There are two things that still fascinate my adult mind. How things looked in the past and how they’d look in future once they are abandoned.

lustyargonian , to gaming in What’s one of your favorite game soundtracks?

Not OST but I really vibed with Fallout 3 radio. It was cool to learn about old songs from that game.

mfat , to selfhosted in Thank you for all the help!

Does matrix support video calls? Our family uses Google Meet for group calls. Been thinking of a self-hosted alternative.

I don’t think it does, but take a look at Jitsi Meet! It’s very good

russjr08 ,
@russjr08@outpost.zeuslink.net avatar

You can get the best of both worlds actually. Matrix supports doing video calls through Jitsi Meet!

I want to say that for 1-to-1 calls it does video natively, and for group video calls it uses Jitsi Meet.

2xsaiko ,

Oh, very cool!

Shiimiish OP ,
@Shiimiish@lm.ainyataovi.net avatar

I use Synapse as the Matrix server and Element as client on desktop and mobile. It does support video calls, but so far I only tested it for a minute.

pete ,

It's pretty solid for 1:1 calls, and they are currently working on Matrix's own conferencing protocol/solution.
But until then you could set up a Jitsi Meet instance along with Matrix to run multiple user calls.

pete ,

Plus, Jitsi Meet will allow you publicly available video conferencing which is really nice to have on its own. ;-)

mfat ,

I once tried. Too difficult for my technical knowledge. Or maybe the server was not powerful enough. Just 1 GB of RAM.

WildlyCanadian , to linux in Do you use an antivirus? Why, or why not?
@WildlyCanadian@lemmy.ca avatar

I don’t use antivirus on Windows, let alone Linux. Just be mindful of what you’re downloading and you’ll be fine.

skomposzczet ,

Same here. Ever since I remember I don’t have AV, just staying out of sketchy sites is enough. Most of malware is targeted at the least aware and cautious users.

MJBrune ,

Windows has done of the best antivirus built-in

luthis , to asklemmy in If you were given control of all products owned by Facebook, what would you do with them?

End all advertising/tracking etc, and charge people $1 per month to use it, or $12 annual fee.

BURN , to conservative in How would you feel about a government-funded social media platform that was required to support free speech?

Is this so you can spew more transphobic content without getting banned?

Government run social media would be awful. There’s not a single upside to it. Everyone would be unhappy on that platform. Moderation would have to be so strict that it would stifle any conversation, and I guarantee one political side at all times would be yelling about how they’re being censored more than the other. Without moderation it’ll turn into a far right cesspool like every other unmoderated social media is.

Also why would I hand my data directly to a government that I don’t trust? At least now they have to go through other companies and 3rd parties.

dudebro OP ,

I think you have me confused with someone else.

BURN ,

Definitely don’t. Checked and I’ve downvoted multiple transphobic comments from you.

dudebro OP ,

Hm, you must not know what you’re talking about then.

I’m sorry you feel that way, but have a nice day.

Honestly, I just go through Dreamhost since I have my hosting there anyway or Route 53, since they have full DNS customisation options.

AProfessional , to linux in Do you use an antivirus? Why, or why not?

Run sandboxed software when possible and avoid doing unsafe things.

There is no useful AV for Linux desktops.

PlutoniumAcid , to nostupidquestions in Does the Lemmy / Kbin (Fediverse) have more helpful content than Reddit?
@PlutoniumAcid@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, sort of: there are few comments but they are much more helpful.

No, sort of: there are fewer helpful comments because there are fewer comments in the first place.

But I prefer a small nice room than a large bad one.

Pixel 7 Pro and a Samsung Gear S3 watch (that I hope to upgrade to Galaxy 6 Classic)
The only thing I really miss about my samsung phones (s4, s8, s10e) is that the screen was a whole lot brighter (could see just fine at 50% brightness most of the time, whereas my Pixel requires it to be 80 and up) and that while I prefer dark themes, I really don’t like the ‘white print on black’ because the contrast bothers me. Samsung Themes had all kinds of different colors. Also the size was a lot to get used to, but thats common on just about all flagships now

bitcrafter , to asklemmy in What are some useful or just cool stuff to memorize?

For day-to-day purposes, if you are used to Fahrenheit but not Celsius or vice versa, and all you want to do is get a rough sense of how warm or cold it is outside without having to do arithmetic involving fractions in your head, then remember that there are two temperatures in Celsius that are roughly the same in Fahrenheit but with their digits transposed: 16° C ~ 61° F, and 28° C ~ 82° F. You can then roughly interpolate/extrapolate by about 2° F for every 1° C.

Anticorp ,

Also freezing is 0 in Celsius, so 32f is 0c. That one always helps me. Not as useful for converting c to f.

BURN , to showerthoughts in Why the fuck do cars still have analog speedometers? Surely digital ones would be more accurate and much easier to read without looking away from the road for too long.

TBH I hate screens in my car and am trying to buy one without one (which seems impossible now)

Analog is less likely to fail, imo easier to read and is cheaper to service. There’s also the fact that the majority of drivers have had analog speedometers their entire life and getting rid of them will turn some drivers off of buying the car

Look for a local hackerspace, they might have the right connections. Most of them have regular (often weekly) ‘social nights’ where you can hang out.
