Me too. I love XFCE so much, but it’s impossible to deny how large a step forwards Wayland is on a technical level (although there are still kinks to work out). When XFCE moves over, I’ll be able to confidently do so as well.
I’m in the same boat. For a long time I was a RHEL admin at work, and ran Ubuntu at home. Three years ago my workplace switched to Ubuntu servers, and at home I switched to Manjaro. Now I’m sick of Manjaro, and want to move to something else for home use. I’ve been looking at NixOS and Void, both seem pretty cool in their own way.
Are there community packages like the arch repos? I’ve come to rely on those in Manjaro, like I rely on 3rd party PPAs in Ubuntu.

I got started with Manjaro because I was looking for an Arch-like experience, but with better distro management, curated packages, etc. I’ve had some of my best PC gaming experiences on Manjaro with Luttis and Proton, it is a great Linux gaming distro.The distro managers have definitely let me down more than once, most notably when they wouldn’t ship KDE Plasma 5.25 when it was released citing “stability concerns”, and then doing the same thing with Plasma 5.27. But those issues are behind us, and didn’t affect me too badly (I just needed to wait 6 weeks until the next release to get my updates). I’ve come to realise through my use of Manjaro that I actually always want to use it like Arch. Often things I want to install are not available in the Manjaro repos, but are available on AUR. Then installing from AUR sometimes depends on things that are not in Manjaro repos. It gets messy, and I should just use Arch.
But rather than moving to Arch, I think I am itching to move to something completely different, and NixOS and Void are about as different as it gets.
If you find yourself typing a long comment that might have contradictions or presents several options, you should consider shortening it so that it only contains the most important point. Save the rest for follow up conversations. This makes a better conversation for several reasons besides voting.
Fair enough. I can see how I could save myself time and effort. However, I’ve read many long comments in the past that are very interesting. And, considering the 90-9-1 rule, I suppose this happens to other people too.
Pop_OS!, a popular Linux distribution, is writing a new desktop environment. A desktop environment is basically the functionality of the desktop, think the taskbar and window snapping, etc. on Windows and the dock and top bar on macOS. A desktop environment also comes with its own set of apps, like how Windows comes with Explorer and Task Manager.
It’s hard to tell without a circuitry layout, but my best guess is that there’s probably capacitors in the power brick acting as an electrical filtration for the motors to make them operate smoothly and reliably.
The capacitors are probably discharging some electricity that are keeping some circuit protective device alive. Unplugging the power brick is probably the only true way to completely remove electricity from the unit.
Oh that does make sense. So if I unplug the unit from the wall outlet side and just wait it should also work? In theory I just need to wait long enough for the power brick to discharge completely. I’ll try that next time. Thank you!
It’s just a theory based off of my own experience, but if that’s the issue, it kinda depends on how large the capacitors are and what kind of capacity they’re capable of holding.
If it is the issue, I’d expect it to take like 5 minutes for it to discharge completely, but that’s just a guess. If everything is already out of its usual place, you could probably test it if you’re curious enough.

Because of the large capacitors, voltage from the power brick kinda “ramps up” when it is plugged into the wall. The device/its MCU/most specifically its clock circuit however prefers a hard edge of power being turned on, to reliably trigger its power on reset circuit/oscillator.
You can think of it similar to a pendulum/newton’s cradle/metronome - they also prefer one decisive push to get going reliably.
Unplugging the brick for a longer time is still worth a try, but it could also be this.
Technically taxes are due quarterly in the US, so they have plenty to do if they have business or self employed customers. My dad was a tax preparer and would file tons of extensions in April and finish them up until August. Then start on the next year.
Yes, there’s been a mass exodus, but while that term sounds like it means most reddit users have left, it just means a large group of them did. Certainly not most or all.
It’s happening in waves. Evey time a big change happens, a group of users see that as the last straw and leave. This killing of second-party apps was my the last straw for me, while most users probably don’t care enough to do that.
For me as well. Third party app was the reason that made the use enjoyable. I’m curious how it will be when sync for lemmy is online. I think Mastodon and Lemmy will both grow, but it is organic growth so it will likely take years. Anyway I already like the community more here.
True. And while the comment section still gets several thousand participating, it’ll keep people’s attention.
One thing I miss is reading a comment section for over sn hour because it was almost endless entertainment. Hopefully Lemmy can provide some of that golden content.
I don’t think I fit either side of this dichotomy (though if forced to pick would choose extrinsically), as I love a good story but am very much about the journey and not just the destination.
If I had to guess, the limits of development scope and the resulting limits on worlds being believably reactive means a lot of people are going to see themselves as extrinsically motivated, with the big exception being people that just love building things in sandboxes. Intrinsic motivators would be much easier to come across if more avenues of interaction felt fleshed out but for some rare exceptions.
Syncthing. I don’t want to invest into a NAS and put some load into my already greedy power bill, so I chose something decentralized. Syncthing really just works like Torrent but for your personal files: Whatever happens on the computer, also does on the phone, and on the laptop. Each have about 1TB of space and 3 times redundancy? Hell yea buddy dig in.
I just found out about syncthing yesterday and it really is superb, it’s so easy to use even crossplatform. unison is another syncing tool that I like, I find it better for bidirectional syncing
Yes but it is a automated backup solution if you want it to. I just put important stuff in the Syncthing folder and rest assured its also on the phone incase the computers SSD caughs fire.
I think you are confusing synchronizing with backup. If you delete a file in your Syncthing folder and the deletion gets synchronized, that file is lost. If you do the same in a folder backed up by, say, Borg, you can roll back the deletion and restore the file.
I may be wrong about Syncthing, though. I haven’t used it yet, but will probably use it in the future. Just not for backup :)
This is true if you leave it at defaults but I make use of file versioning. When you flick that one on, files that are otherwise replaced or deleted will actually move to a offline .stversions folder. That is very vital I must say in case a host catches some encryptor malware eheh
I didn’t know that was a possibility. Still, it seem kind of not really what Syncthing is intended for. I mean, they even state it in their FAQ:
No. Syncthing is not a great backup application because all changes to your files (modifications, deletions, etc.) will be propagated to all your devices. You can enable versioning, but we encourage you to use other tools to keep your data safe from your (or our) mistakes.
NixOS is not going to give you ease of use. It requires a lot of learning. If you want to do anything not already supported by NixOS options, you’ll have to do some work.
