Alan Wake Remastered. I bounced off of this when I was a kid playing on the 360, but I wanted to go back and give it another try in anticipation of Alan Wake 2. Also sprinkling in some Midnight Fight Express and Rollerdrome.

Looking forward to Baldur’s Gate 3 and Lords of the Fallen.

Pechente , to technology in Bitwarden or Proton Pass

Bitwarden has better features and more clients are available for it. Proton Pass doesn’t offer anything that Bitwarden does not except for a slightly nicer looking browser extension and mobile client.

I have access to both and tested them recently, so I think I got a pretty good picture of them both.

mkhopper , to nostupidquestions in Can I view a list of the communities of a lemmy instance while logged into my own?
@mkhopper@lemmy.world avatar

Yes, you could just go to startrek.website/communities for the list of communities on that particular instance.
However, subscribing to a community on an instance where you do not have an account takes a few extra steps.

When looking at the list of communities on another instance where you do not have an account, clicking the Subscribe link from the list will result in a popup stating that you’re not logged in and if you click on the community name, a Subscribe button will not be shown.
However, most, if not all, communities will have instructions in the sidebar for how to subscribe from your main instance without the need for creating an account on the instance where that community resides.

To do this using the example of the startrek.website instance, if you wish to subscribe to the daystrominstitute community, you would enter “!daystrominstitute” into the search field on your main Lemmy instance where you are logged in.
Generally the first item in the results will be a link back to that community, which will look like:
“Daystrom [email protected] - 448 subscribers”
Click that link and you will see the content of that community again, but now notice that a Subscribe button will be shown in the sidebar.
Clicking Subscribe may result in a note that says “Subscribe pending”, which I believe is due to some syncing that needs to occur between instances. Just give it a few minutes and then that community will appear in your list of subscribed communities.
You can now read, post and reply to that community just as if you had an account on that instance.

Yeah that was already what I was doing. I was just curious if there was a more streamlined way. Thanks!

TWeaK ,

If you go to the federation map website, you can set your home instance and then browse all the comms from other instances then click the link to go to your instance’s version of it.

Edit: this is what I was referring to: lemmyverse.net/communities

SeeJayEmm ,
@SeeJayEmm@lemmy.procrastinati.org avatar

@theothermatt_b discovered this yesterday and it 100% solves the problem. Just keep in mind that if you click through a link from here to a community that your home server is not yet aware of, you may get an error page. This is, unfortunately, normal and OK. Wait a moment for the behind the scenes federation work to complete and reload the page.

Yes exactly, it needs to be built in, but this is better than nothing!

AlGoreRhythm , to technology in Bitwarden or Proton Pass

The hard on’s y’all get for password managers, and the Firefox circlejerks is baffling. Leads me to believe these “federated” instances have a double entendre everyone glosses over because of their shiny new toys.

minishoemaze ,

I use random passwords for every account and using a password manager is the best way I’ve found to manage that. Is there another method that you prefer?

AlGoreRhythm ,

I get it, and they definitely make things easier on people. But how many times have we seen instances of people abusing their custodial privileges? My gripe is with the push I’ve seen to get people using these tools, more than the existence of them in general. Mnemonic techniques to remember your passwords will always be superior from a security perspective. It’s the same as crypto, “not your keys, not your coins.”

minishoemaze ,

That’s a good point, thanks for explaining. Something I try to remember is that you not only have to trust the company who’s managing your data, but you also have to trust them to protect it from bad actors.

I’m trusting Bitwarden for now, but eventually I’d like to move to a self-hosted option like Vaultwarden. I think that’s the best way to go if you’re confident in administering it.

joey ,

Mnemonic techniques are okay, but won’t you have to come up with a different one for every service you use? I mean if there’s a pattern, then a breach in any one of them could compromise all your passwords.

I myself use mnemonic password for my master password. And I’ve started to make my passwords longer randomly generated ones. I use a file based password manager as well. I think that’s a good mix of security and convenience.

orphiebaby , to nostupidquestions in Is it unethical to troll arrogant people?
@orphiebaby@lemmy.world avatar

Sometimes strongly-opinionated people (such as myself) are misunderstood as “arrogant”. In the end, you need a lot more information and context on a person than just a few of their paragraphs to judge that. I’ll say though that arrogance and lack of empathy go hand-in-hand, so that’s one way to tell if they’re arrogant.

Either way, if you give people permission to troll “arrogant people”, then you are telling them that it’s okay to judge others before you know them. And of course that’s the source of a ton of society’s garbage. Not to mention everyone’s always in the process of learning and maturing. Nobody’s perfect; and to be an ass to others is hypocritical, even if the area you’re judging them for isn’t the one you struggle with yourself.

rdh , to technology in I’m considering setting up a server for various uses, advice?
@rdh@midwest.social avatar

Yeah, a pi could probably do that, I know everything except the fediverse instance will work, and the fediverse instance may, I’ve just never tried it, so I don’t know!

One suggestion I’d make is this: A lot of tutorials these days will have you set things up in Docker. Docker is a great tool, and at some point in your journey you should learn how to use it, but it does sort of abstract away a lot of the services you’re running.

@MangoPenguin@lemmy.blahaj.zone avatar

Do you have a 7th gen or newer Intel CPU with an iGPU? Quicksync might work for that.

corroded OP ,

Unfortunately, my CPU does not support quicksync; I’m using dual E5-2650v2s in the server that hosts Jellyfin. It’s been a while since I researched it, but I believe that Haswell was the first architecture with quicksync; my CPUs are Ivy Bridge. I’ve been wanting to upgrade for a while, but it really comes down to the fact that it runs all of my VMs and containers just fine, and there’s always somewhere else I find to spend my money.

Regardless, the Jellyfin docs say that tone mapping is only supported via CUDA, which would mean I couldn’t use quicksync anyway.

I’m doing it as VM running in truenas, it works perfect. The LAN nic is shared between host and OpnSense and the wan is passed through to the VM as hardware.

It’s much better than my USG4 pro, so that is next to the server turned off

Arrayrepairman , to selfhosted in OPNsense virtualization

I have PF sense virtualized with no issues.

Arrayrepairman ,

A bit more about mine now that I have a little more time, it’s a VM on vmWare, it has two virtual interfaces, on on my DMZ vlan, and the other is a trunk with the rest of my vlans. With the *sense, I have 2 phisical I terfaces, and then virtual interfaces that correspond to the VLANs. My router is plugged into my switch on an access port for the DMZ, and the ESXi hosts are connected to the switch with VLAN trunks. This allows me to migrate the router to another host for reboots.
