Maggoty ,

To be fair it’s nowhere near the normal lost cause stuff. The other flags are Spain, Mexico, France, Texas, and the United States. They aren’t specifically calling it out, it’s just there, as one of the flags that flew over Texas.

TwoBeeSan ,

Yeah. Never seen a confederate flag over the park itself.

BorgDrone , to mildlyinfuriating in I need new glasses. The only insurance-approved place I can shop online will cost $250 with my needs. I went to a "cheap" glasses website that doesn't accept insurance: $250. Yay, America.

$250 for glasses like that is very cheap. I also have bifocals, not the thinnest lenses either, IIRC they were one step up from the standard ones. A light frame but nothing special, the frame was like €100, the entire set of glasses was around €650. The lenses only have a cylinder in them; no prisms or anything like that. If you need more complicated or stronger/thin lenses they can easily go over €1000.

Even if you have the optional insurance for it, that doesn’t really help you. The amount they cover is basically the same amount you pay for the additional coverage. You’re better off putting the money in a savings account earmarked for your next set of glasses.

Also, if you need anything but the most basic single focus lenses without any cylinders or prisms, get them at a real optician. The online store can’t properly measure where to place the lenses in the frame (they need to be properly centered in front of your pupils).

Meron35 , to lemmyshitpost in Stretching

I’ve been thinking about it for several days, and have come to the conclusion that Elastigirl could indeed grow a dick. As shown in multiple scenes, she can stretch any part of her body to make it many times larger. Based on what she has done, it should be no problem for her to extend her genitals into a penis. This brings us to the second discussion point. Mr. Incredible has super-strength, and more importantly, super endurance. This means that his wife could easily expand her dick to several yards in length. The problem of fitting in into Bob’s tight asshole could easily be solved by inserting it while small, and ballooning up afterwards. I think the writers made them have these Specific powers on purpose. It seems unlikely that it is a coincidence that Helen has the ability to grow a massive dick, and her husband just so happens to have an indestructible anus. Therefore I conclude that not only does Elastigirl have the biggest dick in the world, she bones Mr. Incredible with it on a regular basis. And because it is a girl and a guy, it is by definition, not gay

BrightCandle , to startrek in Is the Federation "Communist" or Socialist?

There are capitalist elements. The Picard family still owns a farm and farm house and pass it down generations. There is still some concept of money being used by humans who are pursing payments for rare and stolen goods. Most of what we see around Starfleet is merit driven people working in starfleet out of self interest but the ships appear to be owned by Starfleet and they seem to have some democractic structure. Since most basic needs are met via replicators it seems they are post scarcity and trips to the doctors seem free but is not really socialism in the sense of people owning the means of production, there doesn’t seem to be much of anything said about how these ships get built and the implication is its a lot of automation but there seem to be a lot of facilities on Earth with people in them like Starfleet academy and in bars. We have no idea how factories work in this world other than on other planets and people work in them.

I don’t think its brilliantly clear, there are a mix of ideologies on display and what makes it hang together is the humans are all behaving well, which isn’t very human nature like at all. People don’t seem to own what they are working with in all cases but they do in some of the smaller settlements so its a bit of a mix dependent on circumstances.

MrSaturn OP ,
@MrSaturn@startrek.website avatar

Yeah I agree

bloubz ,

Owning your farm is not contradictory to communism, if it’s not exploitative. Money as well

Working democracy would indeed be a good giveaway that this is communism, but do we have hints that it is really democratic?

Anticorp ,

what makes it hang together is the humans are all behaving well, which isn’t very human nature like at all

That’s the entire point, is that humanity has grown beyond its destructive nature. Picard talks about it at length with Q, and it was one of Roddenberry’s central visions. That’s why the new “gritty” shows bother me so much, because they’re a slap in the face to Roddenberry’s vision.

GustavoM , to linux in Switching back to Windows. For now.
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

To use Linux properly, you’ve got to “unlearn” everything you know about computers and go back from the ground-up. And breaking yourself free from bad habits (that only Windows gives you) such as relying on installers to do the job for you – i.e “double-clicking your cares away”. Which can be a fun experience when compiling (The “turbo nerd way” to install things on linux) becomes “second nature”, giving you the ability to taste “true freedom” of making (pretty much) anything work the way as you may seem fit.

No, really. You’ll have a heck of a nerdgasm when you compile something that is not “normally supported” on an obscure pc/distro. You will feel like a demigod.

t. That is how I felt the first time I compiled a half-life openBSD port… on Linux. I did it “by following my gut” and everything “werked”.

another ,

I like clicking my problems away.

GustavoM ,
@GustavoM@lemmy.world avatar

Relying on easy, simple stuff does not (always) mean a good thing let alone being good for you and your mental health. Even less so allowing proprietary, capitalism-driven developers to do whatever they want with your PC (which makes me wonder what you are even doing in this community in first place if you just “don’t care”), but hey… you do you.
