Or find and replace all the periods with ones that are slightly larger font.

Hey this is pretty timely! Just yesterday (a few hours after this post) I released a new version to hopefully fix this stuff. Please let me know if everything is working for you or if you ever see this error again!

Basically each instance has a list of all languages it knows about (“all languages”), instance admins can chose which languages people are allowed to use (“discussion languages”), on top of that community moderators can further restrict which languages people can use in their community, and further still you can select in Lemmy’s settings which languages you chat in. All of these can impact which languages you’re allowed to select in the language dropdown on posts/comments.

Alexandrite wasn’t doing anything with the languages before really, it was just presenting you the full list of languages the server knows (“all languages”) and letting you freely pick (defaulting to “English”), even if they weren’t valid. Now it should be respecting all the rest of the restrictions/settings I mentioned above.

@freamon is exactly right, looking at your posts you were posting in !news, with the new Alexandrite update I’m only seeing an “Undetermined” as an option. If you were trying to post in English before (which is generally the default Alexandrite attempts to use) that would probably result in this error.

You got it! The Unspecified/English thing is exactly the problem. I just saw this post but coincidentally I just fixed this yesterday (a few hours after the post).

As of yesterday it should now do this!

I kind of already did this, you could click the “Lemmy.world” in the header in the top left and it’d refresh the feed, BUT only if your page URL would change. If you were already on https://alexandrite.app/lemmy.world and clicked the header, because that’s the same URL clicking the header would go to it just wouldn’t do anything. However if you had changed some sorts so you were on https://alexandrite.app/lemmy.world?type=Posts&listing=Local&sort=Hot or something, clicking the header text would refresh the feed.

Now it’ll just always refresh the feed, though it’s a little slower because it’s reloading extra data it doesn’t need to, but I’ll probably optimize it a bit sometime in the future.

I never had considered before a few days ago that someone would host Alexandrite alongside their instance so it never occurred to me that someone might first interact with Lemmy through Alexandrite. I will definitely add registration!

(I’m the dev of Alexandrite) Officially there isn’t yet a way to self-host it without modifying the code (unless you host it on one of a few specific cloud providers like the official Alexandrite site does), but now that people are self hosting anyway I think adding support for it is going to be higher up on my priority list!

Alexandrite has a typo in the name! (I’m the creator btw)
