TheButtonJustSpins , to selfhosted in Do you use all your self hosted services? Are there any you found to be not worth it after installing?

If something interests you, set it up. If you find you don’t need it, take it down.

HReflex ,

That’s pretty much exactly what I have done. I’ve hosted Plex, and Matrix in the past. Plex I will host in the future but Matrix was too much for me to host on my own, but the experience of setting it up myself was definitely worth it.

TheButtonJustSpins ,

I recommend checking out Jellyfin instead of Plex. Open source, fully self hosted.

@Akhuyan, I just wanted to let you know that you’re doing a great job.

Thank you for saying that!

This isn’t even the scene from that quote but I still couldn’t resist making it my profile pic!

flint5436 ,

Yeah but it fits the quote better i think. Definitely suits your profile name ;)

temporary_pizzas , to nostupidquestions in Is it normal to start reading a book but then suddenly realize that you have no idea what's going on in the plot because you have been reading the words but ignoring their meaning?

Happens way too often to me too… And then, I’ll start reading all over, only to realize I’ve done the same thing again…

Manufacturing failure modes is perhaps a weird fascination of mine. How does the industry fail for 1/1000 products sometimes…

defaultnamespace OP ,
@defaultnamespace@lemmy.world avatar

Me too! I try to take a picture of some of the better ones I run into. Some that come to mind are a fully sealed individual size bag of chips that only had air in it, and an individually wrapped protein cookie that had two cookies jammed in it. Life evens out.

Tandrios , to technology in Redditors, how do you like Lemmy?

What perhaps will be the final nail in the coffin for Reddit is working here perfectly! Mobile apps! Jerboa is perhaps lacking some features, but works like a charm.

Akasiek , to piracy in Is there a safe way to do stuff without a vpn?
@Akasiek@lemmy.ml avatar

VPNs don’t make things safer. You need to use reliable trackers like 1337x. VPNs can hide your traffic from your ISP. If you’re living in some smaller country you might get await with seeding without VPN and without getting notified by your ISP.

zxo , to android in Why do you personally prefer using an Android phone?

For me it’s probably the ability to sideload apps, among other things. Apps like NewPipe which would never make it to the Play Store are apps that I use every day, because they are just good apps. Also, I just like the UX of my Pixel compared to an iPhone - I couldn’t live without things like a back button, and I sort of don’t like the iOS UI.

rimmytea , to android in What phone are you using?

Pixel 7 Pro w/GrapheneOS. Being able to control what my phone is sending or not sending + the battery life gain from everything not phoning home is amazing.

camr_on , to selfhosted in Do you use anything to organise info about your services?
@camr_on@lemmy.world avatar

I keep a wiki using obsidian.md. The hard work is in working up the motivation to keep it updated. API keys and such I like to keep in Bitwarden/Vaultwarden

shertson , to selfhosted in Do you use anything to organise info about your services?
@shertson@lemmy.world avatar

As others have mentioned, there are two things required. A space to document information, and a separate secure space for password/secretes.

Personally I use Joplin and BitWarden. I used to use DokuWIki and KeepassXC.

Don’t forget to edit all your comments first to say [removed] or [moving to lemmy.world]

Otherwise all your old comments stay on the site but with the username of [deleted]. Posts too.

If you need a tool to do this for you automatically, I think I’ve heard of people using Shreddit. But there are likely a few options.

flint5436 OP ,

Oh yeah, good idea! Before this strike I only heard of Mastodon. Didn’t like it because it was so twitter-esque. I wasn’t even aware that there are other federated networks which are similar to reddit… If all of my posts and comments said something like “user moved to lemmy.world” I’d spread the word that there are alternatives.

goblingreen , to reddit in Confession. I wrote a lot of fake stories on Reddit.

Don’t worry about it. I always assume reddit stories are fake anyway.
